So it appears I may have to hire a security guard to keep the place in line when I'm not around to shepherd the flock. I know it's way more prevelant online than in real life, but doesn't the need to be policed to stay on task seem unattractive. Why is there a propensity for people to do whatever they want even though the final outcome will be less than what it could have been.

Not to say that I'm a martial law proponent, because we all know how well that works, but why do you like to stray off topic?

I don't purposely stray off...it just happens and is fun.

It's fun. It's a comic relief sometimes. Other times it fosters discussion and leads to a bigger topic.

I don't just do this online. Even in real life I can be talking about one thing and then throw in some random thought. It's not that I don't want to stay focused on a topic. It's that I usually have eighty million things in my head at once and sometimes thoughts just pop out.

I don't do it on purpose, it's just the flow of the conversation. I dislike being chastised because the fluidity stops that particular conversation, rather than it running its course, but understand why.

I could have ran with Aqua's briefs, since YOU had also poked reference, but shrugged it off.

Think of it this way, I finished the test, and I don't want to just put my pencil down and wait. Give me something to do or don't be surprised I'm drawing on the back of the paper..

Another way to look at it is to view your thread as a party. We come together and discuss/comment on your topic, then spilt off into the corner and converse about other things. This doesn't mean others can not continue to chime in on the topic.

Oh my gosh... the crayons to finger paints to not wanting to put my pencil down and wait. That was so me in school. I used to get notes sent home all the time in kindergarten because I didn't want to nap. I wish I could cash in on those naps now.

And there she was, lying on her tummy in front of the TV, happily sketching away.

Tangents and off topic don't bother me. I think it makes things interesting. That being said, I'm not usually the type to go off topic. Still, I don't think policing or security guards need to happen either.

I quite enjoy some of the tangents, off-topic comments and even some thread derailments. I only get twitchy when it becomes excessively self-indulgent (e.g two Litsters making out in mid-thread) or there's no sign of anyone trying to bring the thread back under control in due course.

Why does it happen? As others have said, it's down to human playfulness, lateral thinking and, in a few cases, unrestrained horniness.

I happen to think that Chained strikes a good balance in this thread of allowing a bit of banter to run its course, but then pulling things back into order before the thread becomes incomprehensible to visitors (who might otherwise be put off from contributing).

An excellent analogy, even the words forum and party not entirely dissimilar, both describing a group gathering with purpose. Buttercream cookies for you.

I concur. Aqua and Chained need a pin the post on a panty thread. I kid, of course, but when two people take up a full, off topic page, it's time to break out the crop.
