Newbie Support Forum

Here's a really important forum newbie question (really, it is!): Is there a list of available smileys somewhere, or do we have to import our own? Come to that, how do we import our own?

There should be a list of available smileys next to the place you enter your post in.

Unless there's some way to hide it I'm not aware of.

You can link your own smileys. I believe it's through use of the IMAGE link. Never done it myself though.

Yup, what he said. But, you can only link to smileys on the net. Like this: http://www.addis-welt.de/smilie/smilie/xmas/xmas6.gif

Hi Jasmine,

Welcome to the AH = Authors Hangout.
If you want to discuss stories and such you can go here:

Story Feedback

or here:

Story Discussion Circle

Anyway, have fun and don't let the bully boys scare you away.

:D

I see "post icons" under the message field, but no smilies. I must have something turned off somewhere...any idea where I go to turn it back on?

If you click on the button down left which says Post Reply you get a message window.
On the right side of this window you see a box with smilies.

If not, look at the Additional Options below the message window.
Check Miscellaneous Options.
Perhaps you have disabled smilies in text.
That should help.

I hope.

no I don't. But I'll stop hijacking this thread and go find a tech help section.

Nevermind! Found it! Had something clicked in my control panel that shouldn'ta been

Thanks for the help.

How long does it usually take submissions to complete the approval/refusal process?

That is THE QUESTION that used to be answered by MathGirl.

However, I will attempt to reply:

The official answer is several days, but longer if there is a themed competition running and the submission is not an entry to the competition.

The real answer is always much longer than the author thinks reasonable, plus a day.

The proper answer is it depends on the direction of the wind over Hawaii, the price of shares in an obscure Australian mining company, and whether the sheep are standing still or running across the field yelling 'Baa!'.

You forgot the garderobes, Og.

;)

No, I didn't. I have a team of peasants cleaning them out now. The manure will be dug into the potato field. My steward grows very good King Edwards.

Is there a way to make replies that don't have the entire previous message quoted above it? I could try it, but I think my JAWS form's mode that lets me know where the edit fields are and ensure that I'm typing inside of them, will likely shut of while I'm trying to retrace over the text of the previous person's message to let them know what in their post I'm answering or asking about! This makes me loose my place and forces me to start all over again by back butttoning. and then re-clicking on the reply with quote again. Quesla:

There's two ways to post your own without including other's text.

I'm not sure if this will be much help.

First there's a 'Quick Reply' button at the bottom of each post. I'm not sure how JAWS reports this button as it has no text in it.

If you press this button it will take you to a field where you can type in what you want. When finished there's a 'Post Quick Reply' button underneath this field.

The second way is to press one of the 'Post Reply' buttons near the top and bottom of each page. When entering your text there you press the 'Submit Reply' button.

The difference between the two choices is that the Quick Reply is on the same page as the posts you are read. Post Reply takes you to a new page. The Quick Reply has a limited number of formatting options, the Post reply has many more.

I hope that helps.

I have a super-important newbie question. Is it ok to participate in all the goofy games just to beef up my post count as long as I'm actually participating? I don't want to be a virgin anymore! *sobs*

Participate away. Word games are a fast way. Join a playground group is even faster. Losing your virginity around here is fast and painless. ;) :D

Welcome to the AH madhouse by the way.

Hi Rahgraham? Sorry, I think my JAWS has murdered your call name!? So far so good! I just have to go through this and send tio see" if it goes through? If it does, That's what I'll stick with. At least it's letting me use the edit fields, which is a good sign!

Hi WinterJasmine? Quesla here. I'm a Female sci-Fi writer of adult Sci-Fi/Fantasy mostly done ifrom the male character's point of view, although I have no idea why I tend to do this and in third person too. I sometimes try to do a little of the Heroine's point of view also in Third Person. I don't think my punctuation is all university level perfect, but I can most certainly point out any confusions in point of view and event sequences and a few simple gramar logistics. I use Spellcheck too, through my JAWS blind speech text screen reader program, but there are some technical rearrangements that Spellcheck will try to do to some sentence arrangements that just don't work and still make sense, I think this is because spell check is programed to use very rulled language and grammar and it can't be bent to configure some of our sci-fi language and language useage??? It is frustrating and I wonder if someone like Daniaiellkitten might have more educational background with her university studies in language and writting to know why our sentence configurations don't work??? I'm pretty sure that you'll need Someone with a degree in grammar and syntax and such otherwise! I'd otherwise LOVE! to help. Quesla -after having dug myself out of the snow from my Ice house!

Preview function & Thread tools links?

I've been writing erotica for myself for ages and decided to take the plunge and submit my stories here. I'm not the most confident person in the world even though I go to a writing class and whatever I read out (non erotic) gets good comments.
I mainly write erotica for myself so don't want to completely change my plots but am open to suggestions, also I run all my stories through spellcheck.
I was wondering if anyone could suggest an editor, I have gone through the list but not sure who to choose. I basically just want someone to read through one or two of my stories and reassure me that they're not total cr*p! They are monstly n/c reluctance but leading to romance. (main female in dangerous situation, main male seems like villain at first but it all turns out good, you know the sort of stuff).
I'm female and would be more comfortable with a female editor.
Thanks,
Jasmine
Hi Black Tulip? Can you explain how to use the preview function in numbered steps for the stupid, (me) I'm hoping it's just me and not my JAWS software that is making it so that I cannot use the preview function as I thought it was meant to be used? -for correcting any type-o mistakes in the message body as I've originally typed it? before submitting? Other thing? What is the Thread Tool's link? Quesl still learning! Love & Light! Quesla

Hi Quesla,

Click the reply button or the quote button.
Whichever you want.

A new window opens for you to type your message.

Below the window you can find a box with post icons.
Are you able to see that, or not at all?

Below that there are two buttons: Submit reply and Preview post.

Use Preview post to see how your message will look.
If something is not right:
scroll down to the window where you have typed your message.
You can change whatever you want.

If you want to change something after you posted, click the button below your post that says Edit.

Hope this helps.
