not Masterbating...Did that catch your eye? Gooooooooooood. Listen up now!
....figured the How To...was the best place to put the thread.

SPELLING IS FUNDAMENTAL!

Making this thread a sticky wouldn't be enough, it should be carved in stone somewhere.

Definitely.
A lot. (Two words!)
Voluptuous.
Dominant is an adjective.
Dominate is a verb.

Stumbling over an incorrectly spelled word in a story is like having his dick slip all the way out and get rammed back onto your taint. You recover, but damn it sucked for a minute.

And when it happens every other thread......dat's alotta minutes! :)

I see definate and definately a lot from people who seem to be good spellers otherwise.

It's DEFINITE or DEFINITELY people. Sheesh!

a pet peeve: Yes, I know you've seen "orientated" used, but it's only become acceptable because so many use it.

"Oriented" is the word folks. Learn it, and use it.

Sometimes I wonder if it's some kind of code....as you say, many otherwise good spellers are all making the same "mistake"...so I wonder if it's like, you know...blue is for the Crips and red is for the Bloods. Some kinda code for those in some kinda secret society.....hee hee heeeee...:D :D :D...

And then, of course, there's the your/you're, there/their/they're, to/too thing, not to mention anything involving apostrophe's (that was intentional, btw ;) )...

I know that's a grammar (or grammer to some people  ) thing, rather than spelling, but it still annoys me.

I frequently fall into the their/there trap. My MIND knows better but my typing seems to take on a life of it's own! My dumb fingers move faster than my brain sometimes and their it goes again...

See??? :D

Are you sure? I thought 'definate' meant 'to define,' and 'definately' meant 'to define in an ornate manner.' Or was it that 'definate' meant to defacate, but with urine? Now I'm really confuzed. ('Confuzed' is a state of confusion caused by drinking too much Uzo, which can cause as person to definate in the middle of the street.)

I just want to say, its not that easy for everyone, just because some people are brilliant spellers it doesn’t mean everyone else is, I am dyslexic and it isn’t easy for me, I just want to make it known that you cant take it for granted that people are being lazy or anything some people just don’t have the ability to spell brilliantly and people just need to understand that. :(

*Rant over*

More often it's laziness and/or illiteracy, not a reading disorder such as dyslexia. And in today's society with L337 speak (leet speak - exchanging numbers for letters) and text message truncation, it's gotten much worse. The word "ginormous" has now been added to the dictionary because people can't use the right words "giant", "gigantic" or "enormous". I once knew a person who used the term "rememberize" all the time. Writers don't have an excuse, there are too many tools available to catch spelling errors. On forums where the format is less formal, spelling isn't as big an issue, though it's still a bit annoying.

I totally understand where your coming from, I just wanted to make the point that sometimes it is because of a reading disorder, and yes there is a lot of spelling tools out there, which are good, but also when using these its not always easy to get the right word, especially for me, hence I still makes mistakes,

With all the text language going around now it can get too out of hand, and I totally get your points, and agree I just want people to know about and understand dyslexia a bit more, and not judge people for it, (which I have had all my life)

I understand as well that not all can spell/write out words for the reasons _amy_ points out and I sure am sorry if I've offended people who struggle with dyslexia and so on.

But at lit I tend to agree...it's either laziness with some of these misspelled words used over and over by many or it's some sort of "trendy" thing they think is "cute" or something....or their own Da Vinci code...:D Trouble is..makes them and the Board look stupid sometimes. When I see blatant or multi-misspellings in a title to a thread...my mind shuts down on that thread as I figure the thread-starter was not caring or it is a garbage thread.

I'm just telling what my reaction is...I don't think I'm the only one who has negative responses to such things. Whether it means anything to other people here is another story! LOLOL! But for those who want their words READ by as many people as they can reach, it's something to consider before clicking on "Submit".

Ditto! and I apologize if my posting seemed otherwise.

Being a writer myself, correct spelling and word use is important, and for that I have a host of spell checking devices. Even in informal settings such as forums, I've got an auto-spell check on my browser that flags boo-boo's. On occasion a word or misuse will slip (most notably "on" instead of "one" - goes back to the hands are faster than the brain comment from earlier! ) and it depends on my mood and importance whether or not I edit the posting.

There are occasions where malaprops and misspellings are appropriate, but those are generally obvious when they occur.

Also not all here have english as their first language. Or am I only one...?

There was a time I did copypaste all I wrote on forums etc into word first to check my spelling/grammar, in fear of making a fool out of my self as I knew I do a lot of spelling mistakes and odd grammar. *hugs to all dyslexic*

On a forum/messageboard/chatroom I no longer care much how I or others write, and do not mind getting corrected by others either, so I just write what pops into my head.

However, in a written novel or the like I would do my uttermost to spot any errors if I where to ever publish anything. And beeing me I think i would have someone more lingual to look over it.

Languages and the way they are written changes all the time, it's rather interesting how slang become the new right way to spell something.

I'll get back to my books now hehe. :nana:

Use Firefox instead of IE. It has a spellchecker built right in.
