Most Romantic Songs, EVER!

Twelve hours.

Oh my!

With or without restraints? ;)

I figure you'd stay there voluntarily, unless you mean restraints

I'm reaching back to the days of 8-track tapes and little else to do of an evening

"Always on My Mind" by Elvis or Willie Nelson
The one by Willie Nelson, definitely. I also love his cover of "Stardust." There's something about Willie Nelson that gets to me even though I'm not a fan of C&W. And it's not just because I heard my favorite duck joke from him on Conan O'Brian's show, because the song predates the joke, which goes like this:

A duck goes into a bar and asks the bartender, "Got any grapes?"

<Initiates emergency maneuvers to avoid a near-threadjack>

Sorry about that. Where were we?

"Your Song" reminded me: Does anyone else remember "A Song for You" by Leon Russell?

No?

If you're old enough to remember but you don't, it could be because Leon's voice is an, er, acquired taste. Even for Neil Young fans like me. People who remember this song, remember it by the uber-vanilla The Carpenters, a brother-sister act who were the universe's way of counter-balancing Michael and LaToya.

Legend has it that Leon Russell wrote this song for singer Rita Coolidge after she dumped him for Kris Kristofferson. How romantic is that! To have your ex-lover write a famous love song about you after you've dumped him would almost make the dumping worthwhile.

Until the refrain. That's when the guilt would hit full-force...

Revenge by Love Song...Viewed in that light, these lyrics are a work of evil genius.

Candidate for "Lyrics Most Likely to Induce Guilt In An Ex-Lover":

Leon Russell's "A Song For You

I've been so many places in my life and time
I've sung a lot of songs, I've made some bad rhyme
I've acted out my love in stages
With ten thousand people watching
But we're alone now and I'm singing this song for you

yadayadayada, musicmusicmusic,
and then the Guilt Crescendo:

You taught me precious secrets of the truth witholding nothing
You came out in front and I was hiding
But now I'm so much better and if my words don't come together
Listen to the melody...my love is in there hiding

:(

I love you in a place where there's no space or time
I love you for in my life you are a friend of mine
And when my life is over
Remember when we were together
We were alone and I was singing this song for you

We were alone and I was singing this song for you...

How could that heartless bitch do this to him?

"A Song for You* Love it, but love it by Ray Charles more. :)

Think that's how Carly Simon got the idea to write "You're so Vain?" (not so much a romantic song)

Willie has a way with songs. I don't even like his voice, but I love his timing.

Oh, romantic. I'm thrown back to every couple in Jr. High dancing to "Open Arms" by Journey now...

Air Supply, anyone?

How many blank CDs do you have? I've seen some excellent choices here.

Hey,...you could be up 12 hours worth of uninterrupted kissing with all these selections.

;)
12 hours of kissing? For our boys who are shipping out tomorrow to fight the Nazi Menace? When the days are dwindling down to a precious few? And we haven't got time for the waiting game? That's just mean.

Thank you! I had forgotten that Ray recorded it. What a relief.

God love Leon Russell, a great songwriter, but his singing voice made Joe Cocker sound like Pavarotti. I broke down and bought a CD of Leon's just for that song, and ended up using it as a coaster.

Must go google Ray Charles singing "A Song for You."

Edited to add: Leon Russell also wrote a George Benson hit, "This Masquerade." He sang it, too, but he was acquitted.

I defintely second Amazed by lonestar -I adore that song. I like alot o the others too but I think two of my favourite, most romantic songs have been missed out so far:

More than Words :Extreme

Eternal Flame: The Bangles

for a kinda giggly sweet one I love the song Adam Sandler sings at the end of the Wedding Singer "I wanna grow old with you." Just for the line "I'll even let you hold the remote control!"

At your most beautiful - REM

My All -Mariah Carey

I'll stand by you -pretenders

Ok I'll leave it at that for now. Back with more later I'm sure!

