Benign Stalkers - I think these have to be dealt with on a case by case basis. Some are like puppy dogs that just want a little attention, and some are like cysts behind the eyes that while non-cancerous need to be removed before you go blind. I'm a big believer on guy instincts and letting that be your guide in addressing them. And sure, the removal of said benign stalker might be a little painful, but keep the long term in mind.

confession time--
I was in the marching band (if you dare tell ONE SOUL!! ) LOL
I remember hearing someone say that "these are the best years of your life" when I was in high school. I pity anyone that's really true for.

I was in marching band too. High school wasn't horrible for me, but it wasn't great either. My senior class wasn't extremely cliqueish like a lot of schools are. I had acquaintances in every social group because of the classes I took. As for lunch, it was open campus, so I never sat in the lunchroom.

Not at all. I've got self-restraint.

I'm curious. It's the scientist in me. I'm almost down to make a thread for it, if it wouldn't die.

*waving thought away*

At any rate. Litiquette question: What do you do when you have a benign stalker? One of those awkward folk that are always nice and pleasant, but always just a little bit off centre? Post-stalker, constant PM'er. How do you deal with that?

What's wrong with a straightforward approach here as well?

I went to a very small school. We had 24 in my graduating class and 4 of them were foreign exchange students. We weren't all best buddies, but we all got along. We didn't really have cliques.

I've never really put any stock in "fitting in". I butt in and you can take me or leave me. I don't really care. I'm comfortable in my own skin.

I'll admit, in HS I was a jock and in the smart classes which put me into some cliques by default. I tried really hard to make sure I had friends outside of the clique. HS was a ton of fun for me but it was no where the best part of my life. I got lucky, I know it, but I also know that if the best time in my life is behind me, hope has slipped through my fingers.

I wasn't a jock, obviously, but I was in the AP classes. I also took computer networking. I didn't have a lot of people I'd call friends, but I did have a lot of acquaintances that I could carry on a conversation with. Being in band, working, and having a serious boyfriend left me little time for socialization. It was probably better that way anyway.

I'm 29. I know the best years of my life are yet to come.

If our best years are in front if us, we're doing something right ;)

Good morning all!
May I pose a Lititquette question of my own or, since this one is unresolved enter one to be added to the agenda?
I've never been sure about AV's--specifically the changing of them.
There seem to be 4 different schools of thought:
1. Changing often with no apparent rhyme or reason, just pick things they like
2. Changing often but following a theme
3. Picking one image early on and staying with it for continuity
4. Those who choose no image at all

What I'd like to know is which is most favored? I like being able to recognize someone on the page instantly by their AV but I also enjoy the creativity of the people who change it up.
Also, if a person is changing it up, what is the acceptable waiting period for using an image that another poster has already used?

New topics are always welcomed, thanks for your submittal. I agree, I like AVs that stay the same and allow me to recognize someone a bit easier. My thought on it is to keep the AV the same and if you want to change things up, change your profile picture. I know many stop looking at profiles of someone they know which lessens the value but that would still be my recommendation.

I think somewhere between options 2 and 3 are probably the best.

I have Av's disabled, for several reasons. One, it's rather distracting. Two, I try to avoid visual impressions. It's amazing the opinions you don't form about someone when you can't see them. And three, lots of people like to change their Av without any apparent reasoning behind it. Only that last point is entirely relevant, so we'll go with that.

It's not necessarily a bad thing to change your Av. Creativity and fun is always nice. If you're feeling in a particular mood, you might change your Av to reflect that. But if your mood changes from hour to hour and day to day, well... things can change with dizzying quickness. I think perhaps it's better to change less often than often, and to stick with one particular theme rather than just throwing random images up on the boards.

And as CU mentioned, you can always change your profile pic for variation. It lessens confusion and still allows you a lot of freedom to express yourself.

Personally, I've kept the same AV since I originally picked it. Changed it just a couple of times but never for long. I've gotten kind of attached. Off and on I've wondered if people thought I was boring because of it.
My solution has been the picture in my sig--I keep changing that for the season for the holiday or just my mood.
There are a couple of--I hate to call them recycled--AV's on the board now that belonged to other posters last year. It was probably only my break but that caused me some confusion.
Is there an unwritten rule about using pics that have already been used?
Has the board ever unofficially 'retired' one?

I was a cheerleader, but I hung out with any and everyone.
My school was very cliquish, but not me.

Omggggg I'm wayyyy too nosey to switch av's off ahaha!!

I like to change mine every now and again!

Or turn off your PMs ;)

Ha! Turning PMs off only lets me not receive but I still see you. :D

Change your Av, and often. I get bored with mine, so I'm probably going to get bored of yours too.

I rarely open a profile so I wouldn't be looking in there. And changing Avs tells me one more thing about you.

I don't change my AV often, but it usually has something to do with my mouth....blah, blah, blah, blah, blah......:D

Does the ignore function stop someone from stalking? According to the FAQs the ignore function is as follows: "Ignore lists are used for those people whose messages you wish not to read. By adding someone to your ignore list, those messages posted by these individuals will be hidden when you read a thread."

It does not refer to that person being able to see what you post.

Also, typically women receive most of the unsolicited PMs and one would think are most likely to be post stalked. I could be wrong. In this case however, the question is posed by a male. Most men here would probably "like" to have his problem, if only temporarily. I see complaints all the time from men never getting PMs.
