Mic trouble

I have gone into the control panel, volume control, etc. And tried everything I could, but cannot seem to make it work. It's a plug-in play.
I have tried with a headset and now with just a mic.

Any suggestions?

There should be a control panel for sound where you turn off the built in mic, but it sounds like you tried that. Sometimes a mic has to go through a mixing board of some sort.
