So what would make you vote conservative again?
Corbyn or Michael Foot being in charge of Labour again, actually I won't vote for either of the two big parties, I have no faith in either of them. Or Maggie comes back.
BTW I do know one of them is dead and the other is pretending.

So Boris has done the right thing and decided not to run. I doubt that the members vote will now be required. I suspect that Penny will either not get the 100 votes needed or withdraw anyway because she doesn't have the support of the majority of the MPs.

You guys are wasted on here with all your political commentary, isn't there a job for you on mainstream TV

'the right thing to do'.... hmmn, if he says so

In a statement, Mr. Johnson said he believed he had a path to victory in the contest to replace Ms. Truss. But he said, “I have sadly come to the conclusion that this would simply not be the right thing to do.”

Mr. Johnson said he did not believe he could govern effectively without a unified party in Parliament. Despite what he said were his efforts to reach out to Mr. Sunak and his other rival, Penny Mordaunt, “we have sadly not been able to work out a way to do this.”
so where was his path forward? not seeing it

It was the right thing to do for the Conservatives and for the nation. Boris would have been divisive among Tory MPs, and he faced an Enquiry as to whether he lied to the House of Commons over Partygate. If he were to be found to have lied - he would be finished as PM again.

What he wanted from Rishi or Penny was the promise of a senior cabinet post. They wouldn't offer him that because he is still tainted.

'Johnson has said he is not running after only making it to about 60 declared backers by Sunday evening'
despite earlier lying
"I can confirm that I have cleared the very high hurdle of 102 nominations"
There's someone else with bad hair who's a compulsive liar and cheat.
Sunak will have to do and should keep the market thieves happy. What's another couple of years of austerity anyhow?

he pulled out because it was an untenable position to be in and would have resulted (had he been voted back in) in a second booting, not because he felt it would be the right thing to do. It was, but i won't swallow whole the conceit that bojo did this out of any sense of decency or respect for conservatives or the country as a whole. His motives were purely selfish. imo :)

I concur, he’s a selfish, self centred, misogamist, who only thinks of himself.

Perhaps a wee whisper in his ear from the men in grey suits. Do not stand and keep your gob shut and perhaps just perhaps the standards and privileges will find that you are stupid rather than having willfully misled the house. Also it damages his brand if he is kicked out for lying for the nth time. They will no doubt have plenty of other dirt on him. The civil servants paid not to report wandering hands etc. I hope that who ever gets in settles the markets and extended the energy piece cap and pinches labour idea of national energy generation based on renewable. Then gives us a baby unicorn for Xmas I understand the are quiet tasty

He just simply didn't have the numbers. Tried to blag and it failed.
He did, however, have enough numbers to be a nuisance to the next PM and get in the way of party unity.
He had the minimum numbers but he also had a lot of Tory MPs saying 'anyone that isn't Boris'. He could not have won. But not standing? He hasn't lost.

By minimum numbers, do you mean the 102 where only 60 had publicly backed him? Or am I missing something? I've got covid and haven't really slept so that is entirely possible!

He had just over 100, many of whom had not said publically that they were supporting him. Some, previously silent, since his decision to refuse to run, have said they would have backed Boris but now they back Rishi.

The problem would have been that Boris is still very popular with the wider party membership. If it had come to a contest between two candidates to be referred to the wider party - Boris would probably get more members' votes than an opponent. If so, that would leave Conservative MPs with a real problem - many hate Boris and would find working for him impossible.

No thanks. I'm not good at talking over people.
The other problem is that the some journo are just thick as mince even more so than the MP they are interviewing.
How the fuck do some of these people get selected and then elected time after time it is really quite disturbing.
And now the cons have another first to crow about - First Asian PM
Bit of a way to go to match the Irish tho
Still the markets seem to have pick up a bit - but as the old saying goes even a dead cat will bounce

The First past the post system means that in some safe seats the party in control could put up a monkey as the candidate and he still would be elected. That applies to both major parties.

But safe seats are usually filled with people who will vote as they are told, no matter what.

we only have his word for that, don't we?

This is my issue with it. He has, consistently through his career, shown himself to be untrustworthy and a liar.
And if someone from the 1922 comes out and says Johnson had the votes, then let's see them. Don't trust that cabal either.
