My Abhorred list...

You're crazy. I adore C++ I've started to learn it at least a hundred times. And that's just in the last year alone. Now, Java, I hate that. Haven't even cracked the book once. Proximity = love to some people.

As a person who is fluent in both C++ and Java, you ladies are way off track. KM, if you like C++ (and I do) then you will love Java. Java is what C++ should be, and more. The syntax is almost the same, but the whole mentality behind Java is so many light years ahead of C++, that once speed and size no longer become an issue then Java will fully replace C++.

It was that way when C++ evolved from C; C++ was slow, bloated, and people didn't understand OOP, but people rarely use C anymore.

Java is good, Java is the future - all hail Java.

CB, what do you like other than C++?

Java? If so, then good for you, but it's syntax is almost as hard as C++.

BASIC?? Yuck, please gag me with a spoon! A language for people who can't program!

COBOL? You've got to be kidding?

Eiffel/Smalltalk/Lisp?? Ehhh.. Okay, decent but eclectic, not supported as well as Java or C++, and slow and bloated to boot. They will never really go anywhere.

4th Gen DB languages?? Limited in use, not general purpose enough.

Uh...

HE'S MINE!!!!!!!!!

I'm about to start a computer science/engineering/um, what?? degree program.

Dish!

ADA!
ADA!
ADA!
ADA!

or can we have English instead.

How natural language programing?

ANd while we're at it can we make error messages that are
apologetic? >>>

"I humble myself before your esteemed personage, but I am the bearer of bad news, an outragous exception has occured in this mighty engine and my tears flow for the sanctity of your prose."

Better than what I got the other day >
"Keyboard not found...... Press F1 to continue."
Doh!

ADA is just Object Pascal with packages (and exceptions?? I forget - I've got an ADA book and compiler around here somewhere) designed by a committee.

ADA used to be a required language if you wanted to do government/DOD work, but even the government eventually learned that they couldn't always mandate the language that developers would use if you wanted to keep the best and brightest.

You girls only want me for my mind! All you care about is my intelligence and personality! Doesn't anybody want me for my cock anymore? Doesn't anybody care about the real me? All you girls are just so shallow! :D

KM, Two books I suggest for C++: both editions of Scott Myers "Effective C++". If you really want to know how to write, and how not to write good C++, then both editions (with different material in each) then get these books and follow the rules inside. Many companies just give these books to their programmers and say "follow these rules!"

For general Software Engineering in the real world, read "Code Complete" by Steve McDonnell (and any of his other books on S/W Engineering and project management as appropriate).

For Java, a good place to start is Bruce Eckel's book "Thinking in Java" which you can buy or get free on the web. Once you get into Java many of the Sun books on different Java APIs are good but David Geary is one of their best authors.

BASIC: Visual Basic is very good at programming a lot of things. I've written some programs in a few hours that can do amazing things...
VB is an okay prototyping language, or for quick and dirty stuff if you need to work with any MS apps. Beyond that, if you need to do anything of substance, anything that needs to be maintain, expanded, sold - forget it; even if you are very careful about your design and structure, it becomes a nightmare real quick. BTDT.

There are better prototyping languages/packages. I personally, prefer to prototype in the language I am going to use for the final product.

I figured with all the lists about ignores and ignorants and fascists, I'd make my own.

I abhor C++, I've made it a priority in my life to deter my fellow students from programming in it. It is TRULY and evil language.:p

I agree. I had such a horrible experiece with my C++ class in engineering. I mean the averages on the first two tests were 55 and 44 respectively. I did much lower then the average on both tests. People that had even taken C++ in HS before were getting 70's and 60's. That was the most pathetic excuse for a class ever.

Guessing fro mwhat it would have to do, yet be fairly easy to write and modify - Perl or something like Perl.

Maybe VB if that is easier for you.

Many schools are now using Java as a teaching language. Once you know Java C++ is a snap, and Java enforces good programming practices better than Pascal.

It was a real struggle for me to go from C++ to Java as the mentality was quite different even if the syntax is the same. But once I "got it", there was no going back.

Whatever you use, you know what would be cool? Something that would examine the times of certain troll's posting and the times of member's posting. It would be cool to find out just who never posts when certain trolls are posting - the inference being that maybe they could be the troll themselves. With enough data some trends would turn up.

See, this is what I mean - I have a suspicion that yayaidiot is really one of our other "illustrious" members from the UK, as in maybe another person who also knows certain facts about Hinduism and Indian culture.

It would be very interesting to see if the two had ever posted at the same time in different threads. I know it is possible to post as one person, then a minute later post as another if you are real quick about logging in and out, but I happen to notice that certain members seem to be missing when certain trolls post, and some patterns would probably come out in the analysis.

What's the matter? Afraid someone will discover who you really are?
