A promise made, is a promise kept...
When I commit to something, I place my personal honor on the altar with that promise. In the past, I have not broken that commitment, my spouses did.
If I make a pledge, oath, or promise, I will fulfill it for my honor's sake.
I don't think it's sacred for it's recognition by organized religion/society, it's sacred to me for the above reasons.
