Uhh, no. Once he was arrested, the police could search the immediate area, his person, and his belongings for evidence or dangerous weapons he may have tried to secrete or hide.

It's called a search incident to arrest and is a valid exception to the warrant requirement IF the search is conducted as part of the arrest sequence without any period of delay.
