Does this laptop have a physical switch/button/detent that tells the machine/OS you've shut the lid that you might have touched/pushed/(God forbid)jammed?FurryFury said:Yes, I was writing a post.

Not necessarily on the fan, it's there to keep the internal temperature below a certain level. Got a make and model for this device?FurryFury said:No, if that were the case the fan would have shut off but as it is or was, the screen went blank the machine kept humming.
There is a button that it's not responding to. I had to pull out the battery and all power to get it to quit. It may be overheated, I guess. *shrugs*

Set it to the side to let it cool is a good first choice. After that, reseating the HDD, reseating any optical device, and checking the memory for proper seating follow.
Good idea (for a different reason), but Fury might want to decide to let hubby check it out. A good check for laptop screen issues is taking the cable from the monitor of the current machine she's posting from and attaching it to the external port of the laptop. That's a good process of elimination test. i'd kinda like to see what happens when the laptop cools.leeroy jenkins said:If your having screen issues, cant you use one of the parallel or serial cable ports to run a cable from the laptop to the other monitor?? That way you can at least clean up the computer and do not have an embarrassment from getting it fixed?? I run my tower to my TV is why I ask.

Now for the difficult question, without any trace of a smirk. Do you normally place the laptop on a soft surface like a bed, couch, your legs while posting? i haven't looked at the specs on your machine yet, but sometimes a soft surface will block intake or exhaust vents and obstruct air flow inside the machine.
ohhhhFurryFury said:When I'm in bed I keep it on a ornate wooden tray.
FurryFury said:Percussive, like hitting it? *L*
Smart woman, but i'd use a similar tray while in the living room. Some think they're getting hot and bothered by the discourse when in actuality, the "connection device" has a lot more to do with it.FurryFury said:When I'm in bed I keep it on a ornate wooden tray.
When I'm in a chair in the living room, yes, on my legs.
Otherwise at a table.
No biggie. Corporations frequently hide references to older models as a cheap means of inducing you to buy a new one. IBM is infamous for doing so.FurryFury said:Mine doesn't even look like it's on there. It's like a 1360 series model.
I'm baffled. Which doesn't surprise me.

Found a few things and reading ... http://support.acer-euro.com/drivers/notebook/as_1360.html
If you don't have the product manual anymore, here's a link to give hubby a headstart ... ftp://ftp.support.acer-euro.com/notebook/aspire_1360/manual/as1360-uk.pdf

Damn thing kept shutting down and so guess who found it handy to have a slave to send out in the snow, with laptop, to finish what he had to get done...worked wonderfully in the snow, but didn't help my flu!!The cats found it very strange behaviour and after peering at me through the window while I was out there, nearly stretching their heads off their necks, treated us with suspicion the rest of the evening.
