I got my first job at 14yrs old. Ihave worked my ass off at every job I have had after that. Is it my perception, or is the next generation just not motovated/ self-diciplined enough to act in the same manner? Is there no want to acheive anymore?

This one is very hard to answer. I think that they are motivated, but only after they get the life experience that they need. That doesn't come as early as it did with my generation. But then what do I know? I was working full time, going to school, and raising 6 kids (on of which was me) at 13.

I wonder if every older generation extant at any given moment in time held the view that the younger generation was in some serious manner flawed compared to itself.

I for one do not think kids need to be working at 14. Too many already are and for all the wrong reasons.

Golden Goddess, I think that you hit the nail on the head. It is what is instilled in the child in the early years. I don't ever remember not having a chore or chores to do. I might have even mumbled about them a time or two.

The point is that they have to learn a work ethic, just like everything else. If the parents don't teach it to them, they sure aren't going to learn it in school.
