the stories need to reflect real life to be more interesting

I totally agree, all too often the situations just aren't plausible.

I agree in that the characters have to be real and their interaction plausible and interesting to make the story fun to read. The setting can be on some imaginary island where the whole population is born with multiple sex organs and blue skin, but if the people are intriguing, then it's much more enjoyable to read about them.

Bob Peale and Dixon Lee are great at developing characters without resorting long-winded, boring life histories. They let their actions show who they are. IndianAsian is also someone who can be relied upon for compelling men and women. I love Dirty Denise's submissions - the women in her "Naughty" series are intense, and I can't wait for her to submit more. JEdwin's stuff is very introspective, very character-based, and also very excellent.

I just read and edited a story by Bill Steveson entitled "Schoolgirl Crushed". Though it's one of the more harsh and grim of the stories we've received, the writing and characterization are very good and the pace of the story keeps you glued to your screen. I will be posting installments of that tonight.

And there are oh so many other authors that I've read and enjoyed, and I can't possibly mention them all right now. These are just a few that come to mind because I've been reading them recently.

I agree with you Laurel about Bill Stevenson (i think thats his name) and School Girl Crushed.......awsome story obviously done by an other awsome writer.....just waiting for the next installments if they are going to be any more

Part of the problem is with the limitations of the short story genre. Simply put, there is a limited amount of space/time to expand on the characters and situations, so almost by nessecity they are required to be characatures.

Too true, Angel Knight! Short stories are a special art form. Part of the challenge is that you don't have all the time in the world to describe your character. You have to really learn to pick your words.

I've noticed that the really good writers (the ones I think are really good anyway - that's all subjective, I know) tend to use the character's actions and reactions to establish his personality, rather than writing lengthy life histories. When they do give background information, it is brief and to the point, and pertinent to the storyline. Kurt Vonnegut, a favorite of mine since high school, once said that the secret to writing a good story was to remove anything that doesn't either advance the plot or establish character. Or something to that effect.

We've lately been blessed with an amazing number of high quality submissions by very talented authors. It's like Christmas every day around here - me at my computer popping open my little email packages! Sounds goofy as hell, but it's true.

Thanks Laurel!

I'm glad to see ya like my stuff. I know I'm a bit late on some of these posts... hadn't really ever dug into 'em until today...

I get some good feedback on the stories, and it's always nice to know that folks enjoy them.

So I'm thinking of writing something new, but I'm torn between writing another celeb story (which is always good because I get really passionate about the famous ladies sometimes <blush>), or if I should continue the 'naughty' stuff.

Hmm...

Any suggestions? =)

Kisses!

Write on what interests you most at the time, then the story will be passionate on more than one level.

E.A. Poe

Writing short stories is a real knack. Edgar Allan Poe wrote nothing but short stories and once commented that if a story had to be long then the writer was lacking in talent.

I don't completely agree...apples and oranges if you know what I mean...still a ring of truth about the ability to spin a yarn and not use the whole ball of twine.
