How many greeks do you see overweight? Quite a lot

when i was in Greece
people would invite us over to their homes late at night around 10pm
and then we would have a huge meal.

i think it's those heavy late night meals
they would stay up till 2 in the morning
eating and drinking

If you plan on remaining on that diet forever.....

I had a doc get very upset with me about tring that diet.

Most people overweight are at a higher risk of heart problems andsuch anyway...

Why not have a high fat, high colesterol diet also?

Yep, that's the kicker--it's best if you have a doctor let you know after a physical if there are any hazards from trying Atkins or not--I know people who have started Atkins and months later had their chloresterol levels go down--but I don't know what their levels were to start with!;)

If you don't want to bother with fancy dietary restrictions, books, etc., knowledgeable people I talk to recommend at least the following:

1) Portion control (especially if you're an American)
2) Reduce your sugar intake (and there's processed sugar in EVERYTHING that's a manufactured food)...
3) Moderate on the carbs and on fat intake
4) Get off your duff and do some moderate aerobic (continuous-movement) exercise for at least 15 to 30 mins per day.

Now, if only I had the discipline to follow my own advice!

try a search on Yahoo or engine of choice for "three day diet, for masochist's only" you'll find your three day diet, if you can 't pm me and I'll send it to you.

Lots of interesting information so far on this thread. I agree with RH's general guidelines about 2 posts above this one.

In general, we eat way too much processed food. I look at my cart as I'm standing in the checkout line and weigh the packaged items versus the fresh fruit and veggies as a broad way to measure how much processed stuff I'm eating.

A small note about oil: we need a bit of it everyday. I tried a detoxification program in the fall and would forget to put the recommended tablespoon of olive oil into the pot of brown rice. I noticed that around 3 pm I would feel tired, just sapped of all energy, even though I'd had carbs for lunch. A book I was reading mentioned that without oil, our bodies can't metabolize the carbs as well! What a difference that tablespoon of oil makes!

The important thing is to know we can't eat everything and anything in huge portions. And to choose food based on what our bodies need and not what we think we want.

Thanks for starting the thread, KG. Hope you find ways that work for you long term!

MM, stepping off the soap box

edited to add that I've lost 20 pounds in the last 5 months because I've shifted my eating habits from processed to more fresh foods

my $0.02 worth

as someone who has now lost alot of weight in the last year, here is my recommendations.

exercise is important, not working out but just taking a hike once a day even if it is just once around the block. your body is not going to lose weight from doing what you normally do. you have to move a little extra.

diet, white meats, (red meat-preferrably venison or bison) once a week for women, because our iron needs are different than men. there is a school of thought that we can get all the iron that we need from green leafy veggies, but lettuce is not counted among those.

fresh veggies (except potato) and fresh fruit. my cholestrol level is now 90 and my blood pressure is about 76/54 on a regular basis. i do not have any signs or symptoms of heart disease and i do smoke, (yes, i know, another bad habit, but i have to have one to be human), wait does having sex count as a bad habit?

anyway, this is what has worked for me. if you want more details just pm me and i will give you the diet that i work from.

B/P varys from person to person. As a Paramedic it would worry me to see an initial pressure of 70 over 60 or so, But if the person is alert and aware of everything going on, my next question would be if they monitor there pressure and if so is this normal for them. I have worked with alot of military and seen pressures that were that low with resting heart rates of 40- 50. Then theres the other side of the spectrum (me) hi BP and hi HR.
As for diets, I am on a program called "Body for life". I highly recommend it. It is a twelve week prgram and teaches you how to eat, and work out. This is a good thing for me becouse I had no idea what to do in the gymn. I started out at 220 and after four weeks am down to 200lbs. My goal is 180 lbs. Here is a link http://www.bodyforlife.com/ The book is at Walmart for about $20 - 25. Diets do not work. You need to change lefstyles. Be healthy. (Did I just say that?!?!?!?!?!)
By the way. Good luck and best wishes.

Dean

PS.
As for the Atkins diet, I have a friend that swears by it, everytime he goes on it he loses 10-15 lbs. Problem is when he goes of it he gains 15 - 20 back

Hi everyone

i've increased my water intake, dropped cheese, anything fried from my diet. I've started eating breakfast which is a slice of whole wheat bread with peanut butter and with a cup of herbal tea. later i have a piece of fruit. lunch grilled fish or chicken with steamed brocolli and spinach salad.
dinner i have soup lots of it and fruit salad.

i've lost 2 lbs.

LOL--seems to be a common problem! I'm hoping to be the exception that proves the rule--but a lot of my friends have had the same experience...

Emerald Eyes, thank you for your concern but it has always been that low. just like my normal body temp is about 95 degrees. Doc says it comes from spending so much of my life in the ocean.

i grew up in Florida and was in the ocean when i wasn't sleepin or in school or at work. and then I got a job where i was in the ocean then too.

i am about the most normal, happy, and content person that you ever saw and in good health most of the time. but when i am not in good health is when i get an elevated B.P., a temp, and feel really like crap. i have fibromyalgia and it tends to disagree with all the meds for everything.

