You do have a point, tolyk. And a fine point it is... ;)

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

I was trying to think of something witty, memorable, mysterious and intellectual but all I could think of was gauchecritic. Gauche as in left handed (socially) and critic as a hint and sometime semi-anagrammatical version of sarcastic. It also puts personal attackers at something of a disadvantage by being both self-deprecating and pretentious.

What do you think it says about you?

It says I'm cackhanded when communicating and sarcastic.

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

After a long while, yes. For a formal first meeting not a jot.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

My online id is exactly who I would like to be in life, I quite often achieve it by being the biggest fish in a small pond. Other ponds (AH meetings for instance) leave me floundering. (see, inserting imagery and motifs into a short answer, I need thinking time)

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

I don't think I've ever been called anything other than gauche (except being called g, which I think is cool)

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

The gauche without the critic is probably more descriptive, so yes and no.

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

I miss Gauchie, which is what Maths used to call you. I like using Gaucho at times. Then there's ______ ;) .

B, um, Perdita :)

I thought it was about time I got something down on this, so here goes.

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

Alex de Kok came when I was looking for a gender-neutral name, to use with my first attempt at writing first-person female. I got the 'Alex' pretty quickly, the 'de Kok' came as a flash of inspiration (!) - I tell people to say it out loud in an approximation of a South African accent with a long 'lex', and the 'de' pronounced 'dee' rather than 'duh'.

What do you think it says about you?

I haven't a clue. Others have been far more creative in their choices.

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

Impossible to say. I think I would answer automatically if someone called me Alex, so maybe it is me.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

Up to a point, yes, because regardless of name it's me. I'm probably franker online than I am in real life, but I still try to be polite. I put the assholes on 'ignore'.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

To what? I don't think I've been called anything other than Alex (or AdK). It's not my name, doesn't bother me.

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

Irrelevant.

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

No idea. How about Balvenie Caol Ila Bunnahabhain?

Alex

LOL

Alex, that was rather informative.
As a matter of fact I was always wondering if you were using your real name and were of Dutch descent.

I never even thought to say it out loud to get the English meaning. To me it's a normal name, a bit dull even.

 :D

In reading all the explanations, it seems most of us are a bit more than in real life. More open, more flirty, more sarcastic, more ...

:D

Just a few general comments and questions on the use of nicknames/handles/identities/whatever-the-hell-you-wanna-call-them.

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

///I always thought it would make a cute little 'title' for a personal ad. (Now I wish it didn't sound like a personal add, but oh well.)

I picked "Amy Sweet" because I thought Amy sounded like a sweet name, sweet sounded like it could be a last name, and I wanted a pen name that sounded like a "real name", should I ever decide to publish outside of Lit. So I checked lit to see if it was taken and stort of staked my claim on it by starting an alt with that name.///

What do you think it says about you?

I think that it describes me pretty well.:D But it seems to say, "I came to play/ don't take me seriously" I don't care for that too much- but then around here I get taken *too* seriously sometimes, lol:D////

vella is a character in the Gor series done by Snorin Norman...eeeps.. i mean John Norman. the first three of the 25 book series were good but after that i feel into a coma.
