Nicks

I have explained oggbashan before but for those who missed it:

How?
It is an ancient nickname I had at boarding school that no one would now remember. It happened because my school number was 099 and it was impressed on me as a newbie that my number was an important part of my school identity.

My parents were abroad and mail was infrequent. I felt deprived compared to my classmates who were getting post two or three times a week so I decided to send off for a free weekly course on the Roman Catholic faith that would be despatched in plain brown envelopes.

When I filled in the coupon to order the course I included my school number. The publishers hyphenated the 099 to my surname producing [surname]-ogg. My writing on a tiny coupon wasn't clear.

Each week I would receive an envelope addressed to [surname]-ogg. The mail was distributed by my house master who was also Head of Classics at the school. He thought it amusing to refer to me as 'Og, Rex Basiliensis' - Og, King of Bashan from the Old Testament. So I became Og Bashan which because the name was actually shown as ogg was written oggbashan.

When I wanted a name for Lit I used that old nickname that I didn't need any more.

What does it say about me?
That I am antique with a long memory.

A good reflection?
Now probably yes. The resident bore who has been around for ever.

Do I see oggbashan as myself?
Not really. It is part of me but nowhere near the whole. Even at the Yorkshire meet I was there as Og, not as me.

Shortened?
Easy. Og, Ogg, Oggie - I answer to all of them.

If I were to choose a different nickname?
I have: Jeanne D'Artois and Fag-Ash Lil. jeanne_d_artois' story unatit explains Fag-Ash Lil. Jeanne herself was because there are too many jeanne d'arc or joan of arc. jeanne_d_artois was a very interesting and wicked 14th century lady of royal descent whose evil was never proven because the evidence and/or witnesses disappeared. She was said to be a witch. If she was, she was good at it.

I also answer to King Henry VIII.

Og

By my reckoning, that makes Fag-Ash Lil third-order fictional. You're hurtling down that recursive corridor of mirrors towards the minds I.

I agree. Og is a fiction who created jeanne who created Fag-Ash Lil.

Or - Fag-Ash is more real than Og. She is based on a real person in my town who is actually called Fag-Ash Lil if not to her face. Anyone daring to take such a liberty would suffer a torrent of expletives if not physical attack (unless holding out a packet of cigarettes to ward off Fag-Ash).

How did you get yours/come up with yours?
Thought about what I was comfortable with, that sort of reflected who I was

What do you think it says about you?
That I'm silly at times.

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?
Yuppers... I'm definitely silly at times.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?
yes

Do you like it when people shorten your name?
So far I've been called, Silly... Lady and SL... all fine by me

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?
Doesn't bother me in the least.

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?
Have no clue... will have to think about that... probably something with curiousity in it... I'm always curious about things.

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

“The Fool” was a chat handle I used when I used to chat. Once again, with the inability to use spaces it became “The_Fool.” The Fool was actually a shortened form for Prince of Fools, which I used in a more turgid soliloquy somewhere in my more distant past. By Prince of Fools, I referred to myself as a fool among fools, greater (or lesser) for my foolishness. In that context, fool for love, fool for women, fool for living life to great abandon. Fool is also a form for Jester and I do see my self as a less than serious character on Lit. Not that I don’t have my serious moments, but those are quickly swept away with some form of lunacy.

What do you think it says about you?

I don’t take anything too seriously, including myself.

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

In a way. There is more than meets the eye to The Fool.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

Somewhat. However the real life me is way too serious.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

About the only shortened form I’ve seen is “Fool.”

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

Damn Straight. Gotta make it Foooooooool. Or Foooooooolish. :D

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

I don’t know, this one captures me so nicely I’d be hard pressed to find another one…except maybe:

Stoooopid

:p

Dranoel is the name of the main character of the dragon stories I write. As his true name is unpronouncable by humans, a wise man bestowed that name on him with the explanation, "It means Wise and Ferocious Defender of Peace."

