How about the story of a king who is tired of his royalty and the ladies that throw themselves at him. He wants to earn the right to be with a woman, a woman who chooses him for being himself and not his royalty.

So he dresses up like a commoner and combs the back alleys of the kingdom, doing his best to get freaky with the wenches of the lower classes? I could see that making a decent story.

There is a slight little problem with the idea. A king is never single when he becomes a king. The royal family makes sure the sons are married before the current king dies. Usually this is to other royals and then the Duke and so forth daughters are looked at.

The way it works is a daughter is sent off to be with the husband her family decided she will marry. A son always stays there because he is the next king or an advisor to his brother. Sometimes a daughter stays there because there are no sons, this is not normal however. There is always a son because the king fucks the staff and other royals. Queen does the same thing so there's little argument over it.

Sometimes there is not a recognized son so the daughter is given to someone the king can see as the next king. Rarely the daughter took up the crown after the king instead of her husband. There is only one Virgin Queen, and she was not, everyone knew but she was never officially married so she was officially a virgin.

This might work best with a brother or uncle of the king. That way, his marriage is important, but not as vital as the king's or heir apparent's. He has any number of suitors, but he knows they're all only interested in power. Perhaps you could make it an erotic travelogue? He leaves the kingdom, and travels across the known world, trying to find the perfect woman.

I immediately got the image of "Coming to America" where the prince is let loose by his parents to "sow his royal oats" and actually does...

I read the tread title and thought of the theme park for some reason.

kings have absolute power. itd make for cliched romance novel fodder but i dont see any supreme ruler having an epiphany that causes them to think they dont deserve their position.

at any rate, nero was fond of masquerading as a commoner and visiting whorehouses.

i could sooner see one trying to earn the affections of his own wife. maybe both of them get really heavily into roleplay or something...you act like a whore, ill act like a fieldhand.

Recently thereis a tv show, the white queen, which takes place during the war of the roses. The king married a commener who he falls in love with. He isn't married yet because he is in some was a usper to the throne with half the country supporting his claim against the current king. She had lost her husband who went to war against the king she ends up marrying.
