Hm sudden surge, but welcome to the Kingdom! :D

Thanks I felt bad no-one else had posted here so I thought I'd be a virgin again. :)

Plenty of newbie, true, Charley but also I've found lots of nice people if "you" give them half a chance :)

OK, I somehow, by my own fault, transported, and posted here :D So a time pardoox or me insane... DO NOT answer that! lol :D WRONG forum, but let me see . . . since here .... which does seem a bit facadical, but is not ...

When is a semi-colan necessary?

I really have wondered that, and am serious despite my prior posts : |

Could you translate that into English?

Oh don't take me wrong Charley, my comment had nothing to do with "YOU" in particular. I saw the way you react and are on the AH and I have nothing but respect for you. You are a fine lady and your intervention, at least the ones I've seen, have always been nice to everyone :)

As for your question as to when a semi colon is needed, I'd say the rule says: when two sentences can be linked together and it would feel "weird" to stop them in the middle of one and starting with a new one.

I'm sure some other people will answer you with the "right" definition of the use of a semi colon but that's the way I've always used them and I never had any problems with it.

Or, perhaps when one has been on a liquid diet for several days and a full colon is not required? :D

Charley, I really hope you are not being facetious. If two or more clauses grammatically complete and not joined by a conjunction are to form a single compound sentence, you should us a semi-colon. For example:

Her legs are really long; they go from her ass all the way to the floor.

Based on the 8 out of 11 stories you posted with a hot indicator, I would suspect that you would have known the answer to the question that you posed.

I know that a lot of people, like myself, come to Lit for kicks and giggles, but some really need the help they seek.

Did I tell you that I had a crush on you?

Blacksnake has the right of it. Semicolons are also (less frequently) used to separate items in a series that contains commas:

There were a lot of people in the room: Dr. Ward, my physician; Dr. Matisse, my instructor; Dr. Bloom, my counsellor; and Dr. Brown, my friend.