Seriously? I thought it was Leonard, backwards.

“turgid soliloquy"

I don't know why, but that phrase makes me think of taking a dump. In a nice way, of course.

That was where I originally took the name for the character. There is no Leonard in my name. Nor do I really know anyone named Leonard. As I said it was a sort of inside joke when I started writing the dragon stories, so I reversed the name and became Dranoel Dragon. It seemed to fit.

And I'm guessing you're a fan of sher, sher.

As in Cher? Not so much. :(

Actually she kind of creeps me out.

If I could choose the shortened version of shereads, I'd prefer any one of these
to sher:

sh

she

sherea

sheread

Oh the other hand, how much does it matter? Just talk to me, do me no violence, write dirty stories I can read for free, and call me whatever.

For crying out loud, woman, why didn't you say something earlier?!? :D

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

Quite similar to yours, Loulou. It's a childhood nickname based on my first and middle names.

What do you think it says about you?

That I'm a creature of habit?

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

It is to me because I've always been Minsue. I'm not sure it reflects much of anything to anyone else.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

Horribly shy until I'm comfortable in a situation and then obnoxious as hell? Yup. ;)

Online I'm me, but more so. If that makes any sense. Or if it doesn't, for that matter.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

Sure. I'm Min to many in RL, too.

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

Nope. It matters not.

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

I suppose at this point I'd have to say Gosling, but it's not something I would have chosen since it was all a happy accident that happened well after I registered at Lit.

My brother told me once my nickname should be Cherry since the first thing people say when they see me is, "Hi, Min" <insert bad pun induced groan here>

Lovely thread, Loulou. :) I always enjoy these types of threads, even reading the explanations I already know, but usually have already forgotten. :D

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

It is a translation of my real first name into a fictional language. I have used it since high school. The fictional language is not mine by the way, but one from a series of books.

What do you think it says about you?
Not much actually. But I have had it as a nom de plume for more than 20 years now.

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

hmmm. it could be interpreted as such by some if you knew the original meaning of my RL name. but that side of me is not always evident.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

mostly yes. I am a little less shy and less fearful of rejection here. but I have always been and will always be an irrepressible flirt and I love to make people smile.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

I have become fond of "Bel"

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?
no

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?
I have been Belegon for so long...I think I would draw upon my heritage and find something celtic that I liked.

By the way are you familiar with a movie called 'Memento' ?

The story plays backwards that's why it is sometimes referred to 'Otnemem'. The main character is called 'Leonard' so if you'd be a fan of that, you'D probably choose to spell it backwards....

Just a thought.

In late 1968 or Early 1969, one of my barracks mates said, "Harold, You're Weird." Since Bill Cosby ws popular at the time it soon became Weird Harold. I've found i useful and nurtured it ever since.

What do you think it says about you?

That I'm non-conformist and don't reallycare what others think of me or my opinions.

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

Yes. Sooner or later, everyone who knows me by this nickname, or knows of the nickname, says, "Now I know why they call you Weird."

(The reason for the comment is always something different.)

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

My online identity IS myself whatever name I happen to be using -- whichis 99.999% of the time Weird Harold.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

"Call me anything you want except late for dinner." The only nickname I detest is "Harry."

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?

Nope, I often shorten it to "WH' myself on the rare occasions that I "sign" an e-mail or PM. I used to sign every online post with "Ciao for now -- WH" but have basically given up on signing posts.

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

Where I can't be WH, I try to use Dirty Old Man -- which happens to be the name I post fiction under here at Lit. I've encountered very few places I couldn't use one or the other.

The boring "how did I come up with it" for Lucifer_Carroll was I wanted to do a variation on Lewis Carroll that was a bit darker. Lucifer_Carroll was flawless for that. It would be a good nom-de-plume for my standard fare of oddball stories and darker moody stories.