Pretty much any song is good by Ray Charles. There's not a stinker in the collection. I've been a fan for years. Check out his "Country and Western" album. It's NOT what you'd think country is. (And no, that song's not on there.) I recommend it highly. (Grew up listening to it, and finally got it on CD last year)

"The Boys of Summer" ~ Don Henley

Makes me feel like I'm on the beach. I can smell the cheap suntan oil...

I thought I knew what love was
What did I know?
Those days are gone forever
I should just let them go -

But I still see you
Your brown skin shining in the sun
You got your hair combed back and your Wayfarers on
And I can tell you, my love for you will still be strong
After the boys of summer have gone

Only a select group of music aficionados will recall Conan O'Brian's boy band, "Dudez-A-Plenti." I watched the night they practiced their album-cover poses, selected their stage names/personas, and co-wrote their first single, "I Wish You Were My Baby." They started with the word "Baby" and the song just kind of built from there, as if it had a life of its own...

"I Wish You Were My Baby" by Dudez-A-Plenti

Baby, I wish you were my baby
I want to make a baby
Let's make electric power
In fear you should not cower
'Cause girl I will protect you
I promise not to sex you
And I wish -
ooh-
I wish you were my baby!

Where are they now?

Edited to explain that I memorized these lyrics while working for a company that was busy going out of business. For weeks, there was nothing for the remaining staff to do, so we watched this clip and laughed until our sides hurt.

We also watched Spinal Tap a few tims. (Big-Butt-Woman is not as romantic as you'd think.)

Work is a bitch, isn't it?

romantic songs ever

Please be gentle; This is my first post. Here are some of my favorite romantic songs. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" and "Killing Me Softly With His Song" by Roberta Flack (a loop with those two should be all you need); "You Send Me" by Sam Cooke; "Do You Want to Dance" by Bette Midler ( I know she covered it, but I like her version best); "Never My Love" by various people (Okay, I can only remember the Redbone version right now.) Also, check out some Al Green, too. I'm anxious to see your whole playlist. Please post it. Thanks.

welcome Glynndah -seconding your "killing me softly" recommendation. Very smoochy song!

An excellent first post. If you value your sanity and don't want to develop terminal insomnia, run screaming and don't look back. Otherwise, welcome to the Hangout.

Lots of good material by Bette Midler. And how did I forget "Killing Me Softly"?

I pondered that one. Then I remember Dr. M or someone saying that romance and fucking aren't the same, and I realized that "Let's Get It On" isn't necessarily promising a long-term commitment.

Same with Norwegian Wood, though.

There are a lot of sexy songs that aren't the least bit romantic, but I guess those two fall into a gray area.

(Mac: There's your next CD compilation. "Bedroom Songs That Are Romance-Free. For those special times when you don't care, and don't want to care." :D )

You're absolutely right. I can't even begin to disagree. It's just, when I think Al Green, I think Marvin Gaye.

How about..... hm........

a little Barry............. Manilow, not White. lol*

Being a old Patriarch and all, I agree with Doc about the pre-rock songs being more romantic and I second shereads choice of September Song. Here is no particular order are five I doubt many others will mention-youth and good taste being so rampant around here.

Righteous Brothers - You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling

Elvis - The Wonder of You

James Brown - It's a Man's World

The love theme from Franco Zeffirelli's 1968 film, Romeo and Juliet

The Beatles (Paul McCartney solo) - Till There Was You

The Vogues - You Are My Special Angel

The Uniques/Harrry Connick Jr - All These Things

The touch of your lips next to mine
Gets me excited, makes me feel fine
The touch of your hand, your sweet hello
The fire inside you when you're holding me close
Your love so warm and tender
The thrill is so divine
It is all these things that make you mine

If you would leave, I surely would die
When you were ten minutes late
I started to cry
I've got it bad, but that's all right
As long as you're here every night
Your love so warm and tender
The thrill is so divine
It is all these things, that make you mine

Call me crazy but I think

'I don't want to miss a thing' - AEROSMITH

is totally romantic.
