Women Are Diagnosed with PTSD More than Men, Even Though They Encounter Fewer Traumatic Events, Says Research

WASHINGTON--Males experience more traumatic events on average than do females, yet females are more likely to meet diagnostic criteria for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), according to a review of 25 years of research reported in the November issue of Psychological Bulletin, published by the American Psychological Association (APA).

The authors reviewed 290 studies conducted between 1980 and 2005 to determine who is more at risk for potentially traumatic events (PTE) and PTSD - males or females? The results of the meta-analysis found that while males have a higher risk for traumatic events, women suffer from higher PTSD rates. PTSD is defined as an anxiety disorder precipitated by a traumatic event and characterized by symptoms of re-experiencing the trauma, avoidance and numbing and hyperarousal.

From the review, researchers David F. Tolin, PhD of the Institute of Living and Edna B. Foa, PhD, of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine found that female study participants were more likely than male study participants to have experienced sexual assault and child sexual abuse, but less likely to have experienced accidents, nonsexual assaults, witness death or injury, disaster or fire and combat or war. Sexual trauma, the authors conclude, may cause more emotional suffering and are more likely to contribute to a PTSD diagnosis than other types of trauma.

Women's higher PTSD rates were not solely attributable to their higher risk for adult sexual assault and child sexual abuse, explained Tolin. PTSD rates were still higher for women even when both sexes were compared on the same type of trauma.
Thanks, feminism, for coddling women like this.

Yes those coddled women having PTSD or sexual assaults rape and domestic abuse....

Cracks me up when they're trying to pretend that every man encounters all the situations associated with PTSD and most haven't.

Another skewed spin by lits resident misogynistic munchkin.

Interesting study. Here is the actual journal article.

From the article:

If sex differences in symptom patterns do exist, one possible
explanation is that gender role expectations may be more supportive
or tolerant of certain symptoms in female participants and of
other symptoms in male participants. Social expectations about
gender appear to be fairly consistent over time and across cultures,
suggesting that men and boys are viewed as active and aggressive,
whereas women and girls are viewed as passive and emotional
(Eagly, 1987). Belligerent or aggressive behavior might be considered
more acceptable responses to trauma for men and boys,
whereas anxious or depressed behavior might be considered more
acceptable for women and girls. Thus, the experience of a PTE
may exacerbate preexisting socially influenced gender differences
in response to distress, resulting in different posttraumatic symptom
patterns. However, this explanation is speculative and awaits
empirical test. Specifically, it remains to be seen whether the
preexisting gap in these symptoms widens after a traumatic event.

Of course, the fact that the different social expectations are "fairly consistent over time and across cultures" suggests that biological differences between the sexes are a primary cause of the differing social expectations. So it is likely that men and women naturally respond differently to traumas, and different social expectations are both created by this difference and exacerbate this difference.

More men are victims of violence than women. Perhaps a silly dickless mangina like you doesn't understand what 'traumatic event' means?

In the old days PTSD was reserved for real trauma...like ship wrecks and holocausts and intense, prolonged combat exposure. Now its a major excuse for all Gods snowflakes. In recent times the military uses it to cover what usta be bad conduct discharges. Most wounded warriors get in serious shit for trouble caused by alcohol and drugs, but no longer get tossed out with bad conduct discharges and no bennies.

Just before I retired from the state one of the gals I worked with went to Iraq with the National Guard. She wasn't a warrior, she drove a truck from the airport to the embassy. No combat was involved, and she hadda MP escort. Well one day she drove by a dead raghead, and it was the end of her life. She came apart at the seams.

She got a medical discharge for PTSD, and early retirement from the state for her disability. She made a guest appearance at work, and I laughed at her. In Vietnam I often ate my lunch sitting near wood pallets stacked with dead bodies. All the goddamned flies were a major nuisance, but no PTSD for anyone.

Poor snowflakes.

I once had 45 mortar rounds fall around me, in a space about the size of a living room. It was fuggin loud! No PTSD for this lil snowflake. But I did get two aspirin when my skull was fractured and most of my teeth were broken. I hadda wait a week to see a doctor.

Women in the West get PTSD not just from rape but also from fucking catcalls.

Dudes get PTSD from seeing their friends die, or having to grow up in a school where bullying was sanctioned. And when it happens to them the feminists dismiss their experiences or even make fun of them. ("MALE TEARZZZ")