Emerald,
B/P's vary from person to person, Time, stress, food, health. Without actually being "Hands on" I could not even begin to try and say if someone was in good health or bad. I am just throwing out there that Low B/P is normal for some people.
People who are fit ussually have low pressures. I was assuming this person was fit. After re-reading the post to make sure I had not missed anything I read Natives last post. Seems she has seen the Dr at least a couple times in her life and that she has her head on straight. If this was someone that just called me and didn't have a history of low pressures you could bet your booty they would be hooked up with two large bore I.V's and possibly some meds. But that is a whole other matter.

On a completly seperate note. I am pleased to see that people still care enough about each other to post there concerns. I see to much bad, not enough good. Thanks for putting a little smile on my face today.:)

Best Advise I can give you is to stay away from Quick Fads, Use a Fresh Lemon squeezed on your salad instead of dressing, its actually quite good and well not bad for you, Be sure and get some calcium in your Diet, drink some Milk when your system feels your lacking calcium, it tell the brain STORE SOME FAT were going to strave!! So give some calcium and Good Luck there is a lot of good hints out there, ;)

Run.
Start slowly, and aim for length of time rather than speed or distance. i.e. a slow jog for 10 minutes is better than sprinting for one minute, if the goal is to lose weight.

I know that the Atkins diet is very controversial, and it's turned into a big money-maker, but I've been keeping to it for a few weeks and have lost close to 10 lbs. The dietary restrictions (drastic reductions in sugar and close to no carbs) can be really tough at first (gave up my morning bagel, and no fruit juices), but from talking to others, it seems to be a good way to lose a moderate amount of weight and keep it off so that your metabolism adjusts to a new pattern of nutrition.

Of course, upping your level of activity/exercise is the only sure way to keep your weight at a particular level--and also improves how your weight is distributed! I've lost 10 lbs, but until I started walking more, most of the remaining weight was still concentrated around my stomach!

Don't mean to burst your bubble (and congrats on losing the weight), but everyone I know that has done Atkins, has gained the weight back (and then some) as soon as they started to eat what wasn't on the diet....you have to stay on Atkins for the rest of your life in order to maintain what you've lost. I've known at least 15 people who've done Atkins and it has been the same story for each of them :(.

Weight Watchers is the best way to lose weight and keep it off....it is sensible eating......allows you to eat whatever you want. All it is, is moderation.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a former (never treated) anorexic? About 5 years ago..same height (4'11") I kept my weight at 85lbs. very very skinny. I wore a little girls size 14...at age 17. then I got pregnant...and went up to 150lbs. Now....my son is 4..and I weigh 172lbs. I am afraid to diet..afraid of going back into the binge-starve cycles. Any suggestions? I HATE the way I look...and would like to see a size 10 (i'm a size 18 right now) and like 135lbs.

Thanks

You and I have spoken before. I also am one who lost a large amount of weight.

This has me worried

76/54 is dangerously low.

My blood pressure is considered perfect by my doctor at 110/70

I think you need to tlak to your doc.

At that pressure, you could experience faiting and dizzy spells

EE,

It depends on the person. Some people have always had a low BP and/or pulse rate. For me 80/50 is a normal BP. All the women on my mother's side have very low BP's and we are just fine.

If you are normally 110/70 and then drop to 76/54 then that is a bit dangerous, but if you are always 76/54, then that is another story altogether.

Try Weight Watchers. If you don't like the idea of going to group meetings, you can join on line and if I'm not mistaken, they have group meetings on line...just go to http://www.weightwatchers.com.

i am really bad with what i eat so i started this thread,

You should look into Pilates. Pilates makes you feel strong and happy about your body! Try it when i first started my stomach (core) shrunk in 7 days. I dropped 2 clothes sizes in One month with no diet. Dennis Austin has a great book called Pilates for everybody. She has modified positions so anyone can start out and work into the positions.

Hey, I'm a weight loss/nutrition consultant and I can tell you that water weight is a big issue for a lot of people.
If you stop drinking everything but 8 glasses of water miniumn per day, and a cup and a half of non-fat milk that will help you shed pounds quickly because you will get rid of all the water you're retaining. I had my mom do that and she lost 15 lbs in one week in just water weight.
After that I recommend portion control, a meat serving should be no larger than a deck of cards, and try to fill up on salad but order the dressing on the side-low fat/fat free is preferable.
Eat 6 times per day: 3 portion controlled meals, and in between 3 small snacks like some fruit or a yogurt to cut down on cravings.
Also try to stay active, walk around while you talk on the phone, take the stairs, park farther away than you usually do, all will make a big difference in the long run.
I hope this helps, enjoy your cruise!!! :D

you are so right about the water retention
i sometimes spend alot of time commuting i don't drink as much water on those days because i will be in the car for an hour or more
the next day i am bloated

the portion control is a big issue for me
that is why i love fine dining
they give you"tiny" portions
but 5 or 6 courses

I think what had me worried is that it sounded in her post like she lost lot of weight......and her blood pressure lowwered to that level.

If she is healthy, and its been like that forever, then great.

If it was a sudden change or dropped drastically due to weight loss, then I would be extrememly worried

I totally agree, EE......

I've lost
2 pounds and some ounces

thus far i have lost 4lbs.
I've also started playing tennis once again!

thanks for all the support!

diet tips

Here's a tip I didn't see posted: don't pour your salad dressing on your salad. Get it on the side, and just dip your fork into it. That allows you some flavor with each bite, and not nearly the fat. Also, popcorn with a little salt and some splenda sprinkled on it is a great snack.
