First post, first thread, lets see how it goes. I already know what physique I prefer to have, but I am curious to find out other peoples opinions. Is a muscular (not enormous pro-bodybuilder) physique sexually desirable. I'm talking about muscular like pro athlete. More definition than size. I lift weights, and I do it because it feels damn good (Almost as good as sex), but I want to know, do women (and men) tend to find the muscular, greek statue physique attractive?

Welcome to Lit :)

It all depends on the woman. Some women love a muscular physique, some are indifferent, some don't like beefcakes. It's like asking do men like brown eyes or not. I know that most women (and men) prefer their partners to be healthy rather than ascribing to a singular physical type. A muscular body does not denote health and satisfaction with life. My all is healthy, he takes care of his body but isn't obsessed with it and that's perfect for me.

You will get a different answer from every person you ask. Your kilometerage may vary.

Depends on the guy. If his personality sucks, his body doesn't mean much. But it counts if he tries to be healthy by staying active, eating right and keeping a sense of humor.

As a woman who has spent a fair amount of the time in the weight room over the years, I can certainly appreciate a man who takes enough pride in his appearance to do the same, as long as he doesn't do curls in my squat rack and he isn't all about the broscience.

That said, I probably wouldn't be interested in a long-term relationship with someone who was a competitive bodybuilder because I wouldn't want to have to plan my life around his competition diet and workout schedule. I'm not particularly high-maintenance, so I'm not interested in high-maintenance men.

Makes sense, I bought my own squat rack so I can curl in it, but NEVER in the gym. Yeah the competitive bodybuilder is not the look I'm talking about, they are a totally different physique than what I'm talking about. I'm talking Hugh Jackman muscle, Or Adrian Peterson running back muscle.

I like what someone said earlier, that if your a jackass (my words not hers) then your body type doesn't matter. But you don't sound like a jackass.

Personally, I'm not a fan of the rippling muscle look. I like a little softness. Not doughy, not like I want to poke your belly button and hear you giggle but soft enough to curl up into and not feel every muscle twitching beneath me. But I also like someone active enough that I can suggest anything and your are fit enough to do it. Bike riding, snow shoeing, cross country skiing. An active physique that's soft enough to snuggle with, that's perfection.

For the record, I'm not into Hugh Jackman.

I would agree, no amount of physical beauty can make up for an ugly personality/inner being, regardless of gender.

I think the word everyone is looking for is "athletic", that is to say, fit and toned, but not bulky, hard muscles, or the converse, doughy and soft.

My personal tastes lean towards women with a little more meat on their bones, still to the athletic side, but sturdy enough that I won't feel like I'm going to break her if I give her a hug. More Kate Upton than Kate Moss, for example. Though, as I first stated, I'm more interested in what is on the inside than the package it is wrapped in.

I wouldn't kick Jason Statham out of my bed for eating crackers.

I happen to love bodybuilder physiques. I prefer all-natural but beasts are fun to play with.

I also love lifting heavy, so it's nice to have something in common.

I'm 42, so my taste will be different than 22.

Underweight skinny men: turn off! I don't want anything breakable.

I like meaty and cuddly. When I run my hands up his arms and shoulders, I like feeling muscle, enough to hold me down. When I kiss his stomach or wrap my arms around him when we're spooning, I like the cuddly padding that keeps me warm and loves my cooking.

Examples: Nathan Fillion, Glenn Hetrick, Adam Baldwin, Harrison Ford, McGee on NCIS, Kevin James, Kevin Smith. You may be a little surprised at the Kevins, but extra cuddly on mature men is nice, and they have such great personalities, they have sexy in spades.

I've dated lots of different types - tall, short, skinny, not-so-skinny, athletic, and even a power lifter. It doesn't matter to me; if he has a good personality and sense of humor - and knows what to do with me in the bedroom - I don't really care too much about body style. I don't want someone who's morbidly obese, but I don't mind if they're a little overweight either. I also don't want someone who's so skinny that I'd worry about breaking them.

People have their fetishes, Kathleen Turner at 40 rocked my world, Madonna never.

But what most of us want is a partner who scratches the bad itches, and the bad itch can be anything.

Lets say that daddy runs off with your best friend, lets say that you then meet Mister Right who lives across the state from you, lets say that your major itch is a phobia for being alone. If Mister Right cant scratch that itch, cuz he owns a gold mine 200 miles away, and daddy comes back home (to lick his wounds and heal for the next adventure), youll dump Mister Right.

Personally I think all men are pretty....it's when they speak that determines whether they are sexy or not....:rose:

To me what makes someone pretty is the smile on their face. And that accounts for men and women. Look happy, and your prettiness takes a big jump.

Typical example would be professional models on the catwalk. They all look so sultry, as if they really hate their job. Those women even if they have the "ideal" sizes, are not pretty. OK wrong gender it's a thread about men but for men it's the exact same story.

And basically any body shape looks fine to me as long as it's a healthy shape. Not overly fat or skinny, and normal ratios. When the belly is bigger than the chest he should be considering exercising a bit more. And that's not necessarily lifting weights.

Many years ago, waiting in line for the Disney World Haunted Mansion, we saw Liberace ahead of us. It wasnt long berfore he died. But a young woman in our group went shithouse rat crazee for old gay Liberace. She acted possessed, and scared him I think.

So stop talking smack about your lofty, shits marble standards.

I think a person be it male or female being in shape is sexy in general. I think it says something about the person that they want to look as attractive as they can.

I think it says more when the people in question are married or in a long term relationship, because some let themselves go to hell when they are "taken"

Men are a prime example. Beer guts and man boobs and the only exercise they get is curling remotes and cans of coors.

But of course they will be the first to say a woman has a few extra pounds.

I have been a work out junkie since I was a teenager, but am into Martial arts so I am not big at all, just well toned and many women are attracted to that more then the totally "chiseled" look.

I think there is a missing undertone in what you've written that holds a universal truth. There will always be cultures of people who are attractive to each other. Women who aroused by martial artists will find them attractive for reasons other than mere physical beauty. There is something in the mindset of a martial artist that is unique to that culture. The same would hold true for the Liberace example. Some people have a music bug.. or a power lust.. or there will always be women who want a man in uniform.

Part of the attraction is not just the look; but what the look allows us to presume about the person. There comes a point in maturity where we learn to be less presumptuous and our worlds are opened to other types of beauty; but I don't think that the ideal image really goes away. We tend to be attracted to the package deal, whether it be the true person or not.

Exactly! Beauty is the default setting for many of us. But I did my genealogy 20 years ago, and discovered that almost all of my sires married women with exceptional intelligence; I get off on smart women, too. They never intimidate me because theyre so damn hot, in my mind. And my dames preferred slightly crazy, slightly religious, articulate men. Duellers and poets.

I tend to not like very chiseled muscles on a man. A must for me are broad shoulders, though. I need his shoulders to be wide, his arms strong. A little bit of softness in the tummy is fine but strong arms and chest, broad shoulders, about 6' will catch my eye right away. That said, my husband is short and he still caught my eye. He does have awesome shoulders and arms, though. He has been hitting the gym too much lately and losing some of his meatiness. I don't like it because I do not want him thin or chiseled--but I am not discouraging it because he's doing it for health reasons.

Sorry to go off on a tangent...Hugh Jackman is too lean for my taste. And, of course, if the personality sucks (or hes stupid) it kills it for me.

Women like robust, healthy, strong men. I dropped 60 pounds but am still pretty solid and strong. I could lose a few more pounds and still intimidate, but I find that women generally prefer a man you cant push over. The idea isnt to scare other men, the idea is for them to look at you and think, kicking his ass is too much like work.
