Take Vietnam. The SOP in Vietnam for perimeter defense was verbally challenge the intruder 3 times and fire 2 warning rounds before shooting to kill. In practice we executed the SOP in reverse order.

Now! Gigging 70 airmen for the SOP violation is SOP. Burn everyone remotely connected with the incident. In reality, a sergeant in charge of the munitions armory said "FUCK IT, THEYRE FLYING ON THE MISSLE, I AINT GOT TIME FOR THE PAPERWORK BS." Then the loaders sold the idea to the aircraft crew-chief, who got a verbal okay from the aircraft weapons officer. Three people made the decision, not 70.

I'm trying to figure out where in hell they'd store several warheads inside a B52. So likely someone else said FUCK YOU! YOURE NOT GETTING A GODDAMNED SPECIAL PLANE JUST FOR SOME WARHEADS.

Do you have some proof youre not an airhead, etc?

According to The B52 Stratofortress Association the B52 can carry a dozen ACMs, twenty ALCMs or 8 nuclear bombs.

Well, to help you know what you know. These was not as you stated in earlier posts some uranium hardened bunker busters kept on-hand to load.

"The AGM-129A advanced cruise missile is a stealth, nuclear-capable cruise missile used exclusively by B-52H bombers, specifically designed to carry a W80-1 nuclear warhead with a yield of 5 to 150 kilotons."

The "packages" are kept in specifically designed storage facilities to protect from the elements and only taken out for testing, even practice loading of the weapons was halted in 1991. Perhaps if you read some of these information the next time you say "pork the experts" you may at least know something about what you are talking about. Here you go:

As a gesture to Russia and the Strategic Arms Reduction Treaty, the first Bush administration took it one step farther in 1991 by ordering all bombers to halt nuclear ground alerts, which allowed bomber crews to practice loading a nuclear warhead, but never taking off with one.

The Defense Department does transport nuclear warheads by air, but instead of bombers it uses C-17 or C-130 cargo aircraft.

Nuclear weapon experts said they were shocked to find out how completely command and control over the six nuclear warheads failed to allow such a mistake to occur.

Hans Kristensen, director of the Nuclear Information Project at the Federation of American Scientists, said a host of security checks and warning signs must have been passed over, or completely ignored, for the warheads to have been unknowingly loaded onto the B-52.

ACMs are specifically designed to carry a W80-1 nuclear warhead with a yield of 5 to 150 kilotons and delivered by B-52 strategic bombers.

“It’s not like they had nuclear ACMs and conventional ACMs right next to each other and they just happened to load one with a nuclear warhead,” Kristensen said.

The Defense Department uses a computerized tracking program to keep tabs on each one of its nuclear warheads, he said. For the six warheads to make it onto the B-52, each one would have had to be signed out of its storage bunker and transported to the bomber. Diligent safety protocols would then have had to been ignored to load the warheads onto the plane, Kristensen said.

The main risk would have been the way the Air Force responded to any problems with the flight because they would have handled it much differently if they would have known nuclear warheads were onboard,” Fetter said.

Absent any specific knowledge of these particular weapons and warhead procedures, (and not having any reason to google them to begin with), the irony, of course, that I assumed, as I suspect you and most everyone here would have, is that they routinely fly with armed nuclear weapons. So there you go.....

I admit to being mystified when I first saw the headline.... shit... I had no idea they did not do it routinely so I kept thinking I was missing something about the story. I am glad they don't.... just surprised.

It is curious to me that the SOD fell on his sword publicly about this... must have assumed it would "leak" out.....

I am glad they are tightening up the ship... and I am surprised, on some level, that things were apparently that lax, but perhaps that is just a result of overall fatigue on the part of our military.... they have been stretched thin for a long time..... As it did back in the day, this shit takes it's toll. Maybe they are all just smoking dope again like we did, brother.

I appreciate anyone who has ever served in the military, god bless and thank you, but since the vietnam conflict there have been some drastic changes.

Near the end of the cold war it was clear that trying to get a bunch of bombers out of a base, when that base would be the first target, was not ideal.

Nuc boats were becoming much more technologically advanced, and with the stealth technology specifically they became our fist line of defense, primarily as a deterent. They were hard to detect and locate in the first place, almost impossible. They could evade and retaliate with impunity.

So with the cold war out the US government had no qualms at the SALT meetings downgrading the nuclear air bombers. The B-52 was the aging worn-out dog even with multiple upgrades, useless against enemy attack aircraft able to take them out, and that was back then.

They are still here, as a deterent. The warheads could be loaded, that is the deterent capability.

For much more than a decade, it has been realized, and becomes much more apparent with changing international events, that nuc boats are our major deterrent ......... at least, if we don't start losing a few.
