According to legend (Swedish at least) the loon was created by the devil.
The devil was put out that God created everything and thus asked if he could get to create something.God said ok and the devil went to work.
That's why they have such an eerie call and the reason for them to have their legs so far back is that the loon started to fly away and the devil tossed thir legs after them so they got stuck towards the very end of the bird.
