TxRad or Cloudy, I like the firefox but tell me what I'm doin wrong, mine is not faster, its slower. Pages take time to load, and sometimes it says "operation timed out", its not like dial-up slow or anything but do I need to tweak something or get updates or somethin?

Oh, have a banana. :nana:

I'm not sure, Lisa. Mine's done that maybe three or four times the entire time I've used it.

Maybe look on their tech support page, and see if it's addressed there?

Sorry I couldn't be of more help. :rose:

Newbies want to know

Hi folks. First day here and mucho confused. Talk about virgin! The stories are great, so I plunge into the underbrush.

1) How to choose a category. The (first) story I'm working on could go into romance (though it's more about lust than love), or Mature (the characters have been together for along time .... 2 Decembers with no May), or Erotic Couplings (see previous ... they have known one another for a looong time and most of the stories I've read there seem to have a good dollop of serendipity to them), Nonconsent (but he doesn't do anything she doesn't quickly like), or exhibitionism (though it's not clear that any non-participants are ever actually involved).

My guess is that I'm probably over-complicating the issue -- when you have multiple categories possible, how to decide?

2) Do I have the sequence right?
A) submit
B) pending
C) rejected/revise, or accepted
D) After accepted, goes to "New" story category
E) Stays there for remainder of month
F) Moves to Category placement
G) Receives adulation, lavish gifts, etc.

3) I gather this is a constant dilemma: any suggestions on how to get an editor who will analyze the story as well as correct mechanics?

What I've done is check the listings of 20 or 25 editors who sound like they would be interesting to work with, then read a story by each of them. But our planets don't seem to be aligning all that well.... I hope to find someone with more experience than me at writing erotica. I've been writing for so many years that there are a lot of the basics I'm probably okay with, but erotica is an entirely new writing area for me. (Cf: virgin).

4) Speaking of virgin: how many times do I get to "do it," and still be a "virgin" on the boards? Ain't technology grand!

5) Finally, a truly newbie question: where are the smilies on the reply board? I can see the Icon box for the entire message but see nothing about the smilies frequenting here.

Sigh. TIA. Softie.

Which category do you see it in? Submit it in that category. If Laurel disagrees, she'll place it where she thinks it fits. I've never had one moved, but she's an old hand at this, and if, for some reason, you don't agree with her choice, you can always PM her and ask why it was placed where it was.

Mostly, yes. They only stay "new" for a week, I believe. And, "new" isn't a category. It will be in whatever category right from the beginning, but will be on the "new" list for a week.

Gifts? :D

The best suggestion I can give you is to hang around awhile, get to know people here. Once you do, you usually can find someone here to give your story a once over for you. Either that, or ask on the Editor's Forum.

4) Speaking of virgin: how many times do I get to "do it," and still be a "virgin" on the boards? Ain't technology grand!

After 30 posts you become "experienced." After that you move to "really experienced," "really really experienced," and at 500 posts you become a "Literotica Guru." At 1000 posts you can choose your own title, like mine above: Retarded Cannibal.

5) Finally, a truly newbie question: where are the smilies on the reply board? I can see the Icon box for the entire message but see nothing about the smilies frequenting here.

When the window opens to post a reply, the emoticons are in the little box immediately to the right of the box where you type your reply. You didn't see them?

Welcome to the hangout, btw. :rose:

Thank you so much for the prompt reply! Wow ... much appreciated.

So: I guess the first story will go in w/o an editor, cuz I'm anxious. Oh well.

Umm, that was what I was expecting. And as I'm typing this, there ain't nothing but blank space to the right. I wonder if I could have disabled something in setting options.

Thanks for the help. I'm off to the editor's forum.

Uh, you can only ask a bizillion questions per post, you went over 1.

Category, choose what you think is best, Administration will change it if they think they need to.

The sequence is submit, wait a few days or a week, posted, put a link in your sig line and ask people to take a look, then (Receives adulation, lavish gifts, etc.)

Editors, I dunno, sounds like you have it covered.

You lose your virgin status after 30 or 35 posts I think, and become experienced. So post, post, post.

Finally, when you are writing a reply the smilies are right there beside the box, just click one.

oh, have a banana. :nana:

EDITED: And never listen to me when Cloudy or Black Tulip is around, cause they know this stuff.  Cloudy.

Ummmm, nope. Nuthin' there. Nuthin' but blue space. Guess I'm just special. (I'd put a smilie here, but .... you know.)

Love to share a banana w/you, Ms. Denton, but not only have I lost my smilies, I'm also lo-carb. What a shame!

Thanks again .... never expected such fast replies. Nice to have the confusion sorted a bit.

Softie. Going away now.

Ownership questions for/from a genuine newbie

A friend sent me here to post my stories. I am looking for the copyright information area.

If you good people publish my works, have I lost my rights to it?
I have been writing for years, and have never shared anything in a public sort of way. If there is a place on literotica.com that has the legal mumbo jumbo that I could look at, it would make me feel better about sharing my writings on your site.

Any advice or information is appreciated.

