elected officials of small town, Mason TN, still home to descendants of freed slaves, have been working hard to address financial issues from former administrations. Now, with Ford planning a huge investment ($5.6 B) just 4 miles away, which would have seen enormous financial benefit in the form of tax and development revenues for Mason given its road and rail status, White republican state comptroller mumpower has stepped in to strip their power away.

Mumpower’s power grab comes after he’d given Mason’s government a choice between relinquishing its charter–essentially giving away control of the town to Tipton County–or having him step in and assume control of the municipality’s budget and spending powers. According to Tennessee Lookout, a local government watchdog website, Mumpower says the move was necessary to address financial mismanagement in Mason.
