Lost draft

I wrote about 5000 words of a story entitled "Changing Times* over several sessions, saved the draft, (I thought) and when I tried to continue this morning I couldn't find it.

My control panel says that I have no drafts.

Is this a common problem? Is it safe to write stories on the platform or do I have to use another program?

I am sorry you lost part of the story - that is rough.

I agree that writing elsewhere (Google Docs is my go-to as well) and copying it over when you're done is a good approach.

Frankly, I wouldn't trust any online platform to maintain a draft. I've never heard of anyone losing one here, but I'm hardly surprised.

You can write on Lit, but you give up a lot by doing so. Use a word processor and you'll get a lot of tools you might not think you need, but will find a use for as you keep writing. I use MS Word, but I've also used OpenOffice Writer. It's a clone of Word, can read Word documents and save documents as Word documents, and it's free. It also comes with clones of MS Excel and PowerPoint.

I don't understand how people can put in all that effort to write something and then not save their own copy or back it up periodically.

I think it's probably still hanging around out there somewhere but I can't find it.

I started another draft and logged out/back in, and found that after a few tries.

I think I'll take the advice given here and use another program for editing. I have used Lit in the past but there have been changes and I have forgotten things.

I don't remember that it was this complicated before.

Anyway, thanks for the advice, everyone.

Why would you not use an actual word processor? Just because a site(and Lit is one of a few) will save what you wrote, doesn't make it a viable cloud storage. That's not why it does it, it's purely for security.

I write all my stories in Markdown, then convert them to DOCX for editors and HTML for publishing. I even have a template for rendering to HTML so that it looks exactly like it will on the site. Helps me estimate the number of pages it will be.
I recommend SimpleNote and StackEdit. Both have cloud sync, and the former has a mobile app while the later is a PWA that can be installed on a mobile device. Helps for writing when riding the bus or transit.

I'm wondering if there might be a glitch in the matrix. I just submitted a story and despite the dialog saying it had gone through, it does not appear in either my drafts or my pending list, even after waiting a while in the hopes that it was just an update delay (and that's never been more than minutes before). Curiouser and curiouser.

Combination of Google Docs and Word works for me then copy and paste into Lit once ready to submit.

I use Word, but make sure you save to Drive or something similar. I had 6-8 part stories saved to device which then died on me.

Let us know status in 24 hours - I hope it's just a timing glitch.

I re-submitted it a little later with a note about the possible duplication, and that one went through without any apparent problems. The phantom copy has not resurfaced so far, at least not on my end. Given that the system didn't protest my second attempt for having the same name, I'm reasonably confident that the first attempt never completed its journey to their inbox, although I've no idea why.

Use Google docs
Agree, Google Docs is great. But make sure to download your stuff in word format and upload it somewhere else occasionally, plus maybe keep it on a USB drive.

The rule I try to adhere to, which is also one of the IT industry standards:
Four copies
Three locations (can include different cloud providers)
Two networks (mine or someone else’s)

So, a copy on Google Docs for writing and as the primary site. A copy downloaded to my computer. Another saved to a USB stick. And a fourth up on Dropbox.

Of course, once it’s up on Lit, you have a fourth (or fifth, for me) copy there, too.

I think if Google and Literotica both cease to exist on the same day, we've probably got bigger problems than losing our smut.

I wouldn't mind Google going away, as long as something better bought youtube and Google drive, that wasn't as nosey.
