I know it is possible to shop easily on the web (and to find listing of local shops) but I thought it might be a good idea to start a listing of all the truly GOOD places to shop in your area.
These places can only stay in business with our support.

If we get enough responces I will repost the list according to state.

*San Antonio, TX
Dark Fire
The physical store is located at 7126 Eckhert Road Suite #8.

1 1/2 Blocks WEST of Bandera Road, about 1 1/2 miles outside of Loop 410.
Dark Fire is open to the public on WEDNESDAY ONLY from 2PM to 7PM and YOU MUST BE AN ADULT to come in. No exceptions.
You can call to go at other times.

The store is owned and run by Princess Krista who is very active in the local scene I love her shop . It is small but packed tight with great things that I feel she sells at prices that are very reasonable. She will help you with anything you need.

*Houston, TX
Eros 1207
A boutique for leather, lace, video, and more. Includes a 1 hour photo lab. 1207 Spencer Highway
South Houston, TX 77587
Located within a few miles of Hobby Airport

This store has the best and most extensive collection of leather, lingerie, toys and books that I have seen in one place. It is staffed with a young sales staff that is very knowledgable and friendly. Plan to spend a few hours looking at everything.

*NYC
Purple Passion
211 West 20th Street Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday: Noon - 7pm
New York, NY 10011 Thursday, Friday: Noon - 9pm
Between 7th & 8th Avenues Saturday: Noon - 8pm / Sunday: Noon - 6pm
It appears they have moved from their old location on 14th street I haven't visited in a few years but compare all other stores to it. This little store had the best collection of paddles, floggers and collars that I've seen in one place.
The guy who runs it is very very helpful and will make you feel right at home.

Gee, I wish I had something really revelatory to add, but since I live in the Bible belt, all that I can add is:

Home Depot

I only know of one place in LA and I've never even been there, but there's a store called the Pleasure Chest on Melrose and Santa Monica.

For online shopping for fetish wear, especially shoes, and custom corsets, I highly recommend dragonswear.com. They have excellent prices, and a quick delivery time.

:) I can relate NemoAlia, I too live in the Bible Belt and it is not easy finding anything to do with sex let alone BDSM. I almost fell over when I found "Screw the Roses, Send Me the Thorns" at a Barnes and Noble here.

Las Vegas

There are a number of sex toy shops in Vegas, most of them carry a few BDSM items but, not much. We do have the only retail store for Paradise Electro Stimulations, very very cool stuff..if a bit pricey. Master and I are saving up.

Respectfully beany

edited...forgot to say, we're saving up for the Samurai

Home Depot, Wallyworld and the local hardware store are great but I was reallly hoping to learn of some new shops to explore.

Where do all of you {or ya'll for the Southerners here} shop??

Does everyone buy their toys online?

We also live in the Bible Belt, (and, I can think of a few uses for a bible and a belt!), and we've found with just a little creativity, you can acquire whatever you like, and often at a great price. For instance, every state has at least two big cities that allow adult video and novelty stores to operate. This is the only way to buy commercial vanilla sex toys, other than the net. These stores often sell a few restraints, and floggers, but the lack of quality is rivaled in infamy only by the astronomical price.

Then, there is the option of making your own. Just think of what you can do with a small plank of oak, a jig saw, and a peice of sandpaper. Do you have a sewing machine? Certainly, you can find a web site for BDSM do-it-yourselfers. Plus, Tandy Leather Products Outlets sell some fairly interesting kits that could be easily modified. (Since Tandy caters to the Scouts, I wouldn't advertise my intentions).

Do you know a welder? How about a carpenter? Do you have a metal shop or a wood shop? Oh, the furniture you could make!

A couple of businesses that many participants in alternative lifestyles often ignore, or simply don't know of are the equestrian stores and those retailers that cater to the law enforcement and security industries. These businesses are found in almost every medium sized city, and can be a boon for several reasons, not the least of which being cost considerations. I've seen much worse prices on ebay, and adult leather shops mark up several hundred percent sometimes.

Oh, let's not forget ebay. It is the internet, but there is some amazing stuff there. As a hint, don't limit an ebay search to just whips, floggers and other BDSM standbys. try other categories, like kitchen appliances, or home crafts. No telling what you may find.

Some of our favorite toys were found on leisurely browses around discount and hardware stores. As a couple of you already mentioned, Wal-mart and Home Depot can yeild up amazing results. Have you ever browsed a crafts store? And, let's not forget the big department stores, and the strip stores at the mall for the fashion conscious. The fall line is often a leather lover's dream. All you need is an imagination.

On occassion, medical supply stores can offer some interesting stuff, but they mostly tend to cater to the wholesale and medicare markets. Instead, try the local big chain drug store. Remember--Imagination!

Use you're creativity. Electrical supply houses sell black rubber insulating dip. Have you ever thought about rubberizing the ends of your plastic clothes pins? How about a rubbrized cheap wooden paddle....Ouch!

For electric play, I'm afraid the net and the BDSM retailers are your only choice. And, take it from an old time electrician and industrial troubleshooter, electrical play toys are NEVER home projects, unless you have the appropriate medical and technical background.

Additionally, if you check with the local lingerie store, you'd probably be pleasantly surprised about how much, and what they would be willing to discreetly order for you.

Finally, there are private BDSM clubs throughout the country - Even in the Bible Belt. Check out your nearest club or group. Join the BDSM community. They have lots to share, and even conduct various types of auctions to raise money for operating costs.

As far as South Louisiana goes, our favorite lifestyle stores are in the French Quarter - 'Gargoyles' on Decatur St., (near the French Market), for clothing, and 'Second Skin' right around the corner for play things. There are other places on Bourbon, but they're even pricier, but they do carry lines such as 'Xtacy'.

Anyhow, creativity, imagination, and a strong desire to play can net many a wonderful and inexpensive find.....happy shopping!

And play safe...

This Southerner is lucky enough to live close to New Orleans! Other than that its mail-order for me.

H piltdown thanks for the suggestions. I've made a variety of toys myself including spreader bars, floggers, leather slappers, nipple clamps {tool dip and sewing clamps are great}and paddles. My favorite paddle is a mesquite spoon.
I just enjoy shopping for new toys that I can use immediately That instant gratification thing, ya know?

I have to agree with Nemo on Home Depot. I tend to frequent Ace Hardware myself (helpful hardware folks!), and i get remarkably non-industrial toys there, as well as your typical fittings, fasteners and restraints. They have a lot of soft, fun things for play, if you know where to look.

I have heard there are some great stores in the LA/Orange County area. If you are interested I will find out for you. I am sort of new to the Southern Cal scene. I know a lot lot more about the Bay Area scene. Unfortunately where I live in So Cal there are no good shops that aren't a bit of a drive, but there are some great dungeons and groups.

All my ready made toys have been bought online. There aren't even any porn video rentals in the area I live in, much less adult toy stores. So I have to improvise or purchase online.

The creative mind can get around the prudish mind when need be.

I am sure that this might not be the right thread to share this link but it kind of fits and some of us who are resourceful might appreciate it. For those of you who consider Home Depot and Walmart to be fetish stores this might be right up your alley. The list gives every type of store and what you can buy there. I rather in joy it. By the way in the local scene we tend to refer to Home Depot as Dom Depot. http://www.sexuality.org/l/bdsm/creatoy.html