It says what it says about my writing but it also says a bit about me. The chaotic bits of me that views the world a little like Wonderland. The darker nihilistic quotient that always pops up especially on political and sociological threads. It also sets up the paradox. A man trying to be good, trying to cling to chivalry and romanticism, under the personality and actions of the Prince of Darkness. Add that to the other paradoxes of my real life, scientist chaotician, nihilist romanticist, etc... Plus I just like it. The devil persona is easy to wear and the other is just me who I have had a few years practice being. There's probably more, but like my own multiple personalities in life, the fullness of the alter ego's nature will reveal itself in time.

I guess I just answered that question. Well since my alter ego is half me, Mr. Mortal, yeah. Also, I view its evolution in exactly the same way I do my own affliction with the added bonus that I don't have to keep constant tabs and effort on it so it doesn't wield too great of control over my actions. So yeah, what was the question? Same? yes...mostly.

I don't mind if people shorten my name. Especially since I'm not an insensitive bastard and can understand why people would be hesitant to say anything complimentary to an entity called Lucifer. Overall I've become particularly fond of the short version Luc, because I think Luc the Duc which I pronounce in my mind like Duck but use the definition Duke (I said I was a twisted fuck, right?).

Not really. As I said, I've become fond of Luc and LC is cool too.

Different nickname. Hmm, not sure. Possibly something related to Cerberus which is my most used screen name. I wouldn't use my oldest and most cryptic screen name (it was based on a Magic: The Gathering card in one of my first packs that was tangentally related to one of my passions at the time) because A) The only person who knew that was me is dead and B) I use it as one of my reusable passwords.

How did you get yours/come up with yours?

Well, the sensual went with a name given to me after ' The Colour Purple' came out, Cealy. It's close to my given name but like Tatelou, my brother couldn't say it when he was born so I got Ceal.

What do you think it says about you?

Cealy~ Sealy postopedic mattresses, soft, comforting, solid base, and can last for years before wearing out! lol

Do you think your nickname is a good reflection of who you are?

LOL ya I guess, kinda fun and flirty.

Do you see your online identity in the same way as you see yourself?

Somewhat, more so on here then in real life.

Do you like it when people shorten your name?

Doesn't bother me at all.

Do you wish they wouldn't shorten it?
Like I said , it doesnt bother me, all through my life, no one has called me by my real name , even my dad would list all my brothers and then finally get to my name before giving me heck.

If you could choose a different nickname, what would it be?

Whispersoftly

Yeah, I know, questions, questions. I guess I've just been thinking about my own nickname recently, and I've also noticed people shortening it to different things, namely "Tat", which I don't like.

(I am so sorry Tatelou, Im one of the biggest offenders on that one, I never knew you didnt like it, you should have PMed me and asked me not to use it! I would have stopped, honest I would have! )

It's been a while since I voiced my dislike of this shortening, so I thought: what better way?

My nickname, Tatelou, is just that, and it has been my nickname all my life. It is pronounced Tate (as in the art gallery) Lou (as in loo - toilet).

It's taken from my two actual names: Katie Louise. When I was born, my brother couldn't say my full name, so said "Tatelou" instead. It stuck. My Dad still calls me Tate now.

Anyway, I'll add more answers to my own questions, maybe later.

Lou :rose:

Well that didnt work the way I wanted it to, obviously the questions are Tatelou's , the answers are mine, all mine! lol

I started off here with another nick that I used elsewhere but once I got the hang of things, I wanted something that was more who I wanted to be here. I wanted to be who I am, a pretty outspoken, but solidly good guy, and I hope that's how I come across.

Outspoken? YUP! :p

Solidly good guy? Definitely. :)

Being called "Lewdandlicentious" would soon become a drag for all concerned, so no, I'm happy with "Lew" "Lewd" or even my favourite, "Fucking TWAT!"

Yep, it is a bit of a mouthful :)p). And, being a fellow Twat, I feel privileged to call you your favourite, you Fucking Twat!!!!
