We also tell them to pick up everything they see - especially the pretty breakable things.

That's my favourite thing. We have guitars and pianos and cellos and bagpipes set up through the house. It's like torture for children to come over because they can't touch anything. And when they do, I spray them with a water bottle.

Okay, the last sentence isn't true. But I have been known to play fetch with my nephew.

I don't talk politics in here, save that for the GB, but today is the last full day of 44's time on Pennsylvania Ave. Tomorrow the peaceful transition occurs and then it's 45's time to lead. How are you feeling about this? Ambivalent? Sad? Hopeful?

Children love pianos, don't they? I have a piano. Usually it goes like this:

Child: Can I play the piano?

Me (in my head): Well, I don't know, surely you must know whether you can play the piano? Have you had lessons? Oh, wait, you mean 'may I play your piano?'. In which case my answer is this - if you can play the piano, you may play my piano, if you cannot play the piano then keep your talentless, sticky little fingers off it or I'll cut them off.

Me (out loud): No. It's broken. Or locked. Or something. What a shame.

Collected company: Phew

(And sorry, Chained, I see that you have posted a question, and I'm not even slightly thinking about children playing pianos as a displacement activity to distract me from ... what you asked... really I'm not  *runs away*)

I'm always hopeful.

At a deeper personal level, I don't think whose in charge makes all that much difference in my daily life. I am who I am and that doesn't change because of who sits in power in DC. My values and my commitment to them remain constant.

I'm not a doomsayer. I think there is an irrational fear about what a president can and can't do. Obama is pretty far away from me in terms of many policies and my life isn't bad because of him. Trump is pretty far away from me in terms of loads of other policies and I don't think life will be bad in four years. People think the president truly has more power than he does.

I am hopeful that Trump will do the right thing. Maybe someone can take away his Twitter account. But like Paul said... it won't change our day to day lives too much, in my opinion. It's not as scary as people make it out to be.

They love pianos. And guitars. And anything that they can make sticky.

Do you have kids? Just curious.

I think the voters completely fucked up. I'm scared of where things are going. This isn't a left vs. right thing, either. Trump hasn't shown a single professional or personal trait to show that he's qualified for this job. A lot of the people that are saying "We need to support him and give him a chance" were the same ones saying "He's a Muslim socialist! Go back to Kenya, black Hitler!" 8 years ago. If you voted for Trump in the very least you overlooked his racism, rape allegations and ties to Russia. People's rights are in real danger but idiots just had to latch themselves to an unqualified bully because he "tells it like it is". Or worse, you're buying into the equally impotent myth that "Hillary is just as bad".

We are in for a very destructive 4 years. The wheels are already turning. Millions of people are about to get fucked out of their insurance. The best we can hope for is impeachment and for Pence to take over. And will that be much better?

Good news though, Trump lost the popular vote by about 3 million and only won due to an antiquated voting system that favored him. If we can manage to not get nuked before 2020 we might be able to fix some of the mess we're about to get into.

Sorry for the Olberman rant, but you asked. ;)

Peaceful. That's debatable. I suppose in the sense that civil war probably won't happen, but things are not at peace right now.

I'm numb. I'm not scared, more deeply disappointed in how ridiculous the shenanigans are. Disappointed at how much hatred is circulating. Disappointed by how self centered our incoming cabinet is.

But I do have hope. Hope that we will raise our voices and not tolerate hate. We will continue to build an inclusive society. That we will educate our young to be critical thinkers so that in time these destructive thought patterns will dissolve.

Very well said, Aussie. Thank you.

Well, to be fair, we are called the United States of America. Not the United Citezens of America. The voting system exists this way so that Los Angeles, New York City, Chicago, etc. don't determine the path for the country. I'm not saying it's right or wrong. But there are states like Alaska who have a small population that actually do a lot for our country in terms of resources and what have you.

The system didn't "favour" him. Apparently, he campaigned more effectively than his opponent. Those were the rules of the game when the candidates started. It's like one team complaining that they scored more points in the World Series, even though they lost more games.

With all of that said, I didn't vote for Trump (or Hillary). I actually do subscribe to the notion that they are both equally as... off, just in different ways. But yeah. The nation is rather divided. Politics are becoming more and more divisive and I think this is sad place for our country.

Beautifully said :rose:

And yes, there's definitely hope. There's more good guys than bad guys.

I will say this... I find this very interesting. I am not someone who normally talks politics. I don't care a whole lot because I think it's silly to argue. You never change anyone's mind. Ever. It just won't happen. And I line up with neither of the major political parties, so everyone hates my opinions.

But this is what I have found interesting. Two people have literally said to me that they will no longer be my friend because I didn't vote for Hillary. It wasn't like I was arguing with them. I was just asked. And I responded that I voted for a third party. I was told by two separate people that I am responsible for the destruction of this country and for the fiasco that occurred. These were good friends. Or so I thought.

Apparently tolerance is a one way street...

I'm just amazed anyone could ever dislike a person based on their political beliefs.

I suppose I should be grateful that the US election distracted everybody from the completely barmy decision my own country made. I suppose, too, that it's mostly none of my business. That said, I think we're all in for a rough ride. He is not fit for the position he will hold tomorrow.

Nor are his cabinet, from the confirmation proceedings. As a teacher, I'm afraid for education...

And everything else. Eh.

As a homeschooling parent, I have been afraid for education, too.

I voted third party, but I am glad that we will not have a run of the mill Washington politician in the White House, propped up by a party instead of his own convictions.

I hope, and pray, that he proves himself worthy. I hope when he does that people will forget the part they can't agree to back him on the things they can agree with. No man and no president will ever be 100% what you or I want. He's the president for all Americans... even if you don't like his hair, or his tasteless diatribes.

Let's not let things divide us and make it easier to be conquered by others. A house divided cannot stand.

As passionate (or annoying lol) as I can get sometimes I try to do my best to not slam down on individuals. My issues are with bad ideals and lack of thought in general. Like the point you made above, no one's mind has ever been changed by being shouted down. I have friends and family on all sides and life would be very miserable if I did nothing but shut people out because of politics.

This particular election has got people pumped up in general and emotions are high. People (like me, not sure if you noticed ;)) have strong opinions on Trump. It's good that some people have hope but what the fuck has Trump done to earn that hope? He was a nightmare of a man BEFORE he became president. So yeah, guess we'll see what happens.

Years ago, there was a escort at yahoo, who tried to hold sway over how everyone voted. She apparently thought herself so irreplaceable a commodity that she never considered anyone would say no to her demands. She was a democrat if that matters. And then some guy named Lwulf ambled up and spoke his opinion which was neither republican nor democrat.

He didn't deny her her choice but voiced that he had his own opinion that she would not sway.

She frothed a bit at the mouth, denounced him and said she would never meet with him again! (There was a first time???) Then, suddenly, an amazing thing happened. Guys who were being sycophantic because they wanted to get laid, suddenly spoke up for LWulf, saying "he didn't disrespect you, so why are you disrespecting him?"

Suddenly, many of her regulars said they were going to look elsewhere, because she was trying to control a political outcome without regard to others political beliefs.

It's everyone's business

The world is hurting. It sucks balls. We're better than this.

I honestly believe that Mr. Trump is more moderate than the true right-wingers would care to know. Some of his choices concern me (starting with Pence), but there is nothing that can be done at this point.

I'm saddened by the overall climate of the country right now. Many on both sides are behaving badly. And unfortunately, I don't see Mr. Trump bringing a steadying hand to any of that.

I think you two should kiss and make up. I'll watch. :D

In my own house of crazy, I'm just glad it's Friday. Who wants pizza?
