New author stories

Allow me to chime in as I'm a bit more acquainted with this particular issue.
...
Chill the fuck out and let the guy be instead of defending a flawed automated system that has been proven to wrongfully flag a gazillion times already.
I'm not defending the system, but I'm super not interested in hearing about polishing my awards from someone with a typo in their first thousand words. I mean I'm absolutely an arrogant know-it-all so-and-so but come on.

Spoken like someone trying to win an argument.
So, just to be clear, your argument has now officially strayed from discussing the shitty system used here to you trying to diminish me as a writer.

Again, wait until the body is cold, vulture. You risk getting your nose bent out of place.

There is no argument to be won here. You want us to feel like you are taking your amazing, award winning talent elsewhere.
You've written one, pretty average story here. Congratulations on that, but it isn't a big deal.
This isn't an airport, you don't have to announce your departure, no one cares. Of course if you WANT to be lumped in with the drama queens who are all about that... well... enjoy it.

As for your "vulture" nonsense. OP asked a question, I wrote a polite response requesting more information so that we could help. If that meets your definition of "vulture" behavior, well...that's a you problem.
I've provided editing and feedback to a number of new authors who were struggling to understand the way Lit works. Their stories all ended up published.
I suspect I will do so in the future. There are plenty of helpful people here, and a few assholes. If you insist on tarring everyone with a broad brush... don't be surprised when people get tired of your shenanigans.

No. you're ten miles down the road in this thing.
A newbie came on and complained about a rejection.
They were given a snide, condescending reply that I took exception with.
The vultures then descended on me and I've been brushing them off ever since.

It's really that simple.

Who am I "tarring?" Where is my "broad brush?"

See, here's the thing: yours was the fourth post. Meaning, just two other replies preceded yours.

I have a really hard time seeing either of those two as even remotely "snide" or "condescending." Both made the correct suggestion: that it's best for someone seeking the AH's help to provide more information.

Then along came you.

In three paragraphs, you recounted your own similar efforts. Well and good. Then your fourth paragraph immediately assumed bad faith on the part of a number of future responses.

If you cannot see why some took exception to that, then I doubt there's any help for you here, one way or another. Surely, if you take a step back, you can see how that might be received?

On an unrelated note, it is NOT your place to "take exception with" replies on another poster's behalf. I doubt the OP asked you to do that. If I had been the OP, I'd have immediately informed you that I didn't appreciate your efforts, then invited you to shut the fuck up because you don't speak for anyone but yourself. You most assuredly don't speak for the OP. You're nobody's white knight, honestly.

And look at my reply to OP.
It was a perfectly reasonable response. It wasn't snide or condescending. Other people have made similar, reasonable, statements.
No one can help without more information as to the nature of the rejection.

You've turned this thread into your own personal pity party.

Nope, you turned it into a resentful feeding frenzy.
All while thinking I cared about your attacks.

The paragraph that assumed "bad faith."

There are those here who will try to somehow make it your fault or accuse you of being impatient simply because they haven't dealt with this themselves... yet. They point vaguely at something that happened in October, but admit they don't know exactly what it was - just, something.
The "bad faith."
Without knowing the thin and unhelpful reason that Laurel gave you I can only assume (as you have) that there is a massive conspiracy against you personally. Clearly, that's the case right?

Or maybe, as it was for me when I first started here, that my writing wasn't yet up to snuff. It would have been great if she had taken the time to completely read my story and give me a complete critique but instead she advised I seek out an editor. Sooooo unhelpful, right? Because I'm sure she's got mountains of free time though she's checking hundreds of stories daily, by herself.

🙄

Where did I steer the OP wrong?

From my perspective, it's not about defending the system. I was as pissed as anyone at how the Halloween submissions were fucked up. What I see happening is that when some people who ask for help and advise or have an issue with how the site is run, don't hearing what they want to hear from authors with long and varied experience on the site, they respond by telling us our experience doesn't count, that we are "the elite" or "the clique" or that we get special treatment from Laurel, because, uh, reasons. No one has to take anyone's advice here, but if you ask for it, at least have the courtesy to decline it respectfully.

Okay, I'm assuming that has nothing to do with me because non of that is relevant to what I've been getting hammered for here.

Okay, it's lunch time.

Continue on with out me for a bit. I'll clock back in later.

You missed my point.

My point is that you presupposed bad faith, which people then responded to. You set up a self-fulfilling prophecy. And now that it has fulfilled itself, you are loudly aggrieved.

None of this should matter to you, though, since you're "leaving the site." Right?

I'm getting EmilyMiller alt vibes…or maybe just a fangirl?

No, not what I was thinking at all.

Such advice isn't always given respectfully, and this wasn't the only thread where this particular issue was discussed.

I told you what my perception was back when I started frequenting this place. People are all nice and kind when you are bubbly and positive and excited about writing, but can often become snide when you criticize something. And on top of all, authors are so sensitive about their writing. It's so easy to get offended or triggered.

This place takes quite some getting used to, and that's not the fault of new people. Some veteran members are very blunt and protective of Lit and Laurel, often not caring about whether these new people understand the dynamics of this place.
