Nothing is ever entirely safe, when it comes to edge play and that goes
for any form of needle play as well. The most important things to know
are WHAT TYPE OF RISKS are you prepared to take and how to PREVENT
really bad mistakes and mishaps.

The first thing to be aware of is that ALL partners should have an equal
understanding of (their) safety and the risks they are about to take
(including the submissive partner). Both should have adequate anatomical
knowledge, especially about arteries and veins and their location in the
body.

These are the main risks you run:

* Infection - as a result of lack of hygiene
* Ruptured arteries - as a result of imporper placement of needles
* Damaged nerve ends - again the result of improper needle placement
* Death - which may be caused by creating airbubbles in arteries


Safe areas

No two human bodies are alike and as a result there is no failsafe
method to indicate where and where not to place any needles. However,
there are a few useful rules of thumb.

Use fleshy areas only: the buttocks, the breasts, schoulderblades and
labia.

Avoid arms, legs, hands, feet, the head, neck, the belly and the kidney
area (lower back) as well as the spine. Especially stay away from joints!

When uncertain about any area or the position of veins, arteries and
nerves: don't go there!

Needle play is only for those, who are in an excellent physical
condition. If you have any medical problem or are on medication: don't
do any needle play.

Hygiene

Hygiene is an absolute must. A needle breaks the skin and - while doing
so - instantly breaks the bodies' main line of defense against diseases
and infections. These may be Aids and other sexually transmitted
diseases, but many, many others as well. The size of the wound, no
matter how small it is - does NOT matter.

Educate yourself about sexually transmitted diseases (including about
how they are transmitted) and in general: be clean. Wash and desinfect
the area to be punctured thoroughly (use a desinfectant of any kind or
anti-bacterial handsoap) and the dominant should thoroughly wash his
hands and arms as well, immediately before active play. On top of that:
ALWAYS where latex gloves, to protect both yourself and your partner.

Use pre-sterilized disposable needles ONLY and use them ONLY ONCE.
Discard them immediately after use by putting them them in a needle
container (available from most drugstores and pharmacists) and - instead
of simply throwing them out - returning them to a pharmacist. Open the
individual package only just before the needle will actually be used.
Don't spread them out, for example, or display unpacked needles.

Count your needles prior to, during and after play, to make sure no
stray needle is left behind. This may cause serious physical damage to
yourselves and others!

Practise

Trying to puncture the skin may not be as simple as it sounds. The skin
and lower tissues are tough and hard to penetrate. Doing this requires a
steady hand and some physical force (not too much, since this may break
the needle).

The best thing to do is to buy a chicken and use this to practise. It is
as close as you can get to trying to penentrate the human body.

Keep the needle superficial only. Do NOT go in deep and never try to
push through to hard.

The safest way to penetrate is to take some of the skin and flesh
between the thumb and forefinger of one hand and pull it up. Next stick
the needle through, making sure it comes out at the other end. This
should be done in one clear move. Wriggling the needle, in an effort to
get in, is painful and dangerous since you may break the needle.

In the event anything goes wrong, consult a doctor or a first aid center
as soon as possible. Never ever hesitate to call on medical help when
you need it, regardless your kinky inclination. Doctors, nurses and
paramedics have seen it all before (and probably more) and they are
there to help and cure you, not to judge you.

Finally, have a first aid kit readily available and after play clean and
disinfect the area(s) again, dispose of needles and gloves and -
especially if you are not playing with your own partner - make sure
there will be no blood contact. This in order to prevent transmissionn
of (deadly) diseases.
