Mama Blu's

Gelatinous fish I think...never have been able to figure it out.

Lutefisk (Norwegian) or Lutfisk (Swedish) or Ludfisk (Danish) (pronounced [lʉːtfesk] in Northern and Central Norway, [lʉːtəfɪsk] in Southern Norway, [lʉːtfɪsk] in Sweden, in Denmark [luð̞ˠfesk] and in Finland (Finnish: lipeäkala)) is a traditional dish of the Nordic countries. It is made from aged stockfish (air-dried whitefish) or dried/salted whitefish (klippfisk) and lye (lut). It is gelatinous in texture, and has an extremely strong, pungent odor. Its name literally means "lye fish."

Oh... *hjirk hjirk*

Oh... *hjirk hjirk*

It is pure nastiness. There are tons of Norwegians around here...they eat it a lot. They even have special dinners around it.

Blech.

I don't even know what that is but even I would say 'no'.

Basically, a dried whitefish, like cod, that is first rehydrated by soaking in water, then partially 'chemically cooked' by soaking it in a lye solution for several days, after which is is soaked in more water for several days (to reduce the caustic pH levels of the lye), then finally baked.

Yeah, ew.

It's as nasty as "100 year eggs" from Chinese cuisine.

I just want to know who the fuck first thought of this? Who looked at a fish and said 'I think I am tired of plain baked fish. I know! Where's the lye?"

Pro'lly the same person who looked at a bucket of spoiled, moldy milk and thought it would go well will spoiled grape juice.

Live Sugar Ants
Live Witchedy Grubs, or baked if your a wimp.

Then there's my Scottish heritage.

Blood Pudding
And my favorite Tripe

Jesus! What the hell are you guys eating? [laughs]

Actually I think this might be a great cover charge for the day.

What is the grossest, most disgusting thing you have ever eaten?

Easy, right?

Blu

Wow that is going to be hard for me. I used to be a Chef so I have tasted (and cooked) some pretty weird things.

Just about every type of offal you can think of.
Most forms of bird (from quail up to turkey and emu)
Reptiles (Snakes, lizards, crocs)
I have even had to eat bugs (they were bad some of them, but some not so bad) We are talking Crickets, Scorpions, Ants, Giant Cockroaches and the like.

I would say those were the worst.

I think it was a preservation thing...still I don't ever plan to touch the stuff. It's right up there with the rotten shark meat that some people eat in Iceland though I think that's to get some sort of toxin out.

Hmmm scrapple seems to bother people, done right I think it's delicious. Also had octopus, kind of chewy but good.

Scrapple is pretty friggin' nasty. If scrapple had aspirations of improving it's standing, reaching the level of Spam would be considered an unobtainable goal.

lima beans

Oh lima beans are good if they are drenched in chow chow. ;)

Yeah I am thinking you win for those! Blech. *shudder*

I think I have tried scrapple. It wasn't horrible but I had no desire to repeat the experience.

You know I don't think I have ever tried Spam. Probably doesn't help that whenever I think of it I start hearing Monty Python. [laughs]

Spam spam spam spam spam spam spam spam....
