To start things off here, WHAT AN OPENING CEREMONY!
I had tears in my eyes from the first, until it was over.......lots
of positive things, and surprises!

For the next 16 days.........let's keep this thread in operation...any
Olympic discussion right there...this is the place to be!!! :)

Top 5 "Spots" of the Opening Ceremony for me

In no particular order:

  1. Watching the honorguard bring in the WTC flag (and hearing the silent respect of the crowd).
  2. Watching the Olympic flag being walked in with celebs representing the continents.
  3. The overall beauty of the sequences: the coloring and music (when the sound system held up).
  4. Mike Eruzione calling over the rest of the 1980 USA hockey team.
  5. Prez George Dubya being handed a cell phone from a USA olympian (most likely to say HI to her folks!).
    [/list=1]

I enjoyed the opening ceremonies but I think the annoucers for nbc should have avoided speaking over the music. Sometimes pictures speak louder than words.

  1. That was real cool.....Dubya sitting among the US athletes, and being handed
    that cell phone! :)

oh yes....1980 team again......a "repeat" of history 22 years later so to
speak......very moving, and what a treat!

the sequences were really neat.......they took a tip from Disney's "Lion
King" on B-way and used the animal puppets operated by people......also
incorporating the American Indian aspect into the opening ceremony was
    real special.....

now for the flags....the WTC flag being carried in, everyone was so quiet!
Olympic flag....that was a treat to see John Glenn (he looks good for his
age!) and Steven Spielberg among those carrying it in.....

And the torch "trade-off" before it was handed over to Mike Eruzione.....
real awesome to see: Dick Button/Dorothy Hamill, Scott Hamilton/Peggy
Fleming, Bonnie Blair/Dan Jansen, Phil Mahre/Bill Johnson (skiing), Jim
Shea Sr./ Jim Shea Jr. (in honor of Jack Shea), and finally, Picabo Street/
Cammie Granato..........it was one surprise after another!

I agree.....but I think that's why they're called:
"commentators."

Just saw NBC Nightly News...

and just found out that last night's opening ceremonies
scored its highest ratings (on NBC) ever for an opening
ceremony telecast, whether it be winter or summer Games.
WOW!!!!!

that says something for sure!!!

Oh yeah...some early news...earlier today we got a
first medal...men's 5000m speedskating...a silver medal...
by Derek Parra (somethingorother?).......heard that he
wasn't even supposed to be in the top few, but he shattered
the world record, then 20 minutes later, a dutchman shattered
it.........wow.....surprises today!!

onward to tonite.......25 minutes away!!! (7:35pm EST
now)

Feb. 10....2nd full day competition!!!

Please don't let this thread die.......this is the place to be
to post and discuss all Olympic-related info, gossip, news,
etc........

other info you can find out here:
www.nbcolympics.com

early news......as of 5:45pm EST

got to watch some of the events on tv this afternoon;

all 3 American women made it into the snowboarding
halfpipe final, which will be seen tonite! I'm psyched
cuz Tricia Brynes is one of them and she's from New
Canaan, CT (not far from me)!

Todd Lodwick came in 7th overall in the Nordic Combined
event (ski jumping/15k x-country skiing), the highest finish
for an American in that event since 1932.

Gee do I feel like Bob Costas here? :D

later!

hiya Kayte!
no prob.....glad that you have checked out the thread :)

well.....the gold medal winner is Kelly Clark (from VT!)
in snowboarding halfpipe......awesome!! Only 18 yrs
old, no less! Was able to see her in action tonight in
the telecast........even got to see the medal ceremony :)

Ahhhhh more action tomorrow......Picabo Street in the
womens' downhill!! Will she strike it gold?

til tomorrow....

tigerjen

GO USA HOCKEY!!!

Hey Tigerjen, good thread,

I will probably not get to watch much until the hockey starts up, both men and women's. There are quite a few of my hometown Chicago Blackhawks playing in the olympics, and Cammie Granato from the women's team grew up one town over and my brother played hockey with her brother, Tony.
Keep people like me updated on medals, if you can....later....

Huzza

Why are all of these Olympian medalists White?

They don't get into universities for free even though they can barely get into High School

These Whites are talented where you aren't

Take your unearned Millions and go Fuck yourself

I think you better watch what you say.....how can they
help if they're white? remember that there are some from
different countries that don't even have snow or winter
stuff and are still competing......be happy that they are
there anyhow!!!

Wow....your brother played hockey with Cammi's
brother???? That's soooooo cool!!

FYI Women's hockey starts tomorrow (2/12)....and I
believe men's hockey started already, though the US
doesn't start play until this Friday.

Don't worry I'll keep ya updated here when I can.....its
going to be difficult when I go back into work tomorrow,
then i start the overnight shifts again late Wed..... :)

UPDATE: 4:30pm EST via NBCOLYMPICS.COM

Got some news from www.nbcolympics.com

1. Women's Downhill skiing postponed due to high winds
today.....most likely will be held tomorrow (2/12). So Picabo
gets to wait one more day!

2. When I checked the site, all 3 American men snowboarders
were holding the top 3 spots after the first run in the final event
in the halfpipe. We shall see later on tonight!

3. A surprise....in Curling (traditionally a Canadian sport, which
has been in the past 1 or 2 Games), US beat the pants of the
Swedes 10-5 in competition today.

4. Tonight could be history making in the pairs figure skating...
will the Canadian couple take home the gold and break the Russian streak that's been going on for the longest time?

5. OH yes....one more tidbit....Georg Hackl (Germany) who won
gold in the luge in '92, '94, and '98 Games, went home with silver
today in the final (an Italian won the gold today)....but Georg does make Olympic history of winning 5 medals in consecutive
Games. Way to go!

That's it for now.....au revoir! :)

UPDATE 5PM......MORE MEDALS!

All 3 Americans swept the men's snowboarding competition!
YEAH!!!!!!!!

And in terms of snowboarding lingo...."I'm stoked"! :D

Lets hope these are wonderful games for all.

**running off to the TV...almost 8pm EST!**

later, gang!

tigerjen

Checking in 2:20am EST........before bed.....

Got to see the final runs of the men's snowboarding
competition tonight, and all I have to say are those
CRAZY Americans flyin' and stylin' man!!!! They
certainly swept up those medals no problem ;)

I think the biggie tonight was the pairs figure skating
program.......got to see it, and my opinion is that
those friggin judges gave the gold to the Russian
pair instead of the Canadians........in honest truth,
I saw both pairs perform, and the Canadians did
so wonderfully......very clean.......the Russian pair
did well, but had a few "slips".........again, its the
subjectivity of those figure skating judges
I heard on the follow-up comments that the judges
most likely thought that the Russian pair did a bit more
"difficult and intrictate" creative-wise......bullshit. I don't
know about anyone else, but the judges should be
slapped in the face for this........sheesh!

Sorry.....I know I haven't gone off like at all here on
the thread, but I'm still pissed off at the skating event
tonight, esp. at those judges who favored the Russians...
AGAIN.

Ahhhhhh such controversy!

til tomorrow!
