What is up with IS guys. Does it make them feel good to know that they have more computer knowledge than us average mortals. Does it make them feel better to put people down and make us feel about two when we use the wrond computer term?
There is this skit on Saturday Night Live about a tech guy who is arrogant and sarcastic and he puts his co-workers down when they ask him a question about their computers. What makes that skit so funny is that it's true. It's sooooo true. The IS department at my job has four guys who all act exactly like that. I can't call and ask for help about a problem without being corrected or ridiculed. What the hell is their problems. At another job I had, the IS guy was the same.
I am sure there are nice IS guys out there, I just haven't encountered any yet. Does anyone else have IS stories from hell?

Thanks for letting me vent.

ummm what is ...IS??

OMG....I just noticed..you changed your signature...can I have your old one....since your not using it anyway...or at least let me borrow it...I LOVE it. it is the best one I've seen. I will even put a little *EVE* TM on it.please please please.

Sure you can use my old signature if you like, it had a lot of meaning to me, although I am not the originator of that quote. I was taking a class in high school and my teacher would always read an inspirational thought of the day, and that was one of them and it's stuck with me througout the years. I'm glad you liked it.

BTW, IS is Information Systems, so it's bascially the tech guy that you call at your job when you have a computer problem.

Ohhhh you mean Earl.....but we don't call him such nice things as "tech guy".

Thank you .

Spending enough time with computers to gain the skills to be a "good" IS guy isn't conducive to developing good people skills. The kind of mindset that is good with computers often gets that way to escape problems dealing with people.

Just a possible reason, not an excuse. I'm sure that not every IS guy is that way, just enough of them to perpetuate the stereotype.

There is no good reason for being a supercilious ass, no matter what the job. People skills can be learned.

Our IS guy is absolutely wonderful! I never notice if he knows much about computers....Tony is 6", 180-200lb of muscle, looks decidely Italian and is so shy that he can't come work on one of our computers without blushing the whole time.

Think it might have something to do with NONE of us getting out of our chair, when he kneels down on the floor to check out the computer.

Surprised the poor bastard hasn't filed charges. HeHe!

If you read Dilbert, all's you need to know is TECHNOLOGY DIVA.

And if you take a look at some of these guys, it all boils down to insecurity, and a deep need to get laid.

I work in a place with very nice techie folks. Both male and female. I actually feel kinds sorry for them. I, personally, wear 2 beepers in my job--they usually have at least 3 (for each "job" they are covering). Ours respond quickly and love us.

Of course, knowing that we E.R. folks are the ones who choose to apply the tape directly to skin or gauze placed over the skin and that we choose to gently remove clothes with modesty well protected or to cut everything off in a race to see who gets their side off the patient first makes us much more likely to be treated well.

(It is interresting with the cops too--we are nice to them and they are nice to us. Even when it is very very obvious that there is no personal desire to be. I just love getting pulled over by some cop who's hand was recently treated for a boxer's fracture....Thankfully, it is rare.
It is probably the same relationship as with those techies--they take care of us in preparation for us taking good care of them. They also are acutely aware that getting our patients up and off the backboards is directly related to the "up-ness" of our computer systems!)

I bet that if I worked at stop-n-go that I'd be treated like dirt though.

I AM A tech guy. You people just don't appreciate it do you? I spend 10-13 hours per day trying to do everything possible to keep things running smooth. Then, when I am trying to take 5 minutes to get a up of coffee, someone calls saying they can't get their screen saver to install, or they cannot send an email to their son. You know what? TOUGH! That is NOT what we are here for! We do not get upset because you don't get every computer term right. I would not know how to do your job, so I don't expect you to know how to do mine. We get no respect, and let me tell you something... if it wasn't for us, no work would get done at all.

Don't hold back BigJMan1281, tell us how you really feel.

I'm am an IS guy too. The job can get to be frustrating at times, and sometimes we take the frustrations out on the person we're trying to help. Computers, especially networked personal computers, can be very frustrating for someone who's just trying to get some work done; we don't all have HAL 2000's yet. (Open the pod bay door, HAL.)

And yes ContessaR, I do need to get laid.

Eve Im with you, I am no computer freak Im self taught, my nephew is a computer expert, my daughter is in to "I.T." in a big way. They expect me to understand all the jargon, instead of explaining in just ordinary words, what they mean. I think the problem is that they did not have computers when I was at school, and they assume that we all know.

Any way I can see you need rescuing, so hold on while I saddle my trusty stead, and get my crew togeather.

Good for you. But if you don't like being paged so much, maybe you should consider another career.
I'm not saying that I don't appreciate all that IS does, I certainly do, but I don't need to be belittled for asking a simple computer question. I am sure you're an upstanding citizen BigJ treat each person with the utmost respect right? Anyway, I give people to those who give me respect back and not because he/she knows more about computers than I do.

Ericred50 so when and you and your horse swinging by?

It is not that I gather stress throughout the day and then snap on the poor person that just wants some help. I snap on ungrateful people who seem to believe that when everything goes wrong it is my fault. I do not mind being asked questions, I do not belittle someone because they ask a question, and I respect people that deserve it.

*Eve* in all fairness all the things you said could've been applied to any professional/nonprofessional situation. I've had a similar situation with my doctor and some adult online chat personalities. It sounds like you just had a bad experience with an asshole-who happens to be an IT person.
