Yes, it should be illegal to start two tortoise threads in one day, but since it isn't...

Thanks to everyone for your name suggestions. Manu and I came up with the perfect pair of names for our two young Egyptian hatchlings. We wanted names that 1) weren't too cutesy (these are prehistoric animals, and they deserve respect damnit); and 2) had personal significance to us.

The names we chose came from the second movie Manu and I watched together, a movie that I'd seen some 40-odd times and loved every time. We watched in my parent's living room when I was 16, on about the third time we'd ever hung out together. Back then, we were just goofy kids trying to be friends.

Though Manu and I are nothing like the characters in this movie, our relationship is quirky in its own way. The names of the characters, we feel, are respectable enough to be appropriate for our little torts when they're 10 years old, or when they're 60 years old.

When Manu came up with the names, I was aghast that we hadn't thought of them sooner. How could we NOT name them...

Harold and Maude.

So there you go. Thanks again for all of the suggestions, and pics are on the way in the next week or so. :)

Sort of a May/December sort of thing, huh? Hope Harold is into older women...

Loved that movie!

So, do they share a mutual fondness for funerals and stealing cars?

Oh shit, oh dear! ;)

Love the names cool very cool I just bet they are adorable congrats on picking the names.

Personally, I would have gone with Egyptian names. If they were mine, they would be Isis and Osiris. Or maybe naming them after a queen and a pharoah.

I thought about that, Patryn...and was on the verge of choosing naming them Isis and Osiris (a suggestion, possibly from you, from the other thread), but when Manu said Harold & Maude I knew that was the right choice. I'd seen a site where a guy had picks of his sulcata tortoise Little Bob, and I knew I had to have a name that cool. A tortoise named Bob - just makes you crack a smile, don't it?

I also considered Latina and Lasher, but naysayed that one for fear of causing trouble with their respective spouses.

So Harold & Maude it is. Gil, they're young, so it remains to be seen if they'll follow in the path of their namesakes. If she starts carrying around skeleton keys and he buys a hearse, then I'll KNOW I'm in trouble...

Thank you.

I just thought you would like to know that my Maternal grnadmother's name was Maude. I'm pleased that I've made such a strong (if subconscious) impression on you that you could devine her name to match with mine for your torts.

You have that affect on people, WH. I wouldn't be surprised in many of the fine users of this site had children and/or pets named Harold. I tried to change Manu's name to Harold, but he's kinda stuck on the name he has.

I think "Latina" and "lasher" would have been excellent names....'cept they're not snapping turtles!!!

hmmmmm guess it's cause I often go for the younger guys .. ;)

as i said before I like the names but I can always offer Rose and Bud :D

just takin' a chance. What was Harold's real name? Bud something? Was it Bud Cort?

N

Yessir...it was Bud Cort. And he grew to be a rather odd looking old man. Not bad, just odd.

Thanks Laurel.
And yes he was odd. Kinda like that Charles Martin Smith guy from American Grafitti.

I just read somewhere that he (Bud Cort) was involved in an auto accident in 1979 and which necessitated years of plastic surgery, so that might explain his appearance. On the way back from a Sinatra concert, too. Poor guy! Two horrors in one night...
