Yep. That's how he knew if the line was overloaded or not. He had this little device he could hook into the line and hear people.

It sure was...and in all kinds of weather, too. Now it's all digital switches and fiber optics. Back then all analog.

Back in the day there were party lines that you shared with people like your neighbors and operators would have to connect you to the other party. There really wasn't an expectation of privacy. Hard to imagine that.
