NYT: Suuuuure doesn't look like the end of Roe impacted turnout

ED MORRISSEY Jun 29, 2022 9:31 AM ET

Will the end of Roe recast the elections in November? According to the New York Times, it might not have even made much of a difference in June. Despite polls over the weekend showing spikes of Democratic voter enthusiasm after the Supreme Court vacated Roe in their Dobbs decision on Friday, by Tuesday voter turnout looked “typically sluggish,” at least in the early going:

The Supreme Court decision ending the constitutional right to abortion was expected to motivate voters. Turnout in several states hosting primaries on Tuesday, however, appeared to be typically sluggish — at least so far. All of those states have various forms of early voting, meaning that many ballots may have been cast before the court struck down the landmark Roe v. Wade case on Friday.

True, but that misses an important point. Thanks to an unprecedented (and highly unethical) leak from the Supreme Court on May 3, voters have known or at least strongly suspected that a majority on the Supreme Court had decided to toss out Roe and hand abortion back to the states. Early voting may have started before that point in yesterday’s primaries, but perhaps only just. At the least, almost all of this voting period for yesterday’s primaries took place in the knowledge or at least strong suspicion that Roe was toast.

One race isn't a trend, but the special House election in NE-1 was a lot closer than anticipated.

I agree, it usually takes a while for change to roll through the country, but as we speak there seems to be on evidence of it. As I stated earlier in another thread, the concerns of the voting public are not going to be focused on abortion but on issues of high inflation, high gas and food prices, the demonstrated incompetence of the administration, the explosion of high crime and lack of safety in Democrat controlled big cities.

You just described the concerns of people who think like you, not of "the voting public" at large. As usual, you can't tell the difference.

It will be great when states totally ban abortions and throw those whores in jail, like your forefathers would have wanted.

Predicting in June what's going to impact going to the polls in November? It's marvelous how triggered (and empty) the board Trumpettes are in being creative with scare tactic attempts.

Those who feel something strongly tend to overestimate the number of people who feel the same way; they tend to underestimate the difficulty of converting others to their persuasion.

I'm old enough to remember a certain long-winded and braying thread about Arizona by someone and how it was going to vindicate the bonafides of a certain one-term loser.

"A week is a long time in Politics" JH Wilson. And he knew a thing or three about winning elections.

Yes. I was referring to people who vote not those like you who imagine their civic duty to do so. Look at the polls, they tell the story and the DNC knows it. They're already planning to dump Joe Biden. They are desperate to get out from beneath the failures he perpetrated upon the nation with their help. They are done.

That's not even articulate, Klanguide.

Yes, they show 60%+ of Americans did not want Roe overturned, among other things.

Even if it were that simple, that still wouldn't mean they'd want Trump back in charge. Or the folks who supported his attempted coup.

one common leap of logic, is assuming that people's widespread current dissatisfaction with Joe Biden automatically means that they will turn around and embrace Trump in his place.

This is a huge fallacy. If anything, most reasonable people, even most of Biden's most bitter detractors, acknowledge that Trump is way worse, and far more toxic to American Democracy, and in no way shape or form deserves to hold ANY public office in this country, ever again. What they wish for is a more competant, fair, and reasonable person in the white house- whether that is someone like Obama was, or like Romney could have been. (and DeSantis is horrible on many levels, if anything almost as bad as Trump.)

Precisely. A LOT of the disappointment with Biden is from the left, and the last thing we want is to hand the keys to the Republicans (to the extent they're not already in the driver's seat anyway).

Of course they are planning to dump Biden - probably Harris as well. But when is the Conservative side of politics going to wake up to the fact that it is in their interest to dump Trump and his cohort, into the deepest hole they can find. New blood and new policy development is needed on both sides of Politics.

yup, good analyses.

I --and I never used to like Dems-- am rolling my eyes at Reps's victory dance,
as if the World's disgust with Biden means that they finally admit to the Right's greatness..

On the other hand, I'm starting to suspect that some in this forum are starting to realize that they've become the World's paria following the abortion ban, and that their discourses re abortion are more defensive than offensive

Democrats have not been this angry since Abraham Lincoln freed their slaves.

The presidential election doesn’t matter. Harris is going to pick Biden in 2025, or she’s going to pick herself.

Because I am in the middle politically I notice that what each side criticizes in the other side is often true of their own side. The right denies scientific evidence for global warming. The left denies scientific evidence for the relationship between genes, intelligence, crime, and race. A difference is that the right does not try to suppress those who argue that man made global warming is a serious problem. The left does try to suppress those who argue that genes determine intelligence and heavily influence criminal and sexual behavior, and that racial differences in these characteristics are intrinsic.

Another difference is that Democrats are more likely to hate Trump than are Republicans likely to hate Biden.

Fair points.
