What really sucked is that after Deb "broke" the story on Dillinger's supposed fraud, there seemed to be a rash of voting 1 on his stuff. Now he only has emailed feedback to rely on, he doesn't really know how people really feel, vote wise, about his stuff. That really sucks.

The fraud was committed. The supposition is that Dillinger did it. Guilty until proven innocent here? What country do you come from? Over here, we pretend that you're innocent until we lock your happy ass up in jail with tv, exercise, and your very own tutor in the arts of homosexual loooove.

Someone was doing. Someone knocked it off. Enough said. Like Laurel stated somwhere, when the Membership voting results go online, those votes will bear more weight. One vote per member. Unless the evildoer (oh gawd that's hokey) registers a hundred names (how many email addy's do you think s/he can run up and keep track of?), then you're going to see less incidence of fraud.

Killer Muffin, what burden of proof, "a preponderance of the evidence" or "beyond a reasonable doubt" would you like to use? I would guess the probability is about 99% it was him. Of course you have the other 1% where it could have been some fanatical starstruck worshipping groupie who just dies for his stories.

Make that 99.9% probability. His nauseating self-promotion of his stories make it even more likely.

All the evidence we have is entirely circumstantial. He probably did it because he is self-promoting. He probably did it because they are his stories. He probably did it because he tends to go on and on ad naseaum about his stuff and it irritates posters. He probably did it because he didn't have a date last friday night. It's circumstantial. You can't have a preponderance of circumstantial evidence. Until you can prove that he was the one doing it with factual evidence, like matching IPs for the duration, well, you have no proof, only supposition. Yes, it would be possible to do the IP thing with a conjuctive effort between Laurel and his ISP. I don't see it happening in this particular lifetime.

Before you lynch a guy, remember that what you say cannot be unsaid.

I would call the odds more 50/50. In any case, 1) the activity has ceased and 2) the new member vote tabulation thingy is going to be up and running and that will do alot to halting voter fraud.

Anyway, I guess my thing is that naming names isn't important to me. I'm not so concerned with if it's happening NOW. But, certainly it is interesting that it COULD happen and discuss ways to prevent it.

many writers have spent long hours on their work and I think a little fairness and appreciation go along way. What do the writers have to say on this? If you knew your work was voted to be one of the best, with no corruption, would you not be happy and proud?

And WD there are several categories I do not read; rape, gay, and incest. I will not be voting on any of these as I do not read the stories there -- this is just my taste, a little old fashion possibly.

Children...children...children - none of this really matters. It's just a hobby, an elaborate game. It isn't solving world hunger. I am thrilled when I receive emails. I was thrilled when some of my stories were nominated. Ultimately though, I compose erotica to escape the mountains of functional writing I do every day. It's an escape nothing more. It doesn't have to be this angst ridden. It really doesn't.

All this tension does tell us something about human nature though. If there is this much fighting about Literotica Nominations, no wonder a Presidential candidate wouldn't concede defeat. (Waves a big stick in the air)

For what it's worth...

At the risk of being stomped on by whisper or having my math giggled at by WriterDom -

Last night at before I went to bed my latest story had 12 votes and a 4.92 average. The only possible combination was eleven 5s and one 4. Then...this morning, it appeared on the "Top Lists." As I write this I have gotten only ONE other vote. And, my 13th vote is....a 1 (possibly a 2, but I think Larel ALWAYS rounds up). Dropping my average to 4.7.

Dillinger, unless I am much mistaken, lives on the West Coast and wouldn't even be awake at 7:30am EST. So....either an early bird just doesn't like me....or there's more than one person who likes to tinker with top lists. You can blame Dillinger for a little of it, but you can't blame him for every story that falls.

