A list of guidelines for those of us who identify as gay, which have served me well thus far. Feel free to add your own to the first 5.
I. Thou Shalt Be a Proud Individual
Gay pride comes from the knowledge your sexuality is a gift, not a curse. As a general rule, homosexuals have more fulfilling relationships than heterosexuals: Partners know each other better, are closer friends, have similar sex needs, and can borrow each other's clothes. Though you share your sexuality with about 10% of the population, avoid the tribal mentality and focus on your individuality.
II. Thou Shalt Be Confident and Secure
There is nothing sexier than a confident man. Learn to straddle the line between cockiness and self-assuredness. If you're not comfortable in your own skin, do whatever it takes to develop self esteem. Be very wary of jealous types...Possessive lovers use jealousy to mask their own insecurities.
III. Thou Shalt Ignore Pre-Defined Sexual Roles
Like flavors of ice cream, you can have a favorite. Though you can enjoy or prefer one role over another, you should avoid any and all pressure or impulse to pigeon hole your sexual activities into a specific top or bottom only position. Doing so limits your pleasure possibilities by half. You're male; born and equipped to enjoy both roles in intercourse. There's no need to adopt heterosexual mores in bed.
IV. Thou Shalt Not "Seek Long Term" Relationships
Erase all presumptions and goals upon dating - and let feelings develop naturally over time. Going into any new endeavor with with preconceptions is feigned emotion based on needs -- not wants. Strong relationships take a lot more than a few weeks or months to develop. When they're willed or forced into existence, you're starting off on a sand foundation.
V. Thou Shalt Focus on Mental & Physical Health
Unless you're in a monogamous relationship with another STD-free partner, wrap that rascal. You only get on ticket to this ride called life. Make it last by exercising and eating healthy foods. Instead of bitching and whining about gay men's infatuation with sex and body image, consider the fact your lack of respect for your own body and health is even shallower.
