Yes and no. I've seen in my own experience where the ratings can go up or down when the sweeps come through. Sometimes, it seems that 5's are just as likely to be erased as 1's. Also, the most critical time for the ratings is when the stories are most vulnerable, the first week on the new list. If you don't get the magic H during that time frame, the story often seems to have fewer views and it takes much longer for a work to be posted on the most read categories. Since we don't know when the sweeps happen, the trolls really have a lot of influence over what gets noticed and what doesn't.

I'm actually trying an experiment right now to assess how category placement effects the overall score of a story. I think the number of views, and possibly the rating, is really based on the category posted in. I have a series and as I post each chapter, I'm putting it into the appropriate category. Right now, all of the categories are in the darker realm so I've posted in non consent/reluctance and BDSM. The next chapter will be in the incest category. If I'm right, that post will out distance the previous two and the scores will be higher even though it's a less steamy chapter. But, the difficulty is that trolls have kept the scores on the first two chapters relatively low, so without knowing when the sweeps will occur, they lose the prime opportunity for advancement. I hope that made sense.

I agree that incest generally gets the most views and votes however you mentioned series so if this is a chapter 5 or 6 and the incest fans do not remember seeing 1-5 or whatever they may not pick up on it. Also if you are this into trying to "figure" out the votes/views (I have some number ocd myself so know how it feels) take into consideration that the higher the chapter number the less of each you will generally get. The first 10 chapters of my series got 80 up as high as 250 votes. I am on 28 and get 40-50 and have been told that that's actually decent for that many chapters. I think the pattern you will find is that there is no pattern.

An enlightening browse

Thank you for bumping this thread up. I did not read the entirety, but enough to answer several questions. This will help as I go forward with more story ideas.

Hi, Slut, (I hope you don't mind being called that) and welcome to the Authors' Hangout. This is a nice place to hang out and to ask for help or information. :)

And, I agree having this thread is a good idea to provide advice and info for new authors. :D