Now...if there is ANYWAY to move on without "naming names" I would very much like to find out if there's anyway to prevent possible ways of "vote tampering" from happening in the future. I'm from FL and that topic appeals to me ;-)

I'm not saying it would prevent the person who tanked me (and hell, who might have disliked my story with good reason) but THAT is what Fred was going for in this thread, I think. Dillinger's story also fell out of the sky when it was #1, as I noticed a few others do. I think there's just a few people out there who can't stand to see anything sit on the top of the hill.

craZy, sure it is a hobby, but why shouldn't the writers care about their work? A hobby being one of the most intense studies. Some of them have spent many hours working on their stories. You might have a small point, but on the other hand look at some of the other threads on in this forum. Is this matter any less important? I don't think anyone would argue with you that world hunger is more important, but remember this is a web site for erotic writing. By keeping the goal of 'erotic writing' in mind: I think it helps the site quality by keeping feedback to the writers as fair and honest as possible. Your reasons for writing are as valid as Madame Pandora's and others, just different. Do not criticize their motivation because it is not the same as yours. If you knew your story won an honest and fair first place, would you not be a little proud? I think so, and much more so than a first place that was won because all the other stories had been voted to a false low level. Cheating in some small way ruins the site. As a reader I would like to prevent that.

Life it too short to worry about such shit.

for the sake of the site will some of the authors post a statement here, supporting the idea that erotic writing is taken seriously at Literotica, and fair voting is useful feedback tool.

Would This Work?

What would happen if the 1 vote was blocked off so that only 4 types of vote were available (but the computer would still calculate scores as though there were still 5 options). The 4 votes would be equivalent to a 2, 3, 4 and 5:

*I wouldn't piss on you if you were on fire (2)
*I'd piss on you but only if you paid me (3)
*Hey, cutie, what's YOUR name? (4)
*Let's fuck! RIGHT NOW! (5)

or something like that. If somebody hated a story enough to award it a 1, they just wouldn't vote - simple as that.

I've probably made a diabolical error in my mathematics (and I guess it could be a bit of a nightmare to implement) but wouldn't that reduce the damage done by rogue vote-terrorists?

The buttons for voting could be left as they are but just remove the html link-code from the 1.That 1 could be a bit like a placebo-vote. An irate voter thinks they're sending a writer hurling way down into the bowels of Hell (where I spend most of my spare time) by clicking 1 but in actual fact they're just unknowingly excercising their right to not vote for a story that they don't like. Does that make any kind of sense, whatsoever?

He is not a "whiny" writer as I have been categorized myself, but something piqued his interest. And, I think it's an issue worth discussing, so I will continue to post on it. Rest assured, I will pencil in time to quake in my boots over cyber threats.

CRaZy - I agree the naming of names gets us nowhere. I provide my own numbers as an example. Accusations aren't a solution because we can't enforce any kind of action about them. I don't even know if Laurel could do that. The internet is a medium just too prone to manipulation. My goal here is preventative, not to enact consequences (to the rack with him...he gave me a 1...). And, I don't think that it's being childish to want to investigate, consider, and possibly improve the integrity of a site. YES, it's just a PORN site, but it's also a GOOD site. It's worth protecting and considering. If I didn't think this place was worth my time, I wouldn't be here. Obviously, you feel the same or you wouldn't be here, either.

For the record, I have a limited interest in my own stories' rankings. I provide mine as an example, and I admit, since this thread started I am more curious about the game of the numbers than I am about how it reflects my story. I obviously thought the story had merit, or I wouldn't have posted it. I don't define my talent or my self-worth by the ranking of one of my stories on this site. Sure, I enjoy seeing it do well. Yes, I enjoy getting feedback. I would like to have as accurate as possible a representation of reader opinion. If anyone doesn't like that, feel free to blow me.

Discussing something - ANYTHING - positive or negative is never a bad thing. If it can't be talked about, then there's a bigger problem than "bitching" or "moaning." Only an idiot sits around and pretends everything is perfect all the time. Sure, I log on...I post to threads, I post my stories, I talk to people, but that also means, I consider the things around me. Anyone else is free to wear blinders. I have NEVER emailed or posted saying "How dare you idiots not post to this thread? This is so important!" Some people just roll with it...some people make suggestions. I don't think this is a problem that infringes upon the ability to enjoy the site. I am not screaming that THE END IS NEAR because of a fucking voting discussion. But, I think there have been a few things WORTH considering. NO ONE is jumping up and down screaming for Laurel to fix this now - investigate this now. This is a thread of "whatifs" and suggestion.
