I'm curious about the impact of Christmas on non-Christians. I would love to hear your thoughts on the constant bombardment of the holiday and whether or not it impacts you.

I don't have any strong views. It seems like a good time to have a holiday because everything seems to close down then anyway. My pagan friends seem happy to celebrate it, too. :)
.

Our particular household was neutral on religion, but my surrounding family was quite religious. A split between pagan and Christian. While it made for a certain amount of acrimony, most of the pagans just rolled with Christmas, shifting the celebration to Winter Solstice. Each group had their own particular set of festivities, but everyone (or most) still gathered for the twenty-fifth.

My graduate studies brought me into contact with many non-Christian foreigners. Most of them seemed to view the day and surrounding hoopla as just one more in a long line of rather odd American traditions. All were very polite about the whole thing, though several were either confused or amused by the rampant commercialism.

Not what you were looking for I expect, but all I’ve got. ;)

Being Christian, the constant barrage of consumer driving advertisement is a little ick. We do our best to make it meaningful nonetheless.

Santa's is a little tired of me sitting on his lap anyway.

I consider myself to be agnostic, but I still love Christmas. Mainly for the traditions and time spent with family and friends. I also appreciate the sentiment of what it means to Christians. So, as a non-Christian-ish person - I'm still a fan of Christmas.

I live in a large college town and we have a fairly large population of people not born and raised in the U.S. who live here. The majority of those I know embrace and genuinely our holidays and the traditions surrounding them. Even if they are, as EN alluded to, somewhat baffled by them.

I'm basically the Pope of Pmanntown, so I am rather religious. I like most of what happens around Christmas. The commercialism is kind of annoying, but that's a general statement, just because I think people obsess about "things" too much sometimes.

I never get bent out of shape about the never ending complaints regarding people saying Happy Holidays instead of Merry Christmas or dealing with " the war on Christmas".

I just want people to enjoy it. And buy me gifts, motherfuckers. I wear a size 10.5 and I only like shoes made in USA, England or Italy. I'm picky. And apparently materialist. Buy me shit.

It's a holiday - what's not to like?! Obviously it has no religious significance for me, but I like some of the gentler aspects it brings to the fore. On the 25th almost everyone in our small village goes to the local pub at lunchtime (having first put the turkey/goose/whatever in the oven) for a couple of convivial pints - it's always good to see everyone there. To be honest religion almost never gets a mention - Europe is a pretty secular place, these days. Some people go to the 'Nine Lessons and Carols' service at the church, but even then many of them are there to enjoy singing.

Things I dislike? The rampant commercialism, the fact that it all now seems to last for six weeks, the repetitive loop of Christmas songs in the supermarket. Oh, and Brussels Sprouts, which my Mum likes to have with the turkey... I loathe them.

What is it you don't like about 'em? is it the texture, the flavor, or the smell?

The bitterness and the smell, mainly - I'm willing to acknowledge that somebody out there could cook them in a way which would ameliorate these factors, but frankly it's too late for me. They are known, in our household, as "The devil's testicles". :D

I feel like this is the question of someone who has never tasted a Brussels Sprout. Anyone who has ever eaten one of those little green devils should know that it's all of those things that make a BS horrific!

I figure they must be bad for you, as they try to warn you of their destructive nature with their bad taste.

Well, I can't say I've ever noticed any bitterness, but I'll acknowledge there is a certain pungentness to them, but almost any vegetable has an earthy pungentness to them...

Actually brussel sprouts along with turnips are highest on the list of anti-cancer foods (vitamin k). Additionally, sprouts are good for rebuilding your immune system as well as being good for the thyroid. They also have special cholesterol-lowering benefits.

so... "bad for you"? uh nope, I can't swallow that.

Cut in half, remove the tough outer leaves. Drizzle with olive oil, then plenty of salt and pepper. Chop up some garlic and toss together, then add some crumbled bacon, roast on a baking sheet. Not bitter, delicious.

Brussel sprouts are delicious!!!

I just love them steamed or boiled. No need to guild the lily for me.

edit: I ain't gonna say that doesn't sound tasty, but I have this whole "simple is better" movement going on. You can always slather something in cheese, (butter, etc) and make it taste "better," but I just like appreciating the food in it's simplest form.

Thank you. This is how I prepare them, sans the bacon. Last Christmas I converted several brussel sprouts haters to brussel sprout lovers.

This thread seems to have turned into recipe corner! Anyway, thanks but no thanks, there are plenty of other foods for me to enjoy... :D

I have been friendly with "the devil's testicles" recently and found them to be quite delightful. And tasty.

Darn. I came in to give my recipe too. :(

That's ok. This is how I feel about Lima beans.

No interest in getting friendly with "The devil's testicles", huh? :D

No - I'm not even devil's-testicle-curious... :D

I am entirely happy to take your word for this. :)

I don't think I've ever tried Lima beans - how do they taste? :rose:

Awful. I don't recommend them. Since we've already covered devils balls let's go with devils kidneys since they are sort of that shape. :D
