I was trying to find the What Do These Terms Mean thread but this one will do just as well.

I have a question about the term "glory hole." I know perfectly well what a glory hole is, but always had the impression that this meaning was American.

When I was living in Iran I had a friend from Yorkshire and one day I went to her house. It wasn't as tidy as it usually was, and I guess not tidy by her standards, because when I came in, she said, "Welcome to the glory hole." This was back in about 1973 or thereabouts.

Yet I was reading a story in the most recent batch of new stories that seemed to be set in the UK which specifically mentioned glory holes.

Did "glory hole" come to have the meaning in the UK that it has in America within the last 30 years? Or did my friend Muriel feel that her house was in such chaos that it compared to the sort of place where you could expect to find one?

I can understand now how the haphazardly placed sexual *odds and ends* in a receptacle can lend to the term "glory hole" ---specifically if certain physical quarters of stewards and stokers are enjoyed... But though the body parts exhibit a certain visual "glory" in the holes, I see no honor in worship taking place in a receptacle such as a public bathroom. Are there more respectable places where glory holes are found, other than toilets and cheap sex clubs?

(Anyone know if there ever existed a glory hole in a confessional?)
