Coming to New York in a few weeks to celebrate my daughters big 16. She wants to become an architect and I'm a theatre and costume buff...we both love good food.
Give me your best tips...secret spots...must sees...that might relate to these interests.
Please and thank you ❤

Welcome to my city, I can give you a seafood restaurant. Go to a restaurant called Upstate, it's by 1st Avenue 5th street, great food and drinks. Call first to make sure you can bring a minor with you, but I do remember someone bringing their baby with them, but it was early

Thanks...I'm making a list...!! And we love seafood. We're hard to impress though...being from the maritimes;)

Have a great time Ruby. My daughter wants to do Fashion Design and wants to go to New York so badly! We were suppose to go to visit Emmy, but that fell through. She will get to go to Italy with her program her Junior year and I'm trying to figure out how to hide in her suitcase then. You are an awesome Mom for taking her! :rose:

Happy Hour Oyster Deal is good, believe me the flavors are delicious.

I love New York City 💕. Be sure to go to Joe’s Shanghai and order soup dumplings. You won’t be disappointed. I’d drive to NYC just to have them.

I'm so excited to do this trip!!!
Fashion Design is fun...I took historical clothing and costume design and hoped to make it to New York to further my studies but then 911 happened...:(
Awww...and Emmy trip would be so fun. Hopefully you make it at some point!
An Italy trip sounds great too..Maybe you could chaperone!

I see a lot of eating in our future. Note to self* Pack tights lol

There's many places you can go to, but depending on what you want to do. You already know midtown and some places downtown have Musicals

Do they still have the Southwest NY Cafe down by the World Trade Center area? Used to be fabulous when I lived out east

Last I checked it was still out there, but I haven't been around there in a while. I used to work around there, but since I work more uptown now I can't be sure. Still plenty to do out here though

When you walk around the city, try to wear dark neutral colors. Also, don't look in other people's faces and smile. Wear your purse not hanging on your shoulder, but put your head and shoulder through the loop. Don't look up at the buildings; you look like a tourist. Don't drive through any tunnels with luggage in the back seat; you'll get stopped by police and asked "what are you doing?" Wear androgynous, bulky, oversized clothing; otherwise rape. Never walk alone. Always walk quickly like you know where you are going. If you drive there, or fly and rent a car, don't park on the street. Don't use parking garages, or you'll find out how expensive NYC can get and thereby why NYers are usually penny pinching. Better yet, use a taxi. Don't be embarrassed to ask the hotel or restaurants to call you a cab. At least the finer restaurants and hotels with a doorman. Greasy spoons and motels, don't expect much, although it never hurts to try. Try to carry traveler's checks (and keep the numbers in your suitcase).

Bullshit.
No one does travelers checks anymore. Carry some cash, but a good debit.
Travel light.

Make eye contact and talk to people. Touristy NYC is NOT unfriendly.

If you go to Queens or Brooklyn, eat pizza. Eat ethnic. DO mom and pops.

Go way uptown.
Go way downtown.

Go to The Strand bookstore. It is THE bookstore.

Go to the parks. Go to street fairs.

Go to Grand Central Station and eat oysters, even though the Long Island oysters are NOT QUITE on season.

Take the subway.
Give money to a street performer.
Don’t eat at chain restaurants.
Don’t you dare.

Bring $$$$
Wear comfy shoes.

I hope you have a great time. It’s a wonderful City. I should know. It’s mine.

Also. Your “bulky clothing otherwise rape” comment is extremely victim blaming. And your overall view of NY screams never been out of West Virginia.
You are a stick in the mud in most posts. What the fuck.

Yes.
And buckets of beer.

I haven’t been down there since new One went up. I just can’t. But I know they still have that sweet downtown area.

Also, walking around Manhattan proper can get hot. Layers.
I wouldn’t do leggings.
More, capris.

I'm glad you set the record straight, Farawyn. Obviously some people haven't been to New York since 1977!

... I should know. It’s mine.

Ah, now I know why all my complaint letters have gone unanswered.

What, no mention of museums?

Yes, touristy NYC isn't unfriendly... as long as you have money and are spending it. Then again, NYC after dark is another matter.

Not for nothing, but best to stay away from East New York, that's mine.

Good. Stay far away.
Please.

Actually, airhead, I was talking to the OP and not you, much like you weren't talking to me going to the strand bookstore.

Yes, I haven't been in NYC since 1977... blah ha ha! Let's see what Wiki has to say...

wiki said:
Since the late 1950s East New York has had some of the highest crime rates in Brooklyn, and is considered by some to be the borough's murder capital, alongside Brownsville. Many social problems associated with poverty from crime to drug addiction have been prevalent in the area for decades. Despite the decline of crime compared to their peaks during the crack and heroin epidemics, violent crime continues to be widespread in the community. East New York's 75th Police Precinct reported the highest murder rate in the city in 2011, according to crime reports compiled...

Is Brooklyn NOT part of NYC??? Ah! NYC's best kept secrets! hush hush, Keep with the program. Ignore that man behind the curtain. Gotcha. The oppressive police state has cleared out all crime since 9/11

She said she’s going to NYC. Which means Manhattan.
I don’t care to whom you are speaking. It’s a public board. Not only was your answer a downer, sexist, fear inducing and off putting, but you’re not a New Yorker.
Anyone can Wiki. She’s asking for experience.

Also, nice name calling. I may be many things you don’t like, but airhead is not one of them. Go bark up another tree.

Toots, when I have to think for the both of us, there's a hell of a lot worse names I could be calling you, so consider "airhead" as me being polite. But you're right. I'm sorry, I forgot. "New Yorker" means "fragile personalities" nowadays.

You're right, let's let the tourists travel to "Manhattan" (wink wink) and keep the positive tourist money coming in! I mean, Manhattan has border guards that stop criminals from venturing anywhere else, right? The Big Apple shines! Gotta keep that positive tourism money coming in, otherwise how do we pay for our half million dollar fixer-upers? Oh, wait...

so, they were only going to Manhattan? Oops! my bad. Let's let the tourist wander blindly around and get eaten by the piranha. Entertainment like that is always a hoot! Because tourists KNOW that NYC means only Manhattan, and that they shouldn't venture anywhere else.

By the way, you can take the boy out of the city, but you never take the city out of the boy.

My mistake.
I usually talk to Men.

Goodnight.
