from any women out there who shave. I need some detailed advice on brand names of products used, how often you find it necessary, and any non-obvious how to's.

I have this Schick Silk Effects hand razor I use and it does a mediocre job.... Being a working single mom, I don't have tons of time to devote to this particular area of personal hygiene, but would like to be a smooth as possible....

(this is something I could never ask anybody face-to-face, ha!)

Magic!

Yes, Magic lotion is very good. When I use it , I need to do it only every few weeks, at the most.

You will want to be sure to do a spot test and use the product for sensitive skin. But, it is good stuff.

Do a search on lit for threads about Magic....

I had trouble finding it here, but you may find it near you. If it isn't in the hair removal section with Nair and all that, try the men's shaving products.

I shave every day, or every other day. I use a Schick Mach 3 razor. I have gone through alot of different kinds of razors, and hands DOWN this one is the best one. I use a gel type shaving cream, any brand, but always one specifically for sensitive skin. Soak in the tub for about 20 minutes, then shave. With the hair direction the first time, then against the grain of the hair the second time. Afterwards, and this is what keeps the bumps, razor burn, and ingrowns away for me, I rub in a nickel sized drop of Neosporin over everything I have shaved, including the insides of my thighs, which also seem to be extra sensitive to ingrowns. Hope this helps :)

When I shave, I used to grab hub's razor. He's even gotten me my own Gillette Mach 3 (love that razor). I've never had good results with women's razors.

Anelize: thanks for the neosporin advice. I think I'll have to use that now. (very sensivite skin too)

I guess I'm a bit different here as my Top keeps me shaved, and I normally don't do it myself. But, I do recommend something called BikiniZone to get rid of any little red bumps that appear only when it's been a couple days too long since the last shave.

MissTaken, I'm definitely going to have to look into that Magic lotion :)

i personally have super sensitive skin, i'm allergic to "cheap" metals, so using a regular razor down there is a nightmare that i refuse to go through. (i'll get a horrible rash that takes about a week to clear up)

About 3 years ago i picked up a woman's electric razor for $30.00. i have long ago thrown away the packaging, but i'm looking at it and it says it's a Phillips Shave & Care. i LOVE this thing! It works wonderfullly for me, no rash (from my allergy), no bumps or in-grown hairs and it leaves me feeling very smooth.

i usually shave every other day. on the second day, i still feel very smooth, but everyone's hair growth is different, mine is slower than most.

i would also like to share an experience i had with using delipotories (EX: Nair). i used Nair once to get rid of the hair down there and let me tell you... NEVER again! It was the worst sort of burning sensation I could have imagined on my genitals. i was misable! Has anyone else had this experience?

By the way, love the neosporen idea! i've never thought of that. Thanx!

oh yeah... been there, done that... for me, the first time i used it, no problem... the second time i used it, i didn't even finish putting it on it was burning soo bad... the redness lasted for about a week.

Right now I use an electric razor, which doesn't last as long as using a regular razor but you also don't get the bumps, ingrown hairs and itchies.

I've seen so much about the Magic stuff, I think I have to try it. Especially if it lasts longer than shaving. I did a search online for razorless beard remover and found tons of places that carry it, if anyone is interested.

You all are terrific...

thanks for taking the time to post replies- they were just the specifics I needed!

Would have to give an thumbs up to Gillette Mach 3 for the best razor to use. I have tried a few different ones, and found razors for men to work best, and the Gillette Mach 3 is the best for me. I do prefer not using a brand new one tho, I prefer for my hubby to use it a couple of times first.. I seem to come away with less nicks that way!

I don't use and shaving cream/gel, as I find most irritate me, so I just use lots of soap.

As for after care, I found that when I first started shaving, or if I left it for a week or two, I would get a bit agitated and found Vaseline to work well, or a moisturiser that has no perfume.
