A few major issues need to be resolved between the owners, among those are revenue sharing and reducing the salary cap floor. The two issues are interconnected.
Major market teams, such as the Rangers, have no problem meeting the salary cap floor. However, your small market teams, such as the Lightning, are not easily able to do so. For those teams, even if they make it to the Stanley Cup finals the teams may not turn a profit. So revenue sharing is needed between the major market teams and the small market teams. Which also brings up another issue. What is considered team revenue?
For some teams, they count ticket sales, parking, concessions, and the list goes on and on. Other teams may not count parking or concessions. There either needs to be a standard list or some way of saying all team revenue both directly and indirectly.
This lockout does not bode well for the sport. They MUST realize the fans aren't going to take it and the lockout will do far greater harm than good.
Yes, league revenues are up but one must wonder how much is due to expansion teams and other items.
The owners have to resolve their differences. Otherwise you can't cry poverty when you continue to sign players to ever expanding deals which is another sure fire way to piss off your fans.
