EVELETH, Minn., Oct. 25 — Sen. Paul Wellstone, D-Minn., was killed along with seven other people, including his wife and daughter, in the Friday crash of a small plane, NBC News reported.
WELLSTONE, first elected to the Senate in 1990, his wife, Sheila, and his adult daughter, Marcia, were passengers on a twin-engine turboprop that crashed east of the Eveleth-Virginia Municipal Airport, NBC’s Tim Russert said. Authorities said all eight people aboard the aircraft were killed.
The St. Louis County sheriff’s office said the plane crashed about seven miles east of the airport, in northeast Minnesota 175 miles north of Minneapolis. The plane was identified as a twin-engine turboprop made by Raytheon.
TIGHT RE-ELECTION BATTLE
The death of Wellstone, 58, one of the Senate’s most liberal members who was locked in a tight re-election race against former St. Paul Mayor Norm Coleman, immediately raised questions about if another candidate could take his place on the ballot and who that might be.

The close Minnesota race is one of several around the nation that are considered key to control of the Senate, now dominated by Democrats by a one-vote margin.
Earlier this year, Wellstone divulged that he had been diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. He said he had been told by doctors he probably had had the disease for 15 years.
In addition to Marcia, Wellstone and his wife, Sheila, had two sons, David and Mark.
