Naivete

Well, most liberals I know tend to be free-thinkers.

Most people I know from the far right (religious right) tend to be mindless sheep.

Sorry, but I prefer to think for myself.

I am older but I am sure I have never called anyone here naive, especially you, I am sure I woudl remember something like that. Perhaps you were too close to home for them?

It is a way of being discreetly condenscending.........

a way of saying.......

'How nice you are trying, even though you dont know shit."

Yeah, but what I want to know is- Are these "college boys" or plumbers, mechanics, & electricians?;)

I think I am naive to certain situations and when someone points that out ... it does not offend me.

*shrug*

I am a guy mid 20's and I dont get it much here but at work I do from people who don't know me, once they know me and understand about my opinions they either accept them or choose not to be around me ( I dont really care )

and I was nieve about alot of things for too long thats for the name:( but on a lighter note. its almost monday that is an eternal truth that cant be changed. but I don't care I like going to work.

What?!?

You haven't been struck down by bitterness and cynisism (don't spell check me gdi) into believing the hard facts by which you choose to seek out and believe? You haven't excused the intolerance in your heart with a Darwinian sense of survival of the fittest? You haven't learned from the school of hard knocks that might equals right?

You are sooooo naive.

I know nothing of which I speak.

Okay....let me understand you here:

1. several men (who have never spoken to each other)

2. each best you in a series of discussions

3. in which you are factually incorrect

4. and they each suggest at some point you are naive in your thinking.

Your Conclusions:

1. Everyone is out to get you

2. It's the Patriarchy!

By the way....you never did reconcile that whole "I won't have diamonds", "I love diamonds and have several" thing....or was the whole thread just built on a fib?

Is this thread another ruse?

Will we find out in 40 posts that you actually dig old conservative geezers because they're so wise and teach you so much?

......hey, hold it...you've already said that in the younger woman/older man thread !!!

You're so funny, Lav....must be all that Evian.

So...what do you REALLY want to talk about?

Back to the "liberals as free thinkers" issue:

Free thinkers are dreamers.
They have vision that extends past the concrete walls of society.

They think out of the box.

To conservatives, this dreaming is naive as they see only the concrete and not beyond.

IN terms of shutting women, or people down in an argument, too often, on the board, one person attempts to end a debate with "YOU " statement.

Yes, condescending and derrogatory comments to end a debate that seems either endless or unwinnable seems to be the modus operandi of many.

Age has nothing to do with it, Lavey.
I get the same thing and I am a bit older than you are.

Sometimes, I think strong, intelligent women are not well recieved in today's society. This statement has nothing to do with whether we are right or wrong...just not well recieved. Placing us in our proverbial place, helps to keep the piece in the eyes of many.

1. I never said I would never have diamonds.

2. Diamonds None for me thank you. (first words in your thread)

3. There is nothing contradictory about my statements.

Okay, we'll let that one rest. Perhaps it's my patriarchical, memory-loss riddled mind that sees it differently.

:)

Now....the issue at hand.

I gather you are having trouble with people who disagree with you patting you on the head and saying:

"There there Sparky, you're quite the young pistol, aren't you? One day you'll be quite wise in these matters, I'm sure."

That sort of thing?

Happens to me all the time amongst older businesspeople.

Sometimes they're right, sometimes not.

Is that it? Anything else?

There is no winner in such an argument.

And there never can be. Naivete is based on feelings. There is no doubt that those feelings can be deeply held, but generally feeling yeild to simplistic solutions without consideration of the laws of "unintended consequences", or that human nature is a bit more complex than one imagines when they're young.

Young folks tend to forget that us old fogies were once young ourselves. They also tend to forget that the ancients were far better observers than ourselves of human nature. They had more time to do so, and were in situations where the strengths and weakness's of each individual of the community had to be known for the community to continue. It was raw survival. Now, we see that survival is taken for granted and many of these observations (as found in Greek Literature, the Bible, the Q'uran, the Bahgatavitas, the observations of Buddha, and others) are somehow no longer relavent.

You see, you have reflected the arrogance of youth in this thread. That somehow you know something that us old fogies don't. Not true. You are sophmoric in even believing so. You really know nothing that we don't. But by challenging us, you are on the road to learning. Perhaps that will take you elsewhere, only time and experience will tell.

AFter a few more moments of thought....

perhaps the true test is to save this thread and read it again when you are 35, 45 and 55.

Then, you will have answers to your questions.

You may decide you are right on or laugh yourself silly.

from dictionary.com

na·ive or na·ïve
adj.
Lacking worldly experience and understanding, especially:
Simple and guileless; artless: a child with a naive charm.
Unsuspecting or credulous: “Students, often bright but naive, betand losesubstantial sums of money on sporting events” (Tim Layden).
Showing or characterized by a lack of sophistication and critical judgment: “this extravagance of metaphors, with its naive bombast” (H.L. Mencken).

I agree with Lav about this "naive issue" - which is something I've encountered myself, in making an argument on the board, sometimes being young/a woman/a liberal/whatever and expressing an unpopular (at least on this board) opinion has caused "oh, you're so naive posts" to be made. Like her, I find such posts nonsense and a reflection that the writer is unable to come up with a stronger argument.

I've said this in private and I'll say it in public. When I think of Lance I think of a perverted old guy watching Dawson's Creek and Jerking off to the kissing scenes.

Yes, this is a personal attack. Yes I am talking about Lance personally, the image he has portrayed on the board and my thoughts on them.

He has NO respect for women of any age. Any woman who disagrees with him or debunks him in any way or God forbid shuns his sad little attempts at flirtation is considered by him to be either naive or a bitch.

You're a sad ugly little man and I for one wish you had never come to the GB.

I'm sorry Sunstruck, but I couldn't read what you were saying there...I was wiping my cum off the screen again while looking at your av there little grrl.

Say....want some candy?

Ding ding ding.

We have a winner for the most off-topic post to a thread for the night!

Yeah, I should read more threads than just this one.

It might not be the biggest offense.

No, it's usually a reflection that the writer is basing the argument on emotions and idealistic unrealites. One can't argue logically with that.

Lavender, I'd like to give you a considered and serious answer. Let me ask a simple question.

Do you ever read the posts of other people here (male or female) that you sincerely believe are naive?

I guess I mean to ask, if you ever read posts from people who express opinions that, although sincerely felt and expressed, seem to come from a more "youthfully inexperienced" perspective than you have?

To expand on the idea, just imagine that you are in your mid-20's, and someone is ten years younger than you; in their mid-teens. The perspective from which they post, on many subjects, will undoubtedly be from a comparitively "naive" perpective.
I have read many posts for you (and many others) that I felt reflectived a naivete on the subject being discussed. On other subjects, I have read your opinions with admiration and respect.

Knowledge, intelligence and wisdom are totally different things. My definition of wisdom includes something about "the impact of experience on knowledge." Even a post that demonstrates a persons knowledge of a subject, can show a great deal of naivete when it fails to reflect wisdom. Often the greatest expression of wisdom is silence in the face of naivete.

Why do people in their late teens and 20's seem to think that adults suddenly stop learning and growing when they become adults? Yes, I know that there are plenty of stupid people of all ages, but why would a person in their 40's, 50's or older not be expected to be more experienced and wise than a younger person?

One of the things I'm guessing most younger people do not realize is how frequently an older person just keeps their mouth shut when they hear the naivete of youth.
