Would only work if he lies about it under oath and W has proven himself adept at not ending up in a situation wehre he is under oath.

Yup. "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice... won't get fooled again!" Despite the fractured syntax, he's at least smart enough not to get caught with his pants down. Plus, Laura strikes me as the 'dirty Librarian' sort. I mean, she met him in his 'bad boy' days, and he seems to need a sort of mother/whore figure in his life. Witness Condi's Dom-boots, Harriet Miers' sycophancy, and Karen Hughes' bull-dyke-but-old-fashioned-housewife mein. ;)

Stepping back, you do have to admite W's handlers. They have done an outstanding job of keeping him from screwing up, when his natural propensity seems to lean towards ineptitude at best. If they could just keep him from goin goff script, they would get an A plus. AS is, they desrve at least an A, considering what they have wroght and what they had to work with.

No argument here. I think they had the first experience with Reagan, who was a much better spokesperson, and had a much broader appeal. At his worst, he was sort of a doddering uncle, while at Bush's worst, he's a spoiled preppy fratboy. As you say, what they have been able to accomplish with what they have to work with is nothing short of breathtaking.

Having said that, I think that the Libertarian wing of the Conservative movement is rapidly losing interest, between the increasing federal debt and the exposure of intrusive domestic spying.

The Religiuos Right is being splintered by the lack of real legislative progress on their agenda, and the anti-immigrant policiies that hit the core of the Catholic church. Is the anti-abortion movement large enough to overshadow the immigration-friendly attitude of local parishes?

We live in interesting times.

I'm willing to bet if they push that immigartion crap thrugh, they're going to find themselves back in the position as loyal opposition real quick.

I have the feling most republicans have their nuts in a vice over it. The money says chap labor, bvote for it, thei consitutents say, what abou tus? They'll go with the money of course, but some of them, particularly those from the southe east and south west will probably pay for it with their seats. Which all in all is probably not to oterible an outcome.
