I have had a back-burning story for a while about a husband who realises that the flame has gone out of his marriage and he decides to out it back. In a very romantic and erotic way.

Problem is that for the life of me I can't think how he can have the life-changing revelation to do this.

Any ideas?

Perhaps his wife has an affair.
Perhaps he sees she's interested in someone else.
Maybe she asks him to seek counseling.
Maybe he finds the business card of a divorce lawyer.
Maybe he finds himself attracted to someone else and that makes him realize he needs to get back on track with his own marriage.
Maybe it could be Valentine's Day, and they end up doing nothing special.
Maybe someone he knows gets married or is a newlywed and he realizes that he once had that and that he wants it back.

Just some ideas off the top of my head.

Just another thought. Create an environment at home that makes him think he is not getting what he wants. Then let him have a one night stand with someone he thinks would be perfect, only to find out that it has left him cold. And he finally realizes that what he already has at home is better than anything else.

Problem is that for the life of me I can't think how he can have the life-changing revelation to do this.

You could always steal from "It's A wonderful LIfe" and have his guardian angel show him what his life used to be like.

A near death experience -- either his or his wife's could also result in that sort of epiphany.

Being stranded by a storm and taken in by a loving couple that shows him what his marriage could be like -- either an older couple that shows him that marriage doesn't have to go stale or a young couple that reminds him of what he had.

A recurring nightmare a la "A Christmas Carol" that shows him what his life will be like without changing things.

What he needs to do is send his wife out for the evening, then create a particular atmosphere for her return:
Warming open fire.
Tie her up and abuse her.
Use a camera and record the erotic scenes.
Ask her to masturbate for you.
Ask her if she wants something that you have not thought of giving her.

I think T.H. Oughts idea was good (go kiwi go ), and weird harold's a very good.

How about he has a life/ death experience as in an accident (he leaves his body and in the astral plane sees his wife engaging in a bi sexual fling, onto lesbian sex etc and at one point he enters her 'space' and body so that he can experience what she feels, and the sexual pleasure she gets from the sex that she is not getting from their marriage, he senses that her utmost wish is to be experiencing these things with him, and he is resuscitated in the energency room, seeing the light and returning to his wife, seeing her in a different way. Realising that she is a very sexy woman and all the oppurtunties he has missed out on.

He is a changed man and makes up for lost time.
Often after a life threatening event a person does go through a personality change.

Well - the other guys have some great ideas, but here is something simple and low key: Marriage. His best friend of X number of years is getting married - you know, the REALLY kinky one that no one in their right mind thought would ever settle down... HE's getting married. The Man character is the best man... And all through the day, his friend keeps bringing up sex, and how to keep the flame alive - inadvertently rubbing the subject matter into the maincharacter's face until he finally breaks down and realizes what's missing in his life.

er... Did I get a little carried away here? Heh. Anyway - that's ANOTHER idea. Can't have too many of those!

If Kevin Spacy didn't need a reason, then neither do you...just my opinion.
Sometimes you see the problem for a long while before you actually do something to change it. Illustrate the monotony of their lives by being repetitive, talk about the first morning, then go through the day and in the first 1000 words or so, show that his/ her days are identical; have him fantasize a few times a day (at the same time, would be best, fitting the pattern of his life-monotony again) then finally decide to do something to change it for a simple reason, such as he sees his wife changing her clothes and realizes exactly how attractive she is, sees something he hasn't noticed in a while...
