Happy Thursday everyone.

Often times on my way here I pause in the Personals section and see what's being posted. I'm curious as to their effectiveness. Are they like mass mailing PMs, where its a pure numbers game? Do they attract trolls? Are they trolls in disguise? Are they men pretending to be women? Why are they so often fairly knew members with fairly low post counts?

So many questions....

When I first got here, I posted down there. I had no problem with trolls or men posing as women.

I think it depends on the post down there (these are not from personal experience):

1. 18, female and horny = 45, male in mother's basement and horny/lonely
2. Wants to watch you jerk off on cam but doesn't have cam herself = has cam but is a dude
3. Anyone who refers to herself as a MILF or cougar = 18, male and horny
4. 40, male and wants to chat with a nice girl = 45, male and wants to see your tits
5. Australian, female and claims she posted down there by accident = horny, Australian female looking for sex talk about foot fetishes and Katy Perry

My personal is AWESOME....BTW...
I tend to no longer get trolls...
Can't imagine why?? :rolleyes::D
Could be, I've been around long enough to give off an aura of "please, don't piss me off"

I think if the personal is well-written, clear about what you're seeking, AND you're willing to put up with a few fucktards in the weed-out, you can get good results.

That said, yes, there is a disproportionate number of 18-year old, horny, cock-hungry, bisexual, cum-sluts posting in the personals.

Who'd have thought these poor souls would not be able to get laid outside of an online environment. Such a shame..

I read the personals sometimes just to get a glimpse of humanity. It's amusing to see the blatant honesty some will use, puts a smile on my face when people are clever about it, and actually refreshing to see someone sincere.. (however, after reading what pmann has to say... )

every now and then I feel a little snarky comment brewing in my head when I read something about some "lonely single just looking to meet a nice friend." Part of me wants to challenge the very nature of the request..
but hell.. I'm here.. we can't all be old male perverts sitting in grandmas basement.

Speak for yourself, lady.

I don't go through the personals, but I imagine it's just a place for others to try to reach out and get their rocks off. I don't see the harm in it. If Frankencock47/m/44 meets BigBoobsMcGee/f/47 online, but they're really Timothy/m/19 and JimBob/m/63, who the hell cares? Do they secretly know that about eachother? Do they even care? I don't think it matters. No one's getting hurt. I think most of the personals are probably like that where someone comes in, gets their jollies, and doesn't come back until they want to again. Frankencock may even choose a new nickname to hide from BigBoobsMcGee. Whatever. No one's getting hurt.

I think the personals section has potential to be a good community, but it's just not set up to be and it never will be. Anyone can create a multitude of accounts, anyone can post, and age and gender are basically left up to the honor system. While these are all good things on one aspect because it allows different types of users their freedom, it disallows an environment where intimacy can be a little more useful. You're going to get single minded trolls that PM photoshopped pics of some porn star's cock, and you will get men using AVs of some tumblr tits. The whole formula just makes the personals section messy.

Now Chained brought up a good point. Is it a numbers game? Hell yeah, it is. If TitanicTitsOfEternalFlotation doesn't get a PM, will he-she come back as IcebergBallsOfDoom? They might and maybe that'll work. If A doesn't work, try B. It's a method that works for the users of the current system. That's why I think there are so many "new" users. Also, I think a lot of people come in to try out of curiosity and it's just not their cup of tea. That works for them too.

Now for people actually reaching out for some value in the personals and a real connection, that's sort of tough. It's worth a shot. You don't know if you don't try, right? Whatever you want out of something, it's only worth as much as you put into it. If you come in every day, are honest in reaching out to meet someone and connect for fulfillment, make a real effort to nurture your thread, converse with people and have a fair amount of mental fortitude to make good decisions, it might pay off. You might find the needle in the haystack. I'm sure it's crazy difficult, but it might work.

Things I’ve learned about personals from lurking on the board.

~ assume all women are actually men posting as women.
~ if you are a women, expect to have to prove it.
~ assume all men are some kind of predator.

Is the above true? No idea, just what I hear.

I peruse the personals from time to time, some make me cringe, others are impressive in their sincerity and wit. Some I’ll even bump one or reply on the board, just ‘cause they made me smile. :) I’ve even been tempted to reply to one or two privately, but I don’t.

Once upon a time I even considered posting an ad. But…the whole thing just seemed too problematic. Aside from not being quite sure what to post, I’m crazy enough myself that having to wade through other crazies just somehow lacks appeal. :D

I think the reason it’s mostly new members that post is because they haven’t been on the board long enough to realize how poorly the system works.

But…in spite of the difficulties, people do seem to occasionally find good matches using the personals. So, if you’re willing to take the time and wade through the muck, maybe it’s worth it.

I've replied to one or two of the witty personals but they tend to fizzle out after a couple of dull PMs. Most of the posters seem like drifters, who never follow up or are too lazy to get to know people on a thread. Besides, what is the point? The chances of meeting someone are one in a million - like the lottery.
The people that worry me are the ones who stay at home, posting in Personals here and elsewhere, with no luck. If they finally manage to screw up courage to talk to someone in RL, it just comes out like "asdfghjkl-blurt" - either that or they'll just bury an axe in your head through frustration.

Yup - that's a good one. I especially liked the first comment from Lollygirl
"I Have admired you and your cleaver wit on many threads...."
Was that pun intended?! It made me laugh :)

If I wanted more traffics here I guess I would have went on a rant about what your AV is and the type of PMs you should expect. However that has been gladly covered elsewhere.

I actually think that was an interesting topic (aside from the anger on that particular thread), and one that could make good fodder for further discussion.

Why does everyone talk about other threads that I know nothing about ? :( is there a party some place else?

it probably wasn't necessary, I was mostly having flashbacks to the PDA heated discussion here and thinking aloud how happy I was that that emotion wasn't here. But, I do like it when people are passionate about anything. As long as it isn't intentional baiting, that kind of passion is what fuels us as humans.

In hindsight the PG crew is clearly not the audience for serious discussions.

I actually enjoy serious discussions sometimes. That's why I post in Litiquette. I wish there were more of these, actually. I just dislike negativity and hostility. I don't fear it, I just don't want to be a part of it.

Aside from this thread, I keep my serious discussions to The Darkroom. I just don't think this is the part of the forum for that type of discourse.

I think it was an interesting topic to discuss, the way it was brought up was interesting, and the fallout and flow-on even more interesting, like Chained's post for example. In hindsight the PG crew is clearly not the audience for serious discussions.

Believe what you want to believe.

I was just thinking this page doesn't have my boobs on it so I better post.

Well, that was a waste of time read. Would anyone like a nice cup of tea, it's freshly brewed

People read all sorts of emotions that aren't there. I can control the words I say , I can't control how anyone else reads it. I don't regret raising my voice in that thread, if people chose to read it as hostile and negative rather than just pointing out something that was wrong, so be it.

It's so interesting to me how that whole thing unfolded.

I wasn't saying you were negative or hostile or anyone specifically was negative or hostile. All I was pointing out was that the atmosphere of the thread became negative and hostile. That's what I don't like and that's all I'm saying. It's no reflection on other people, how they post, or what they say at all.

Serious, heated discussion is cool. Raising your voice is fine. The squeaky wheel gets the grease.

The discussion could have been a good one, but not everyone is able to take a step back, keep a cool head, and think through someone's words and then communicate well with their own. They get emotional, take things personally, and stuff gets cloudy. Then you find yourself in a situation completely off base from where you wanted to be. That's where the thread got to.

Maybe it's human response to stay on the defense under perceived personal attack? That's worth a thought or two, at least.
