I have always wondered about the color also. If it is supposed to be a secret or whisper then why not do it in a PM? It kinda irritates me when I see it. If people are gonna post in a thread why not post in colors that everyone can see and read?? If you want to pretend whisper at least do it in a different dark color so those on phones can see it too. Just my opinion.

Don't you know there is no such thing as invisible ink!?

I really hate that Lemon Chiffon color. What happened to good old white?
Me, too. That's why I usually use wheat.

Whispering sweet nothings to you.

I feel like there are responses to the men, maybe not an equal proportion to the women.

I've always thought it was used as a device and a way to tell someone something within at post, kinda like using invisible ink. I really like this thread but sometimes only the women get responses to their posts and that makes it feel clique-ish.

I respond to posts if I feel I have something to add or agree and not even always at that point either. lol ;)

And not using the original color made that look much harsher than it was intended. Not a shout, but definitely not a whisper. :D

Happy Scottish Independence Vote Day. If your a Scot, remember to vote. :)

Today's topic is part complaint, part curiousity. And some of the most loyal Litiquette-izans are guilty. And I expect a day full of responses that will contain nothing but what I'm about to bring up.

What's the deal with posting in a font color that's so light it's hard to read? I access Lit exclusively from my mobile device so maybe it's more pronounced but when posts are written in a super light font I don't always read them, as it's too much of an effort. I know there was a thread dedicated to write in white, I never read it.

I've always been of the opinion that if I have something to say I want everyone to easily read it...

I do it occasionally so it's like a whisper after posting something else. Lame, but true.

What Rainshine and BBB said. I also use it sometimes if I have been playing a game for a while and want to tell the people I have been playing with goodnight or goodbye or something like that.

Now, now everyone, let's not get snarky and sling arrows. Litiquette-ville is full of love, if not love then Lust. :)

I'm going to disagree again. According to Merriam-Webster's online dictionsry a clique is "a small group of people who spend time together and who are not friendly to other people" so your definition of a thread, esoecially this one, is wrong. I've always encouraged an open and friendly atmosphere here to encourage all to participate. While threads tend to attract people of a similar interest, they do not have to be a clique by definition. And while disagreements can and will happen, I'd like to think they can happen in an open and respectful manner so as to encourage continuation of the dialog.

I agree with Chained here -- and I don't feel encouraged to participate in clique-ish threads -- and have encountered several on Lit. I have been explicitly told I am not welcome on them a time or two. I believe folks can create cliques if they wish, they just end up boring and in-bred in my opinion.

As for the unreadable fonts -- I did not realize people were whispering or that it was a convention for signing off. But it isn't inclusive to do so knowing that many people's devices cannot read it. If you don't want to be inclusive, not sure why you would be posting on the public forum.

Allow me to rebut again.. With another definition of clique, provided by Wikipedia...

"In the social sciences, a clique (CanE, UK /ˈkliːk/ or US /ˈklɪk/) is a group of people who interact with each other more regularly and intensely than others in the same setting".[1] Interacting with cliques is part of normative social development regardless of gender, ethnicity, or popularity. Although cliques are most commonly studied during adolescence and middle childhood, they exist in all age groups."

Keep in mind, Chained, there are both connotational and denotational definitions of our vocabulary, neither is wrong, rather interpretation is determined by the user.

Did you just go into Wikipedia and write that yourself? ;) Wiki is like that, ya know:rolleyes:

I'm not sure that the word "clique" ever evoked a connotational response to me, I tend to be literal. But if if I were to think about it in a connotational manner it would evoke a negative, exclusive, elitist type feeling that I don't think this thread emanates. That's why it's a losing proposition to debate opinions, there's no right/wrong.

So, as let's stick with the denotational definition of the word it's more clear and less subjective. It also has the added value of supporting my position ;)

Playful, suggestive, a whisper.

I've always thought it was used as a device and a way to tell someone something within at post, kinda like using invisible ink. I really like this thread but sometimes only the women get responses to their posts and that makes it feel clique-ish.

Responding to BBB and his need for male companionship. :rose:

Yep, this works too. Again, part of the post, letting the word game or such continue but not attempting to derail or Hugh-jack it. Almost like you are trying to be considerate to another word game player and letting someone else take your place if just two people have been going back and forth.

I agree with Chained here -- and I don't feel encouraged to participate in clique-ish threads -- and have encountered several on Lit. I have been explicitly told I am not welcome on them a time or two.

I'm shocked there are those who would actually tell people off and explicitly ask them not post in a clearly public thread. That's unacceptable in my book. Does this happen more often than I realize? Is my ignorance bliss? Now my gentlemanly side is giving way to punch someone for doing something so arrogant and juvenile. Don't derail, maybe this is for Chained's suggestion box, but that's just wrong.

it's a device used to communicate to those of your friends you will know will take the time to read it. If you're not following someone then I don't think the poster expects you to read or respond.

Rubes - I'm going to call you out on this one. That's exactly the kind of behavior that creates cliques and drives people away. Why not communicate with everyone? Or use PMs to send a message. Cliques are the #1 reason, in my opinion, that make people not want to participate and what fun is Lit if we get all exclusive?

Good gravy - you mean I could have just been highlighting over those words to read them?!?!

*chuckles* Correct, but I might pick up archery because of you.;)

^^^ Example!
We are not a clique, it was not worth a PM, just a playful message to the wonderful GG that, if she cares to read it, she can. Does she have to see it? No. Do I want her to see it? Sure. Could I have put it in plain text? Yes. Perhaps it is more like a public whisper, directed at someone, but I don't care if others read it, a non-PM if you will. Do people feel left out, that we are part of a secret club or that she and I are an item? Perhaps they do but that was never the intent, I don't think so, and oh how I wish we were. *swoon* :rose:

Both sides make valid arguments, being involved with technology I can certainly understand the phone side of things. I can see how it might be annoying and I for one would never want to make others feel left out. This topic has opened my eyes a bit more to the public disdain of such antics. Thank you to those that have chimed in voicing concerns that honestly never crossed my mind, which does not make it right either. I will change font color less and, when I do, choose a more recognizable font color because of the exclusivity aspect; many of us are here because we are excluded in real life and I'm not one to condone that happening in an open forum.

There is nothing more hidden in this post as this is my playful, reverse psychology side messing with you at work here ... ;)

I'm with you about the mobile. I either have to highlight it or quote it so I can see what was said.

lmao... I'm sure you only read the KJV, too, forgetting thats it's a translation of a translation of .....*wait for it*...
the original.

That's alright. I'll agree to disagree, not to be confused with accepting or yielding in any way to your POV.
:p
