MN Seantor Paul Wellstone Killed in Plane Crash

Well, it certanly will make the election interesting. The Democraticparty has up to 7 days to select a replacement candidate. I can't think right now about who that might be. Then, of course, Jesse gets to appoint an interim Senator of his choice. It is impossible to predict just what that guy might do.

Cant they just take the guy who came in second during the primary?

We need to...physically intimidate liberals, by making them realize that they can be killed too. - Ann Coulter

God's blessing to the Wellstones. While I was never a fan of his politics, he always seemed like a good guy.

I saw the name Mondale in this morning's speculation.

Good point on the new law against free speech.

Dem Dem's get more milage out of dead people than your average necropheliac...

Of course, almost any court outside of KANSAS would overturn the law if it hurt a Democratic candidate... (Dead or alive :D !)

Some clarifications need to be made on MN election law...

Ventura may appoint a fill-in Senator, but that person would only serve until the winner of the upcoming election is known, then the winner automatically takes over for the rest of the term.

The Democratic Party in MN has until the 31st of October or maybe the 1st of November to appoint the person who will take Wellstone's place on the ballot. The already printed ballots will still be used but a sticker with the new candidate's name will be put over Mr. Wellstone's name. Absentie ballots will be counted as is, meaning Wellstone will still get the votes he had on those whether he is still the candidate or not.

As of the last I heard there were already rumblings by both parties on whether or not the Dems are required to put another candidate on the ballot or not. With the Republican's saying they must put another name on the ballot and the Dems saying that the letter of the law does not specifically require them to replace Wellstone.

Possible replacement candidates include but are not limited to... Walter Mondale, Mondale's son, 'Skip' Humphey, Mike Hatch and possibily one of Wellstone's sons if they are old enough to serve.

As I told my family when this happened I will tell you... I guess my vote has been decided by fate. Not quite the way I wanted it to be decided but it has been decided nonetheless.

How many on that list got beat by Jesse ;) ?

I don't know how much it really means considering it came from Jesse himself but at the newsconference he had in the afternoon he said that he would not appoint himself to fill in for Wellstone and that he wasn't even sure he would appoint someone to fill in for Wellstone.

Is he sure about the breakfast menu?

I bet Dashle, Gephart, and McAuliffe had contigency plans drawn up for just such an occasion.

Even Al Haig had a plan, man ;) ...

The oddest thing is that Wellstone was on his way to a funeral... Little did he know he was starting on the road to his own.

I feel for those lost with him and their kin...

He on the other hand, receives no sense of loss from me. He strictly believed in the direct opposition of anything American including the Constitution, unless he could hide behind it. Rest in pieces...jerk!

*Fuck P.C. :D

But he was a principled socialist. The kind dictators love cause they'll always cave. Don't worry, I doubt if the immediate family is focused on the Lit discussion so you don't have to mouth platitudes for the bereaved...

Absolutely, leaving in his trail of policies...

Co-sponsored legislation in 2001 to extend
Section 245(i) for one-year.
Sen. Wellstone co-sponsored S. 778 a one-year extension of Section 245(i), an immigration provision that allows certain illegal aliens to pay a fine and adjust their status to legal status. In addition, Section 245(i) removes the all-important security step that is performed by our embassies on potential immigrants in their home countries. Section 245(i) rewards illegal immigration, contributes significantly to the INS processing backlog, and poses a national security threat.

Voted for an amnesty for illegal aliens in 2000

Sen. Wellstone voted to include an amnesty for illegal aliens from El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, and Haiti in the Senate H-1B bill (S.2045). The move to include the amnesty with the H-1B legislation failed43-55 in a procedural vote on the Senate floor.

Voted to grant amnesty to close to one million
illegal aliens from Nicaragua and Cuba in 1997
Sen. Wellstone voted to grant legal status to Nicaraguans and Cubans who had lived in the United States illegally since 1995, along with their spouses and minor unmarried children. The overall ten year impact of this legislation will be the addition of some 967,000 people to U.S. population. There was no separate vote on the amnesty, as it was inlcuded in the DC Appropriations bill. The only opportunity Senators had to vote in favor of or against the amnesty was the Mack Amendment to S.1156. The Mack Amendment passed 99-1.

Now he's a good socialist...:D

Good vote getter too!

I'd double check on election day and make damn sure he doesn't vote.

He's STILL registered you know ;) ...

hahahahaha...... now THAT's funny.

humor based on truth is usually the funniest.:D

Me too Lavender, Oliver had a great point though. Mr. Wellstone's legacy should remain with us all. Go visit with the people that live in squalor and work with them. They need more support not less. Education Reform can't work on a Tin Cup budget. These young kids bring all society's problems with them into the classroom, that's the most logical place to address them. It'll take a generation or more but the sooner we start, the sooner we can mute the social darwinists.

Would you two please superimpose a graph of social spending verses poverty rates so that I can see you substantiated claims of knowing WTF you're talking about...

If Bush had gone down, you two *holes would probably be having a Let's figure out how to give Dick a heart-attack party...

Social misanthropes.