Ty

You still retain the copyright, even if it's posted here, and Laurel guards them very diligently. She'll definitely go to bat for you if it's stolen. All you have to do is PM (not email) her the info about where you found it, etc., she'll completely take care of it for you.

Smilies

Hi Softy,

I think I found the way to find your missing smilies. :nana:

Go to the top of the page.
Click User CP.
Once there you see a Control Panel to the left.
Click on Edit Options in the top box.
Scroll to the bottom to find Miscellaneous Options.
Look for the Message Editor Interface.
Make sure you have the extra options on.
I think that should do it.

Good luck.

:D

Oh, and by all means have fun here. Welcome too.

The two things at once may be right, since I usually have 2 or 3 windows open at once on two monitors. That is how I do it, I went to look at the homepage like Cloudy suggested, it was on that when I started but I like my regular home page and changed it. I didn't see no updates or nothing, it better get faster cause I ordered a couple T-shirts.

Have a frog and a banana. :p :nana:

There hasn't been any updates as of yet and buying the shirts will help future releases... all this is done by volunteers for free...

On another note.... I have held off running my Spybot and Adaware since i started using Firefox.... it's been a couple of weeks now and I ran them today...

NO Problems were found.... Damn, that sounds good...... :D

I'll raise ya.... :rose: :rose: and a ;)

LOL

I am actually running Adaware right now, the see how clean the system stays after installing Firefox.

:D

I saw this on one of the mozilla pages:

Status Update :: 2/3/2005

The Mozilla Update service (a.k.a UMO) has been frozen for close to a month now for various reasons. We would like to take this opportunity to bring folks up to speed on where it is going and when it will get there.

Just a few weeks ago, the lead developer stepped down and so the Mozilla Foundation has taken the chance to re-evaluate the project and look at how to best move it forward. Looking over the existing v1.0 codebase, the remaining developers felt there were security concerns and scalability issues with the site that needed to be addressed. At this time, the site and CVS for updates to the UMO codebase are frozen.

Maybe with some bananas they can hurry up. :nana: :nana: :nana: :nana: :nana: :nana: :nana: :nana:

I had the wrong one!!!!

Somebody on another site told me I only had the 1.0, she tried to send me the better one but my mail blocked it. Then I found it on the Mozilla site, this one is like 1.7.5 or somethin. I'm gonna go un-install the one I have and install this one, I downloaded it. I didn't know there was different ones.

Thanks to everybody sayin it was real good, thats why I kept looking, I am off to try it, have a banana.

Hi Eff,

Technical question. I'm on XP now, can I get rid of the IE without overhauling everything?

Follow TxRad's advice, since I don't have any. One reason that I junked Win2k was that it simply wouldn't let me remove IE - as soon as I did, it put it back! It was after that I migrated to Linux - and I've only seen XP once. That means I don't have the experience to give sound advice on this issue.

The bottom line is that the mal-ware (viruses, etc., etc., etc.) writers target 'Doze because that's the most common option. Lots of the crap depends upon defaults in IE, Outlook Express and so on. If you use something different (so don't have a useful IE history, Outlook address-book, etc.) a lot of it simply doesn't work.

However, as TR points out, there are a number of security sensitive sites (like banks) that rely on M$ 'tweaks' (read as ' subversions of the standards') to do their security vetting. The better ones have started to rely on standards instead, but not all. If you use Internet Banking (etc.) and your bank is one of the, er, 'less enlightened' ones, then you either have to stick with IE for this purpose (despite its issues), or give up Internet Banking (etc.).

"Safe Surfing" (like "Safe Sex") does have its drawbacks.

Even so, the less you use the M$ freebies, the safer you are.

"Open Source" isn't free from problems, it's just that the problems are human, not bank-balance-based, so it's easier to work around the problems.

With proprietory/commercial software, you're at the mercy of someone (or a team) who is trying to maximise profit. With OS software, you're at the mercy of someone (or a team) who is doing it for the fun of the work. In the second case, at least you know that the someone isn't setting out to screw you from step 1! They ain't perfect, but they are 'on your side'. There is the caveat: "if they can be arsed", but even if they can't, the code is in the open, so someone else might be.

It still isn't 'a free lunch', but at least they ain't the Borgias: it might not taste perfect, but you can have faith that it isn't poisoned!

I'd second that. My guess is that the problem is more likely to be the bit-supply (the Internet transfer) than how fast FF processes the bits when the've arrived.

Mozilla 1.7.5 is basically Netscape without AOL and the commercials....

Where Firefox is just a browser 1.7.5 is a suite including E-mail, html editor, all sorts of add in and add ons, ect

I have the right Mozilla Firefox now!!! I see what everybody was talking about, it is nice, seems faster, has lots of skin options and stuff, and is more secure. It may only be what you was discussing in one of the other post Eff that it just hasn't been targeted that much yet but it doesn't really matter why, its more secure.

Also yes, I have to use IE to go on my credit card and banking sites but the two browsers seem to be working fine, I use IE for banking, and firefox for everthing else. I am liking it.

I give firefox a two bananas up. :nana: :nana:
